With the publication of The Scarlet Letter in 1850,Nathaniel Hawthorne became famous as the greatest writer living in the United States and his reputation as a major American author has been on the increase ever since. He is also one of the most talented American novelists and short story writers of the Romantic Age.He was the first American romance writer who initiated a new tradition in American literature which is called symbolic romance.Because of the society and the times he was born in,the family background and his life experience,Hawthorne was deeply affected by the Puritanism, which was reflected in his novels. This thesis is going to explore the use of symbolism in one of his best short stories“Young Goodman Brown”and how he uses those symbols to illustrate the puritanical doctrine,“Evil is the nature of mankind”(张勤,唐艳芳42).The short story“Young Goodman Brown”delves into the classic battle between good and evil, taking the main character,Goodman Brown,on a journey to test the resolve of his faith.Goodman ventures out on his journey deep into the forest to refuse the temptations of the devil, and this is a test he believes his faith is prepared to confront. The dangerous line in the struggle between good and evil is timeless and unchanging, and Goodman Brown is forever altered in a way he did not foresee being possible before taking his walk with the devil.

2 Literature Review

The study on Hawthorne’s work is popular among the research on American Literature. In the recent decades, the evaluation of Hawthorne’s literary achievements has a rising tendency.People re-evaluates his works by nowadays standards. With regard to his application of symbolism people pay most attention to the symbolic significance of The Scarlet Letter.Concerning about the relationship between Hawthorne and Puritanism, people concentrate on Hawthorne’s Puritan complex, the Puritan theme of his works and his uncertain attitude towards Puritanism. While people focus on his novel The Scarlet Letter, they neglect Hawthorne is also good at short stories. And the research on his works other than The Scarlet Letter is quite beyond comprehensive.

Some studies emphasize on his application of symbolism in The Scarlet Letter, for example, the changing symbolic meanings of the scarlet letter“A”(Adultery,Alone and Alienation,Able,Admirable and Angel);the symbolic meanings of the four major characters’names;the symbolic meanings of the objects that are described in the novel. An article concerning this topic is“The Characteristics of Symbolism Used in The Scarlet Letter”.

Some people pay attention to the paradoxical personality of Hawthorne who was influenced by three systems of thoughts:Puritanism,Transcendentalism and Mysticism. There is a strong sense of Puritan ideology throughout Hawthorne’s works. However,on the one hand, being influenced by the Puritan ideas like“internal corruption”and“atonement”,Hawthorne explores the ethical and criminal issues, and stands for good deeds and self-repent to purify the soul, and thus be saved. On the other hand, the Puritan’s exclusion and carnage towards dissidents as well as the Puritan doctrine’s suppression and destruction of human nature make Hawthorne very confused.A work of this kind is“The Reflection of Religious Thoughts in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet letter”.

Some other researches are about the themes of his works:alienation, initiation, problem of Guilt, pride,Puritan New England. For example,“On the Views of Love and Moral in The Scarlet Letter”.These themes in his works are well-discussed by researchers and win him high recognition.

This paper aims to explore the application of symbolism in“Young Goodman Brown”and Hawthorne’s puritanical traits reflected by the technique.Although The Scarlet Letter is considered as Hawthorne’s masterpiece and the symbolism in it is quite amazing,it is symbolism in this short story that attracts particular attention, since it is reflected in several aspects. In the story“Young Goodman Brown”,Nathaniel Hawthorne uses symbolism to describe a young man who reluctantly leaves his world of innocence. This young man soon realizes that evil is indeed very widespread and existent in his world. This paper begins with a brief look at the story and its use of symbolism, then emphasizes on the analysis of the symbolism reflected in four different aspects. In the following part, this paper provides readers with the impact puritanical ideas had on Hawthorne as well as the connection between the application of symbols and Hawthorne’s puritanical traits. In the end,the author of this thesis comes to a conclusion that the symbolism in“Young Goodman Brown”is reflected in four aspects:characters, objects, the setting and the plot. And the use of symbolism has much to do with Hawthorne’s puritanical traits.

3 Symbolism Used in“Young Goodman Brown”

Anyone familiar with Nathaniel Hawthorne is well aware of his characteristic use of symbolic imagery in his stories, which are generally about the contradictory good and evil sides of humanity. In this regard, the short story”Young Goodman Brown”does not disappoint us.The short story tells a story that through the covenant Goodman has made with the Devil,he has agreed to leave his wife,Faith, and walks through the forest with the Devil for one night as the Devil attempts to convert Goodman from Christianity.Goodman enters into this with great resolve that his survival and test of faith will not change, but the depth of his faith is fairly easily uprooted. As Goodman and the Devil are walking,Goodman comes upon his old catechism teacher,Goody Cloyse, who is heading to the Devil’s meeting that Goodman is being led to.Goodman is stunned at the sight of her,as he had considered her his moral and spiritual guide. This is the beginning of where Goodman’s faith shakes. As Goodman continues on,he sees many of the town’s people he respected and admired very much for their devout faith in God.Goodman’s faith begins to crumble because of this. His faith is never based on an internal relationship with God;instead, his faith is mirrored and reflected by the community he revered. As those around him show their real deeds,Goodman loses all faith, and becomes empty.

The application of symbolism is a major feature of this story.Besides adding many implied meanings of the names of the main characters, for example,”Goodman Brown”,“Faith”etc.,Hawthorne also gives many symbolic meaning to the objects, scenes and the whole story. All these are used to demonstrate a theme that kindness, devoutness, virtue are all the superficial reflections, which hide the dark, criminal and evil side of human nature. However, under certain circumstances, these ugly qualities will be revealed.

3.1 Symbolism in the characters

The names of the first two characters introduced in the story,Young Goodman Brown and his wife Faith, are both symbolic.“Young”infers that the title character is naive and new at life.“Goodman”suggests his thinking of self-righteousness that he is a good man.“Brown”indicates he is a commoner. Thus the full name implies he is an average naive and self-righteous Puritan(his religion is implied in the story).Since he is a commoner, then like many people,is vulnerable to suspicion and self-doubt.He does not possess any typically heroic traits characterized by firmness, but, instead, simply reacts to the situation, which results in his changeable mind.

From his name and the whole story, one can easily find that Goodman Brown is a“blind”man, not aware of the world around him.He begins to lose his faith when he finds out the whole town around him is a part of some sort of occult group practicing witchcraft and devil worship. He loses all faith in himself, mankind and the family when he finds that Faith is also in the malevolent group.Goodman Brown is a naive man that once believed the world around him was everything he knew it was and thought it was supposed to be.Now he knows the truth.

Faith,Brown’s wife, represents his religious devotion. She is not only Brown’s wife but she is significant for the name that she is given. Her gift to Brown isn’t a gift of love or passion. Her gift to him is an awakening to the world around him.Hawthorne,by writing,“Faith,as the wife was aptly named,”(张勤,唐艳芳26)suggests that Brown’s wife embodies the goodness that is found in a young wife.

Later in the story, when Brown meets his companion in the woods,he declares,“Faith kept me back awhile”(张勤,唐艳芳28).Here,Hawthorne uses the name of Brown’s wife as a symbol for Brown’s personal faith in goodness.

In the forest,Brown meets his companion, who“was about fifty years old, apparently in the same rank of life as Goodman Brown, and bearing a considerable resemblance to him...”(张勤,唐艳芳28).This man symbolizes the devil.Throughout the story, the devil is not only just who he is,but also the protagonist. He is the question of doubt in Brown’s mind.Without giving Brown the question of his own morality and beliefs Goodman Brown would not know what to do.

As being implied in the story, the devil bears certain resemblance to Brown.Goody Cloyse once said in the story that the devil is“in the very image of my old gossip,Goodman Brown, the grandfather of the silly fellow that now is”(张勤,唐艳芳32).Brown once saw his forefathers as symbols of honest and good Christian men, when Brown finds out that this journey has some evil purpose,he refuses to go any further and says:“My father never went into the woods on such an errand, nor his father before him.We have been a race of honest men and good Christians...”(张勤,唐艳芳29).But as the devil tells Brown that he has been well acquainted with his family, and he helped Brown’s grandfather when he did something evil.Brown’s forefathers become symbols of people that embody the evil that surrounds Brown.

The devil also tells Brown that he has a general acquaintance with the people of New England.Brown is stunned to learn that his minister and his Sunday school teacher—Deacon Gookin as well as Goody Cloyse who taught Brown catechism all support the interests of the devil.Goody Cloyse symbolizes a person who accepts evil because she tells the devil that she is ready for the meeting. She screams,“The devil!”(张勤,唐艳芳31)when touched by the devil’s staff, suggesting that she is under the devil’s control and possesses evil. Both the minister and Deacon Gookin are heading to the meeting with the devil.Brown learns that, like his fathers,Goody Cloyse, the minister, and Deacon Gookin also symbolize people who embody the evil present in his world.

3.2 Symbolism in the objects

In addition to the characters being symbols, the objects in this short story is also symbolic. It is worth mentioning that pink ribbon worn in Faith’s hair serves as an emblem of heavenly faith. It is a symbol of the purity of faith.Hawthorne concentrates on the color of the ribbons, pink, which also has a symbolic meaning. It is a color made out of red and white. In the Bible red represents sin while white signifies purity. Thus this symbol represents the blend of purity and sin. Here in the short story, white could represent Faith’s innocence, and red,her guilt, lust, evil in general.

Another important symbolic thing should be the devil’s walking staff which is described as having“the likeness of a great black snake”(张勤,唐艳芳28).The snake“might also be seen to twist and wriggle itself like a live serpent”(张勤,唐艳芳29).The snake-like appearance of the staff symbolizes the sly and treacherous character of Brown’s companion. The snake appearing to be alive symbolizes that the devil, with his staff,is already preying on Brown. The staff has many varieties. After the devil gave the original one to the Goody Cloyse, the devil made another one out of maple stick.“As they went,he plucked a branch of maple,to serve for boughs, which were wet with evening dew.The movement his fingers touched them, they became strangely withered and dried up,as with a week’s sunshine.”(张勤,唐艳芳33).The important point about the maple stick is that it rots from inside. This one is different from the twisted staff that Goody Cloyse asked for. This implies that Goody Cloyse has apparently undergone confirmation in evil, while Brown is weak and rotten.

The walking stick is a symbol that demonstrates how nothing is as it seems in the text.At one moment it is a withered and twisted stick while at another it changes into a slithering serpent. It is thus symbolically speaking something that has the potential to harm or to help, much like the religious figures Goodman Brown encounters in the dark.It is also worth mentioning that the serpent which the stick becomes is representative of the devil and evil.

There are other symbols in the story, for example, stars symbolizes faint hope;fire, hell and so on.

3.3 Symbolism in the setting

Hawthorne does not choose any scene in his works at random.Certain places in his works indicate special meaning. In“Young Goodman Brown”,the main character’s journey through the forest is on a narrow, dark, and dreary path. The darkness and dreariness symbolize the evil that lurks in the forest. The narrowness of the path symbolizes that Brown is surrounded by evil. The idea that Brown may never return to the state of innocence from which he came is suggested by the fact that the woods seem to close immediately behind him.The trail being long and windy symbolizes how far Brown’s consciousness must travel from innocence to realize the evil in his world.

There are also many instances of symbolism in“Young Goodman Brown”that function in different ways. For instance, the symbols of sunset and night which reflect the two opposing forces of good and evil in the story. This is especially apparent when we consider that the light of late day allows him to see Faith with love whereas when he sees her in darkness,he is suspicious and afraid. At the very beginning of the story Hawthorne writes“Young Goodman Brown came forth,at sunset, into the street of Salem village.”(张勤,唐艳芳26).Here he uses sunset as a symbol to indicate that everything he had will come to an end. Then he finds out that everyone he admires all join in the devil’s meeting. When dark falls,Brown even finds his wife Faith in the meeting. Here the darkness symbolizes that the evil force floods everywhere.

Young Goodman Brown lives in Salem,a location where the fervent witch trials occurred. It indicates authority, like state, church, community and family while the woods indicate wildness.

3.4 Symbolism in the plot

In“Young Goodman Brown”,the use of symbols contributes to the development of the story’s plot. And many arrangements in the plot have symbolic meanings.

In the first paragraph,we learn that Goodman Brown is departing from his wife,Faith,to spend a night in the woods. Her name is no accident,as she will represent Brown’s religious conviction throughout the tale. And Brown’s marriage to Faith symbolizes that he clings to a faith in good in the world. His faith is what he most treasures and after his experience,it is what he is most afraid of losing. At this point in the story,Brown’s consciousness is still keeping him from embracing the evil. The image that Hawthorne creates of Brown putting his head back across the threshold of his house to kiss his wife goodbye symbolizes Brown’s reservations of surrendering to the devil’s evil ways.Brown does, despite his wavering consciousness, surrender to an impulse to follow an evil path and begin his journey into the woods.Faith calls for him to remain with her,but Brown is determined to go his own way.It is sunset as he sets off,and the evening will get steadily darker until the climactic scene of the story, just as the light of good steadily fades from Brown’s heart. He wanders away into the woods, whose dark tangled ways and poor visibility represent the loneliness and confusion of the Godless life. There he meets the devil, whose identity can be found by readers through the snakelike staff he carries.Hawthorne describes the devil as looking quite similar to Brown himself, and of having the air of someone who would be completely at ease in virtually any situation or company. This is to say, that he can thus easily corrupt anyone who grows too attached to life here on the material planet for Puritan theology emphasizes that the devil’s natural domain is here in the real world. There is also symbolic meaning in the initial conversation between Brown and the devil. When the devil asks why Brown is late,Brown replies that“Faith kept me back awhile”(张勤,唐艳芳28).After two of them arrive at the deepest part of the forest, the devil complains about Brown’s slow pace and offers Brown his walking stick. But Brown objects to holding such an instrument of evil.Brown’s rejection of the staff symbolizes Brown’s reluctance to succumb to the evil in the world. Then the pair meet Goody Cloyse and Brown learns that this upstanding woman has also fallen into sin.He makes another attempt to resist the devil’s pull. His words is couched in symbolism,“Is there any reason why I should quit my dear Faith, and go after her?”(张勤,唐艳芳33)The devil says he should go faster now and Brown can rest himself awhile. Then he leaves Brown the maple stick. Not long after that,he sees the minister and Deacon Gookin is on the way to the coven too.He cries,“With heaven above, and Faith below,I will yet stand firm against the devil!”(张勤,唐艳芳35)As he moves out of the darkness,a pink ribbon blows next to him and he sees that Faith is part of the communion that is taking place in the woods. This is the last straw for Brown. He accepts the newly-made staff from the devil and hurries along the same evil path of his contemporaries. The staff symbolizes a tool of evil, and Brown’s accepting it represents his beginning to accept the evil in his world.Another symbol of Brown’s new commitment to evil is the pink ribbon that he catches falling from the sky.The fact that the ribbon drops down symbolizes Brown’s loss of faith in good.So Brown cries,“My Faith is gone!”(张勤,唐艳芳36).Again,the play on the name,“Faith,”suggests that not only is Brown’s wife gone, but also is his faith in the goodness in the world. As the story progresses,in a clearing, there is a large fire. The scene of the witch meeting with the flaming altars symbolizes Brown’s baptism into the evil world that surrounds him.The evil that exists in the people of Salem is made evident by Hawthorne in this scene of devil worship. Here,Brown symbolically loses his faith in all that is good in the world.Brown asks Faith to“resist the wicked one”(张勤,唐艳芳42),but it is already too late for him.His wife Faith says“and may you find all well, when you come back.”(张勤,唐艳芳27)to Brown before he goes into the woods, but things do not go the way they wish.Brown has gone into the woods a carefree young man;enthusiastic, optimistic, and in love.He comes out jaded, hardened, cold and bitter. What Goodman has seen on his journey poisons his soul, leaving him a bitter, miserable man.Goodman chooses isolation rather than turning to God,and he lives a sad life in scorn of all others he has seen that night on his fateful journey into the forest.

4 The Use of Symbolism and Hawthorne’s Puritani-cal Traits

“Young Goodman Brown”is a work fraught with symbolism to reveal the widespread evil in the world. Both the theme and the technique derive mostly from Hawthorne’s puritanical traits.A French thinker Tocqueville once points out that in America the influence of Christianity to people’s soul is so deep that no other countries can surpass.Just like he says, the Calvinist Puritanism has a huge impact on Hawthorne’s outlook too.He lives in America when the second religious reform happens. His forefathers are all staunch Puritans. Some of them are men of prominence in the Puritan theocracy of seventeenth century New England. One of them is a colonial magistrate, notorious for his part in the persecution of the Quakers and another is a judge at the Salem Witchcraft Trail in 1692.At Hawthorne’s time, the family had lived in Salem,Massachusetts for two hundred years. The town is a backward place where the puritanical atmosphere is very thick.Even the name of it—Salem is a short form of Jerusalem. It has such an impact on Hawthorne that he never leaves his hometown psychologically. He once said that he almost felt Salem is doomed to be his hometown like it is the inevitable center of his universe.

The Puritans accept the doctrine of predestination, original sin and total depravity, and limited atonement through a special infusion of grace from God,all that John Calvin, the great French theologian who lived in Geneva had preached.Compared to other Christians, the Puritans emphasize more the belief that human beings are basically evil. Not surprisingly,Hawthorne is obsessed with the theme of sin.To him,all the social problems, including the conflicts between people as well as crime, are caused by the innate evil in mankind. In“Young Goodman Brown”,all the men including“these grave, reputable, and pious people, these elders of the church, these chaste dames and dewy virgins...men of dissolute lives and women of spotted fame, wretches given over to all mean and filthy vice, and suspected even of horrid crimes...”(张勤,唐艳芳39)are attending the devil’s meeting. We can say it is a story of a man whose sins lead him to see that all other people are sinful.“What Brown did was to indulge in sin(represented by the journey into the forest at night)under the mistaken notion that he could break off whenever he wanted to...”(Chunping Dong 21).It illustrates to some extent the influence that the Calvinist doctrine of“original sin”and“total depravity”had upon his mind.

Nor is this all.The American Puritan’s metaphorical mode of perception was chiefly instrumental in calling into being Hawthorne’application of symbolism in his short story.Puritan doctrine contribute to no small extent to Hawthorne’s use of symbolism. To the pious Puritan the physical, phenomenal world was nothing but a symbol of God.To them the world was instinct with meaning by reason of the God’s concurrence and susceptible of interpretation by reason of God's salient acts.Physical life was simultaneously spiritual;every passage of life,en-meshed in the vast context of God’s plan, possessed a delegated meaning. The world was,in a word, one of multiple significance.Under this influence,Hawthorne inclines to use symbolism to express his ideas.

Another place we can find the connection between Hawthorne’s puritanical traits and his use of symbolism in this short story is his reference to the Bible.Because the Bible is the foundation and basis of Puritanical ideology,Hawthorne uses a lot of the characters, plots and structures in the Bible to express his religious thoughts, such as the devil in“Young Goodman Brown”.When he first shows up,he is an middle-aged man with a stick“which bore the likeness of a great black snake,so curiously wrought, that it might almost be seen to twist and wriggle itself, like a living serpent”(张勤,唐艳芳29).This makes one easily think of the old story in the Bible that the devil turns himself into a serpent and slips into the Garden of Eden to seduce Eve and Adam to eat forbidden fruit and give up their original faith.Hawthorne implies the companion of Brown is the devil by describing he has a serpent-like stick. When Brown says to the devil that he is late because of Faith,we can find that Brown has an appointment with the devil. The devil has planned to entice this innocent man.Because Puritanism tells people that man is sinful and man should not disobey the rules of their religion,Brown was instilled with the concept that he should not try anything forbidden. However this taboo makes the devil more tempting to a young man like Brown. With the help of the devil’s staff,Brown runs into the coven in the woods. There he meets everyone he admires in his life. Thus he has an unprecedented understanding of the evil in human nature. In this sense, the Devil wins his fight again. He drives Brown away from his“Faith”.The devil in this story is just like the one in the Bible, who turns into a serpent, seduces human being, gains man’s soul by cheating and makes man degenerate.

5 Conclusion

In Hawthorne’s stories, symbolism is an important technique to express the theme of his work and to manifest human nature. He lets readers know his own thought and sentiments through the specific images or objects in his novel. The names of people, letters, houses, colors and so on have multiple implications. He puts unlimited ideas into limited forms. It is said that God cannot express himself if the Bible is not written in an allegorical way.It is also the same that one cannot grasp the theme of Hawthorne’s fictions if he does not read between lines and find out the implications of the symbols. In“Young Goodman Brown”,symbolism is used by Nathaniel Hawthorne everywhere to further demonstrate his permanent theme that human is born evil. This thought comes from puritanical doctrines like“original sin”and“internal corruption”.Also under the influence of Puritanism,he obtains a pair of eyes that can find symbolic meanings in ordinary things. In the short story, the symbolism is showed through the characters, the objects, the setting and the plot. And such a concept as“Evil is the nature of mankind”(张勤,唐艳芳42)permeates the whole story.
