As known to all,Othello is one of the four great tragedies of Shakespeare.Since the play was titled Othello,readers may get a first impression that Shakespeare spent most words characterizing Othello;however,Iago was portrayed much more specifically and vividly as a protagonist,for he spoke more lines than Othello and had plenty of soliloquy to tell the reader what was on his mind.Being offensive and malcontent for Othello's promotion of Cassio,Iago successfully tricked Othello to demote him later.His second scheme,which occupied the last three Acts of the play,convinced Othello that his wife was having an affair with Cassio.Therefore it is Iago who directed the tragedy,manipulated all others'behaviors at will and trapped them into an intricate net of lies.

1 Iago's Motives to Direct the Tragedy

In the final scene,Iago's intrigue would have succeeded except for his wife Emilia's exposure of his lies.When asked for an explanation for his malicious behaviors,Iago just said,'Demand me nothing.What you know,you know.From this time forth I never will speek word."[1]102These are his final lines before the execution,however,just because Iago did not say anything to purge himself from guilty;it aroused readers'greater interest to explore his real motive to direct this tragedy.

1.1 Failure to be promoted–direct reason

In Act 1,scene 1,Iago himself stated that his prime motivation was bitterness at the failure of promotion,and he would not have been so furious if Othello had promoted someone else with distinctive military talent and glorious exploit instead of Cassio.He used to be very confident about his ability to the promotion,and he used to believe he should be the only person that Othello trusted.Therefore,the loss of promotion as well as meant the loss of Othello's trust.It was also the reason why Iago's hatred never deceased bu swelled after he successfully made Othello demote Cassio.And o course,there would be many other factors that triggered Iago's endless revenge.

1.2 Racism

Although Othello was Iago's superior,Iago despisesd him in deep heart,because Othello was a black,a moor.In Act I,Scene 1Iago used this to offend Desdemona's father by stating'an old black ram is tupping your white ewe"[1]7.And Iago also reminded Othello of his race,knowing that even Othello himself would sometimes consider it as a kind of defect,then it would be easier to convince Othello that his wife might not love him one day.In this way,without any concrete evidences,Iago successfully managed to shake Othello's trust to his wife.He had made good preparation for his following revenge scheme.

1.3 Jealousy and egoism

As mentioned previously,it was not the position as lieutenan that Iago really wanted to have.Otherwise the tragedy would come to an end when Cassio was demoted.Essentially,Iago was totally blinded by a strong sense of jealousy,suspicion and insecurity so that he could only see the ugly nature of human beings.At the end of Act I,scene 3,it was very ridiculous that Iago even doubted Othello might have slept with his wife Emilia:'It is thought abroad that'twixt my sheets/He has done my office.I know not if't be true But I for mere suspicion in that kind Will do as if for surety."[1]22

Besides,all the elements such as discontentment,discrimination and jealousy revealed in the soliloquy can be concluded as egoism,which is the most precise elaboration of Iago's ultimate motivation and explaination for his ingratitude and viciousness on the people around him.The idea is fully supported through the speech.For example,in Act I,Scene 1,Iago's dialogue with Roderigo has fully shown his egoistic character:

O,sir,content you.I follow him to serve my turn upon him:We cannot all be masters,nor all masters Cannot be truly follow'd...Others there are Who,trimm'd in forms and visages of duty,Keep ye their hearts attending on themselves.And throwing but shows of service on their lords Do well thrive by them;and when they have lined their coats Do themselves homage.These fellows have some soul,And such a one do I profess myself...In following him,I follow but myself;Heaven is my judge,not I for love and duty,But seeming so,for my peculiar end.For when my outward action doth demonstrate The native act and figure of my heart In complement extern,'tis not long after But I will wear my heart upon my sleeve For daws to peck at:I am not what I am.[1]

To Iago,a normal and wise man should do everything for the good of himself and the friendship and love were totally vague and intangible.The value of Othello and other people's existence was that he could make use of them.[2]56

2 Iago's Talent in Directing the Tragedy

Despite readers'hatred to Iago,his talent for penetrating and manipulating people is undeniable.Maybe Iago was not as talented as Othello in military affairs,not as capable as Cassio in working performance,and not as rich as Roderigo Nevertheless,he was flexible,sophisticated and the only intelligent person in the play.He lied to everybody but at the same time he behaved as a best friend of them because he built a good mutual trustful relationship with everyone.And he fully made use of this interpersonal relationship to convince others that he was the only faithful friend that could help them then invaded their mentality shamelessly.Therefore Iago was very taltented in directing the tragedy,for he was such a machinator,words master,actionist as well as a psychologist.[3]85

3 Conclusion

Iago's self-destruction began with his self-conceit.[4]66Actual-ly,in the beginning,he never expected that the scheme wouldthreaten his life.He knew that jealousy was torturous,so he intend-ed to impose what he had suffered on others.But unconsciously,hefunctioned as a director to arrange other people's destiny because ofhis extreme egoism.In depiction of Iago,Shakespeare has demon-strated his astonishing perceptiveness to human inner world:the ea-gerness to power,the impulse to revenge and the thrill to implementof plot as well as his profound insight of the social and spirit crisisof humanism.References:

莎士比亚(William Shakespeare,1564-1616)的154首十四行诗(Sonnet)代表英语十四行诗的最高峰,一向为时人推崇。到目前为止,汉语全译本已达11本,选译本则更多。著名的译者有朱生豪(1912-1944)、朱湘(1904-1933)、屠岸(1923-)、梁宗岱(1903-1983)、杨熙龄和梁实秋(1903-1987)等。其中,最广为传诵的当属第18首,其美妙的比喻,精致的措辞和热烈的情怀,不知令多少学者和诗人叹服,赏析文字者莫不称颂其妙。然而,一般读者对该诗的看法如何呢?笔者给英语专业本科生和研究生以及非英语专业本科生教授英诗几年,从教学实践看,学生对莎氏十四行诗第18首表示欣赏的寥寥无几。经典诗歌不受大众欢迎是常见现象,人们往往归咎于时代和社会,或者归咎于读者,却很少对作品本身进行再审视,因为它们是“经典”。然而,笔者认为,有时经典作品本身的缺陷也是其不受大众欢迎的原因之一,以莎氏十四行诗第18首为例,以往从未有人指出过它的缺点,但笔者根据教学实践得来的体会,认为它至少有两大缺点,一是在音韵方面,其韵脚、头韵和韵格均不同程度的破坏了诗歌的音美和形美;二是某些比喻和描述的平淡或离奇破坏了诗歌的意美。

一、音韵参差,破坏了音美和形美

全诗的基本格律是五音步抑扬格(iambic pentameter),包括三个四行组(quatrain)和一个对偶句(couplet),采用典型的莎氏十四行的韵式,即abab cdcd efef gg。但本诗音韵并不十分齐整。

在韵脚(end rhyme)方面,第二行的temperate与第四行的date押韵,但两个词的重音位置却不同,这一韵就既非阳韵(masculine rhyme)也非阴韵(feminine rhyme),显得不伦不类,与其它严整的韵对比,这一韵念起来令人颇感突兀,破坏了诗歌的音韵美。

头韵(alliteration)方面,第六和第七行都以And 起头,形成头韵,但这两个并列的简单陈述句从意义上看,造成了语意在同一水平上徘徊而不是递进,而且用相同的And起头使两句不仅在语意也在形式上显得拖沓而无变化,破坏了诗歌的音韵美和形式美。

韵格(meter)方面,五音步抑扬格的诗歌是常有破格的,特别是在诗歌首行的第一个音步,经常是前重音后轻音。适当的破格可使诗歌免于呆板,增加变化,使音韵更显其美。但过多的破格就会打乱诗歌的格式,使其音律显得零碎,给诗歌带来负面影响,本诗即是如此。第一行“Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”中的“thee to”是无法按轻重音的顺序来念的,第二行“Thou art more lovely and more temperate”中的两个more是强调,要念重音,因此这一行的韵格就不是抑扬格了。第六行“And often is his gold complexion dimm’d”中前两个音步的轻重音位置是模糊的。第十行“Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest”中的第一个音步可以看作是破格,第十一行“Nor shall Death brag thou wander’st in his shade”中的“Nor shall Death brag”重音和轻音顺序应是“重轻重重”,也不是抑扬格。可见,本诗因为破格过多,格律形式有点混乱,诗歌齐整的音韵美受到了损害。实际上,学生也经常反映这首诗歌读起来有些地方很拗口,主要就是因为韵律破格太多所致。

二、比喻和描述有时平淡或离奇,破坏意美

诗歌之美,不仅体现在音美和形美上,而且还有语意层面的美。通过语法、词汇或使用比喻等,可以建构诗歌的意美。本诗中有美丽的语言,如“darling buds of May”(五月的嫩蕊)、“eternal summer”(长夏)、“thou wander’st in his shade”(在他的暗影里蹉跎),但也有平常的比喻和描述,如诗中将“你”比喻为“夏季”,把太阳比成“天上的眼睛”,有“金色的面容”,这当然不是平淡的描述,但至少也不是新鲜的。而说死神能“夸口”,这种拟人的手法多少有些平淡了。诗中又说夏天有“租期”,租期又“太短”,则令人感到有些陌生,难有美感了。时光匆匆是人人皆知的常识,诗中用复杂的表述来说明浅显的道理,很难令人感到亲切,这样的比喻并未达到增强表现力的效果。这种将简单复杂化从而使人产生隔膜的例子还有“nature’s changing course untrimm’d ”以及“that fair thou owest”。而“And every fair from fair”则让一般读者感到很抽象,难以理解。“So long as men can breathe or eyes can see”也是一句很平常的散文句。

以上所述,是莎氏十四行诗第18首在诗艺上的缺陷。当然诗中古雅的用词和句法也会给普通读者带来阅读上的不适,但这是古今语言演变造成的隔膜,并非诗歌本身的原因,正如其多个汉译文,现在看起来也有时代距离感一样。莎士比亚十四行诗第18首是一首经典诗歌,其美妙自不待言,但是从另一个角度检视和观察,认识其缺点和不足,以避免盲目吹捧和过度美化,应该是对待文学经典的更全面因而是更可取的方法。
