商务英语信函是涉外商业活动中开展业务的专业性书面记录,商务英语信函有其自身的语体特征及不同的翻译原则和要求,翻译时要特别注重准确性和规范性。在商务英语信函翻译中,要做到忠实、通顺,译者应遵循准确规范、功能对等的原则,本文从商务英语信函的语体特征以及商务英语信函的翻译策略和技巧进行了如下的语体分析。

1. 商务英语信函的语体特征分析

1.1词汇特点

商务英语信函中的正式词汇、多于非正式口语词汇和基本词汇,充分体现了规范正式的特点。经常以意义相同或相近的书面词语、中性词汇代替非正式口语词汇和基本词汇,以介词短语代替简单的介词和连词,如果商务英语信函涉及货物的价格、重量等,有关数字必须准确严谨,毫不含糊。时间概念在国际商务英语信函中必须准确具体:七、八月份各有31天,因此七、八月的“下旬”都要用the last 11 days来表达;再如,介词短语by Monday和before Monday在国际商务英语信函中是要严格区分的,前者包括Monday,而后者则不包括Monday这一天,即截止日为Monday前的一天。由此可见其严谨准确性。

商务英语信函用词专业性强主要体现在使用了大量的专业术语、外来词、缩略语等,商务英语信函的涉外性决定了其专业术语或缩略语必须约定俗成、国际通用,不能任意更改替换,且这些专业术语意思明确、内涵特定,在商务活动中频繁出现,因此,译者在翻译的过程中不能望文生义,要根据商务英语词汇的特定内涵,再结合语境来翻译。国际商务英语信函的主要功能是传递商务信息,因此除必须使用专业术语等手段来准确表达信息意图外,要求信函词语明白易懂,言简意赅,直达意图。除使用正式词汇的场合之外,此类信函很少使用各种修辞手法,文体风格较朴实平易。

1.2句式结构特点

在商务英语信函中惯用层次复杂的从句和长句,这既可以表达多层次的复杂逻辑关系,又能够完整充分地表达相互关联的意义。由于国际商务公函常常要表示某些条款相互成立、互为条件,或对某些一连串的具有因果关系的事件进行叙述,因而这种长而复杂的语体就非常适合这种情况。商务英语信函是一种公函,是带有公对公性质的正式信函,因此常用习语、套语来显示信函的礼貌和正式。这些词语在商贸活动中经过长期的使用逐渐地固定下来,形成了惯例,广泛用于商务信函中。

2. 商务英语信函的翻译策略和技巧分析

2.1词义选择

在翻译商务英语信函时,译者尤其要把握好词义的选择。因为这不同于文学翻译,不应过多地追求辞藻华丽,而应以准确为目标。在翻译过程中应注意以下各个方面:商务英语信函常用一些日常语言的词汇来表达一定的专业内容,遇到此类词语时,切忌望文生义。例如,英文中“dry goods”的意思是“纺织品”,不能翻译成“干货”。“black tea”在英语中的固定译法是“红茶”,不能妄加揣测翻译成“黑茶”、“普洱茶”,再如,“teashop”在英语中和“tearoom”、“teahouse”相类似,是“茶馆”、“茶室”的意思。同时,“teahouse”在英国还有咖啡馆的意思,也指进出口公司的茶叶部。理解词义要先看该词语所属的句法范畴,再结合具体的语境准确选择词义。

2.2词类转译法

商务英语信函中常有大量介词出现,而且与其他词类搭配灵活。由于搭配不同,其意义也不同,而且可以表达出汉语中常用动词表达的意义。因此,在翻译过程中,介词常可以转化为动词。例如:We should advise you to get in touch with them for yourrequirements. 譯为:建议你方与他们取得联系,洽购所需商品。在翻译该句子时,为了完整地表达它在句子中的含义,可以依据介词“for”的上下文,对其内涵进行引申,将其转化成动词“洽购”。

2.3增、减词法

由于英语和汉语两种语言在语法、修辞方面的差异,英语中省略的成分在翻译成汉语时通常需要加以补充,否则译文便不通顺,甚至产生歧义。英语名词有数的变化形式。复数形式的名词前加上不同的修饰语,可以指不同种类的东西或内容,但翻译成汉语时却需要重复名词,以避免歧义。例如:Installation guide and maintenance operation manualsand lists of the spare parts will be dispatched to you with the goods.译为:所购机械的安装指南、维修手册、操作手册及零部件清单将随货发给贵方。上例中的“manuals”是复数形式,前边有两个修饰成分,“maintenance”意为维修或保养,“operation”意为操作。如按原文直译成维修操作,难免产生歧义,增添了“ 手册”这一词之后,该译文的意思就更加清楚明了。

2.4拆译法

在翻译商务英语信函时,由于英汉句法差异较大,往往原文中用一句话所能表达的内容,在翻译成汉语后,如果用一句话来表达,原文的信息就不能完整地表达出来,有时即使能传达出来,意思也不能表达清楚。这种情况下采用拆译法十分必要。例如:We give 10% discount for cash payment.译为:如果用现金付款,我方予以九折优惠。在翻译上述例句时,将“for cash payment”译成汉语偏正句后,构成汉语假设关系的复句,这样不仅语意连贯,而且逻辑关系明确,与直译对比,效果显著。

一、简述译界的翻译标准和方法

在翻译界, 有关翻译标准和方法的讨论很多。首先, 关于翻译标准的讨论。在中国, 比较著名的有严复的“信、达、雅”, 鲁迅和茅盾的“忠实和通顺”相结合, 以及傅雷和钱钟书的“神似”和“化境”等;在西方, 著名的有亚历山大·F·泰特勒 (Alexander Fraser Tytler) 的“三原则”, 尤金·奈达 (Eugene A Nida) 的“对等论”以及汉斯·威谬尔 (Hans Vermeer) 的“目的论” (Skopos) 等。“目的论”指出:翻译方法的选择会受翻译材料的特点和目的的影响。

其次, 有关翻译方法的讨论。翻译界关于翻译方法的讨论很多, 其中争议最多的是“直译”和“意译”。直译的优点在于能传达原文意义, 体现原文风格, 但局限在于译文有时冗长罗唆, 晦涩难懂, 一味直译还会导致死译、误译;意译的优点在于能有效的传达原文的意思, 更利于译文读者的理解, 但意译也要把握好度, 切忌胡译。因此, 直译和意译的采用要根据具体的翻译材料而定, 有时需将两者有效结合。对直译和意译的延伸讨论就是“洋化”和“归化”。首先将这两个词语作为术语使用的是美国翻译家Lawrence Venuti。Venuti阐述了“洋化”和“归化”的特点:洋化旨在保留源语的文化特点和地方特色, 并把这些特点传达给译入语读者;而归化主要着眼于将源出语的主要信息传达给译入语读者, 有时为了便于译入语读者理解而放弃源出语的某些文化特征而代之以目的语的文化特征, 以打破译语读者对源出语的生疏感。以上这些翻译方法的采用因翻译的具体目的和材料的不同而有所不同。英汉商贸信函翻译方法的采用要受商贸信函这种特定文体的目的和特点的影响。

二、商贸信函的目的、格式和特点

商贸信函的目的在于让收信者根据信的要求采取行动以达到写信人的目的。写信人通过所写的内容和方式让收信人了解其意思和目的 (Cao Ling, 1) 。因此, 准确传达商贸信函所含的信息是信函翻译的首要任务。

就格式而言, 英文商贸信函与中文商贸信函有一些不同之处, 有些格式甚至是英文商贸信函所特有的。一般说来, 一个正规的英文商贸信函必须包含的部分有:信头、日期、信内地址、称呼、正文、结束语和签名。其中, 信头和信内地址部分是英文商贸信函所特有的, 其地址的顺序与中文的刚好相反。日期的位置与写法有中文的也不同, 英文日期位于信的右上角而中文的则位于右下角。英文日期一般是“月、日、年”或“日、月、年”而中文则是“年、月、日”。这些不同在翻译时都要相应的采用合适的方法。

商贸信函属于比较拘谨正式的文体, 与其它信函相比有其特定的特点。一般应遵守商业英语写作的七“C”原则:正确 (correctness) , 简练 (conciseness) , 清楚 (clearness) , 完整 (completeness) , 具体 (concreteness) , 礼貌 (courtesy) 和体谅 (consideration) (王治奎, 265) 。商贸信函要准确无误地表达意思, 尤其涉及到报价时, 更要注意数据的准确性。同时, 商贸信函又要简洁明了, 切忌重复罗嗦。对收信人也就是做生意的对象也要礼貌体谅, 让对方心悦诚服地接受你的要求。英文商贸信函的用语要求正规、礼貌, 表达不满是也要注意策略。英文商贸信函还涉及到专业术语和缩写, 因此翻译时不可望文生义, 要查阅相关词典。例如:L/C是Letter of Credit (信用证) , C/I是Certificate of Insurance (保险单凭证) 等。

三、英汉商贸信函翻译方法的论述

四、结语

综上所述, 英汉商贸信函翻译是在“目的论”的指导下, 遵循“忠实和通顺”相结合的原则, 整篇英文商贸信函翻译采用“直译、意译”相结合和“洋化、归化”相结合的方法, 以充分体现英文商贸信函的特点和目的, 并达到更佳的翻译效果。
