英语课堂教学中现存的问题之一是词汇教学。如何更好地教授词汇是英语教师应该研究的一个课题。

一、英语词汇教学的重要性

词汇是语言的建筑材料,是语言表达的最基本的成分。它一方面与语音、语法、句型、课文相结合;另一方面在听、说、读、写之中体现。所以,英语教学能否取得效果与词汇教学有着紧密的联系。

二、英语词汇教学中存在的问题

当前,在部分学校的英语课堂教学中,教师孤立地教词、孤立地讲解,孤立地传授知识太多、太细、太碎,是普遍存在的一大弊病。尽管新大纲和新教材对词汇教学提出了要求,但在不少学校的课堂教学中,仍可以看到教师只注意知识的传授,单纯地把词汇教学弄成词典搬家。他们无意识地违背了语言学习的规律,使词汇学习脱离了生活。学生只是通过硬背,孤立地记住几个单词,却无法准确地使用,以致在造句中出现“Close the light.”和“I happy hear the news. ”之类的错句。错误出现在学生身上,问题却存在于我们教学之中。如果这类问题得不到重视和解决,无疑会影响中学外语教学的质量。

三、词、句、篇教学方法的原则

词、句、篇教学方法实际上是指在教学中要遵循“词不离句,句不离文”的原则。教学中要将词汇融合到句子直至语篇中去。词汇只有放到句子或语篇中才会有其实际意义,才能实现其交际功能。

词、句、篇教学方法的主要目的不仅是让学生记住单词的音、形、义,更主要的是让学生在大量的语言实践中学会使用这些单词,从而达到教、学、用三者的统一。

四、词、句、篇教学方法的基本模式

1. 呈现(从课文中找出含有该词语的句子)

(1)由学生从课文中找出含有该词语的句子,在教师的指导下正确理解其意义。(2)教师也可以直接提供课文中含有该词语的句子,让学生去理解。

2. 示范与模仿

由教师口述含有该词语的例句(学生在听的过程中加深理解),学生依次口头重复例句,进行模仿。

3. 扩展

教师让学生通过看图、填空、口头英汉互译等形式操练含有该词语的句子;在学生理解的基础上,帮助其总结和认定所学句子的结构。

4. 初步运用

学生能够初步运用课文中的例词进行口头造句,或自编约四句话的小对话,其内容和意义有一定联系。

5. 综合运用

学生能够将课文中学过的例词连贯起来,口、笔头完成4-8句话的小作文或小对话。该作文可分为:(1)控制性作文,即由教师事先设计情景,给出图画或中文提示,学生根据所提供的条件作文。(2)非控制性作文(自由作文),即教师不提供任何条件,学生自行运用课文中所学的例词自由发挥作文。

例如,在教授“in、on、under”时,可采用如下方法:教师给出一组图片,第一幅图为:书包里有一个苹果;第二幅图为:桌子上有一个桔子;第三幅图为:树底下有一只狗。教师给出例句“There is an apple in the bag.”后,让学生听并重复。然后依次呈现There is an orange on the table. There is a dog under the tree.

学生理解了“in 、on、under”的含义和用法后,根据另一组图模仿造句。如There is a banana in the box. There is a pencil on the desk. There is a ball under the bed.学生能够正确运用“in、on、under”三个词后,教师可进行下一步的操作。

学生根据所提供的图画或实物,用“in、on、under”造句或编出3-4句话。如This is my bedroom. There are some books in the bag. There is a picture on the wall. There is a pair of shoes under the bed.

让学生观察自己的教室,运用“in、on、under”写一篇短文进行描述。通过如此反复的操练,学生对这三个词可以说是滚瓜烂熟,运用自如了。

五、词、句、篇教学方法的运用范围

该教学方法初中三个年级均可使用,难易程度可根据学生的年龄特点及教材的要求进行调整,可采用不同的训练方法分层次教学。三个年级应达到的基本目标分别为:

七年级:要求能够将课文中学过的词语用到句子中,并能根据图画或词语提示自编小对话或补全对话。

八年级:要求能够将课文中学过的词语用到句子中,并能根据提示,口、笔头完成3-5句语法正确、意思连贯的句子(也可以是小对话)。形式可以多样,如:补全对话、看图写话和短文填空等。

九年级:要求能够用课文中所学的词语口、笔头完成5—8句语法正确、意思连贯的短文。形式可以是短文填空、看图完成对话、补全对话、看图写话和自编短文。

六、运用词、句、篇教学方法的体会

在词汇教学中,让学生学有所用,是激发和保持学生学习兴趣的有效手段,学生在语言交际中能够很好地运用所学词汇,并能得到教师和同学的赞赏,就会产生一种成功感。词、句、篇教学方法正是从激发学生的学习动机、提高学习兴趣和培养自信心出发,在学生造句和作文的过程中,挖掘每位学生的潜力,提高课堂效益,减轻学习负担。而从语言的交际性来看,运用是学习的目的,学习过程应该是运用的过程,只有在运用中才能加深对词汇的认识和理解,词汇也在运用中得到储存和记忆。事实证明,通过使用词、句、篇教学方法,学生的学习成绩和英语水平均有普遍的提高。

综上所述,该教学方法起点低,密度高,节奏快,层次清,反馈明,适用于程度不同的学校和程度不同的学生,有利于培养学生听、说、读、写的能力。
