在课文内容的设置中,编者也着力解决这一问题。第一部分内容是pre-reading questions,主要是与课文相关的问题,引导学生进入主题。从这一角度出发,笔者认为,课前的warm-up环节,在课文的学习及学生对于文章的理解中起重要作用。本文中,笔者将讨论课前warm-up的主要内容及作用,为综英教学提供新的思路,希望可以抛砖引玉,带来更多宝贵建议。

课前warm-up的内容主要分几个方面:文化背景。相关社会问题。人物介绍。下面,笔者将分别阐述。

一、文化背景

课文内容如果是关于文化,历史,战争等,warm-up的内容就要以背景知识介绍为主。课前让学生独立或分组查找关于特定事件或文化的背景知识,课堂上分享自己所得。这类任务可以激发学生的兴趣,培养他们独立学习的习惯,同时,分享过程中大家取长补短,营造更活跃的课堂气氛。

例如,综合英语第四册unit 4 A View of Mountains.这篇课文是关于由原子弹在长崎造成的伤害所引起的对于核武器是否应该存在的反思。在讲这篇课文前,笔者布置了任务,将学生按宿舍分组,查找关于核武器的相关资料。在课前的warm-up中,各小组做了充分的准备,用英文向同学们介绍了核武器的诞生时间,核武器的杀伤力,原子弹在广岛,长崎所造成的伤亡,当今世界核武器的分布或关于核武器使用的条约等。关于原子弹及其影响的相关词汇,也在信息查找过程中得到了积累。虽然整个warm-up过程占了约20分钟,耗时较长,但磨刀不误砍柴工。学生在交流成果后,对于核武器及其灾难性影响有了一定了解,在学习课文时,不会再有有事不关己而不愿学习的态度,提高了学习的效率。

对文化背景的了解一方面丰富了学生的知识,促进他们课外学习,另一方面,让学生感觉学有所用,能够学以致用,对于激发学生的学习热情是很有帮助的。

二、相关社会问题

综合英语教材的另一大特点,也是笔者认为非常与时俱进的一点,就是课文内容的选择与当代社会的问题紧密结合。这类课文的学习,如果结合适当的warm-up,学生不仅可以学到知识,还可以锻炼思辨能力。因此,这类课文,笔者一般选择让学生以讨论的形式来进行课前warm-up。

例如,综合英语第三册unit 4,fun,oh boy.Fun.You Could Die From It。这篇课文的主要内容,是关于一代人对于快乐的看法。一般说来,涉及到快乐,幸福感等抽象概念时,学生会觉得文章比较空,很难理解。那么怎么样适当运用warm-up,才能使课文的内容可以在学生中引起共鸣?笔者采用了与当前社会问题相结合的方式,进行启发式教学。在课前warm-up中,笔者提出了这样一个问题:为什么很多人喜欢看娱乐节目?18,9岁的大学生对这类节目如数家珍。在热烈的讨论中,我们总结:1.人们看娱乐节目是为了快乐。2.娱乐节目虽然给我们带来的欢乐,但是剥夺了交流的时间。3.真正的快乐不是来源于别人让我们开怀大笑,而是来源于我们内心的对自己的认同感或成就感。得出这样的结论后,再去学习课文,会发现课文中看起来很虚的东西,在本质上和他们的观点是一致的。这种认同感,使学生更加认真的学习,课文成了用更好的语言表达他们观点的媒介。

这类课文在综合英语教材种比较常见,例如课文Is anOnly Child a Lonely Child? 这篇课文可以同中国的独生子女政策联系,讨论其利弊。课文Chinese Food,可以从其反面,也就是西方餐馆在中国的蔓延来讨论。这类讨论为学生头脑风暴提供了机会,既对课文有所延伸,又为以后的写作积累素材。

三、人物介绍

综英课文的选择,不乏名家名作。此类课文的课前warm-up中,可以让学生搜集并介绍作者,利用榜样的力量引导学生。

例如,综英第四册unit 1Never Give in,Never,Never,Never就是丘吉尔发表的一篇演讲稿。演讲稿一般比较通俗易懂,长句难句及陌生词汇,课文本身难度较小,因此课外延伸是这单元的重点。在课前的warm-up中,由学生展示了关于丘吉尔的生平,成就,还有学生搜索到了丘吉尔的《哈罗公学》以及其他演讲稿。Warm-up环节后,学生们对于丘吉尔有了更深的了解和认识。这极大的丰富的学生的课外知识,也因为解更多,而更想学习更多。

值得注意的是,课文选择的现代作家较多,学生查找资料时可能会遇到困难,但接触现代文学,比古典文学更贴近生活,也更易理解。

传统的综合英语教学往往是以教师教为主体，学生在课堂上只是被动的接受知识的灌输，而由于综合英语是一门综合性很强的课程，教师在教学中常会出现胡子眉毛一把抓的情况，在教学环节中想涵盖听说读写译的各个方面，从而导致出现全而不精的尴尬局面。

1、教学手段传统化，授课过程机械化。在传统的课堂教学中，教师主要通过语言基础训练与篇章讲解分析，使学生达到提高其综合英语能力的目的。因此，字词讲解、课文分析、核对练习成为综合英语课堂三部曲，记单词、读课文、做练习是学生学习此课程的三步骤。这种传统的教学方法对培养和提高学生的各项英语技能有一定的帮助，但也容易让学生学习语言的过程成为单纯的记忆过程。长久以往，教师和学生都会对这种传统的教学模式感到厌烦和乏味。

2、以教师为主体的传统综英课堂难以全面培养学生的语言交际技能。在传统综合英语课堂教学中，主要是以教师讲，学生记为主。教师是课堂上主角，学生只是被动的接受知识，很少主动的参与到课堂教学的。如此循环，学生的听说技能被忽视，读写技能也没有得到很好的发展，学生的思维能力和创新能力似乎与综合英语课程教学无关。

新型综合英语教学模式的探索

根据独立院校学生的英语基础和实际情况，我院英语系综合英语主讲及骨干教师积极探索适合本课程的教学法。根据不同的教学对象、教学内容、教学目的和要求，采用不同的教学方法。采取讨论式挖掘文章内容，使学生对课文的理解更加深刻；对涉及当前经济社会生活中有争议的问题采用辩论式，提高学生的英语思维与论辩能力；对课本中的剧本性的课文采用角色扮演式，提高学生的设计能力与表演才能；对比较容易的课文，要求学生课下准备，课上学生自己登台讲解，锻炼学生的演讲能力；对涉及到中外文化的课文，采用比较和对比的方式，组织学生找出中外文化中的异同点。

1、在课前相关话题讨论部分注重学生反应能力的培养。在课前的相关话题讨论部分，教师在课前准备一些与课文主题相关的，学生感兴趣的话题让学生在课堂上充分表达自己的观点，并要求每位学生给出的答案不能雷同，要有自己独特的见解。

2、通过对话及改变剧本并表演培养学生交际和表演能力。在《现代大学英语》(1-4册)中，有很多课文是以剧本和故事体裁为主，由于课文的语言比较简单，学生容易理解，笔者采取让学生编造对话及改编剧本并表演的形式让学生充分理解课文。

3、通过课堂辩论和小组讨论激发学生的思辨能力。课堂分组讨论是最常见的启发思维和交流思想的方式。通常，在讲解分析课文之前或之后，教师提出一两个与课文有关且学生感兴趣的话题，在课堂上分组讨论5-10分钟，然后，每组一个代表汇报本组成员有趣的、不同的角度及观点在学习“Angelson a Pin”一课时，教师可采取课堂讨论及辩论的方式让学生对东西方教育方式的不同点和相同点进行讨论，然后把学生分为支持东方教育方式和支持西方教育方式的两组进行辩论，学生会在短时间内把自己对于该论题的观点用语言输出的形式比表达出来，这对于培养学生的思辨能力是大有裨益的。

4、通过让学生用所学重点词组作文对学生进行语言写作训练。如在讲到“Message of the Land”一课时，笔者让学生用afford，now and then，mind，bleed，barter,replace，litter,fashion，spring(v.)，occur,pass sth. on to sb.，tie sb. down及相关短语编写/讲述一个小故事，并写成一篇作文交给教师批阅，这种类型的联系不光让学生联系了该课中重点单词和词组的用法，而且培养了学生的想像能力和逻辑思维能力。

5、通过文章语言风格和写作手法的解读培养学生的阅读能力。综合英语教材中选取的课文都是一些优秀的精品文章，教师在进行课文的讲解时没必要逐字逐句的解释，我们对课文的解读不能仅仅停留在词汇和语法的层面上，重要的是要有意识的引导学生关注文章的体裁和作品的语言风格，并介绍相关的文化背景知识。

6、通过大量的课外阅读和学习扩展学生的知识面。语言的学习光依靠课堂上的教学时间是远远不够的，我们需要学生通过大量的课外阅读来扩展他们的知识面。基于独立学院学生基础薄弱的实际情况，笔者在第一学区新生开学的第一节课上，都会给学生提供一个课外阅读参考书目，我们要求学生从阅读一些名著的简易版开始，慢慢深入到原版名著的阅读，并在学期末通过让学生些读书笔记或是在课堂上做Pre-sentation的形式检查学生本学期课外阅读的情况。
