随着网络和计算机技术日新月异的飞速发展,语料库技术为英语教学拓宽了研究领域。学习者语料库是指经过计算机处理的由外语学习者语言使用样本所构成的数据库。借助于计算机可以对学习者语料库进行附码,以便深入研究学习者的语音、词汇、语法等多方面的情况。目前国际影响比较大的学习者语料库主要包括ICLE( 英语学习者国际语料库) 、LINDSEI( 鲁汶英语中介语国际数据库) 和CLC( 剑桥学习者语料库) 等。国内影响较大的语料库主要包括CLEC( 中国学习者英语语料库) 、SWECCL1. 0 & SWECCL 2. 0( 中国学生口笔语语料库) 和PACCEL( 中国大学生英汉汉英口笔译语料库) 等[1]。

学习者语料库可直接基于其数据驱动让学习者进行语言方面的学习,或间接地把基于学习者语料库的研究发现应用到外语教学中并开展有效的课堂干预[2]。另外,教师可以开发针对学习者的小型语料库,解决特定语言学习与教学环境中的实际难题。

鉴于鲜有学者建立并研究以医学为特色的英语学习者语料库,笔者结合句酷批改网和语料库技术建立医学特色大学英语作文学习者语料库,基于该语料库对三个档次的学生作文首词和尾词的词频进行分析,研究不同水平的学生使用英语的特征,并将研究结果在教学中进行应用。

一、研究方法

首先,设计与布置作文。笔者的课题组设计了8道医学特色大学英语作文试题,分别为My View on Euthanasia,Advantages and Disadvantages of the GM Foods,My View on the Relationship Between Doctors and Patients,Prevention is Better than Cure,My Definition of a Good Doctor,How to Keep Psychologically Healthy,My View on Sub-health和My View on Healthy Diet。题目为与医学相关的题目,出题形式采用的是最新的大学英语六级作文的形式,即给出题目与简单的语言性描述,不硬性规定作文的框架,上述8道作文题均公布于句酷批改网( http: / /www. pigai. org/) 上,要求学生在规定的时间内至少写作150字,并设置了不允许复制粘贴的功能。

其次,收集1 000份以上不同层次学生的作文。课题组选取了北京中医药大学不同层次的医学专业12个行政班的学生: 2个医学专业基础班、2个医学专业提高班、2个医学专业七年制班、1个岐黄八年制班、3个卓越九年制班、1个医学专业研究生班和1个医学英语班。要求每位学生提交2篇作文,保证每篇作文题目收集到来自三个不同类型行政班学生的作文,最终收到1 021篇学生作文。

再次,根据所整理的成绩对作文进行分档。登陆批改网,下载并整理学生第一次提交作文的初始成绩与未根据批改网建议修改的初始作文,将学生分为三个档位: A档( 80分以上,共收集417份作文) 、B档( 70—79. 5分,共收集446份作文) 、C档( 69. 5分以下,共收集158份作文) 。

最后,运用语料库技术对不同档位的学生作文明显差异之处进行分析。将所得到的作文进行除噪得到干净的文本,之后将其建立成为医学特色英语作文学习者语料库。用语料库标记软件Tree Tagger 2对语料库进行词性附码,用语料库软件Power GREP. v4. 1. 2和BFSU PowerConc 1. 0 beta 20对标记了词性附码的文本进行分析,对三个档次的作文进行分析与对比研究。

二、研究结果

( 一) 作文首词高频词汇的相同点

( 1) In_IN( IN = Preposition or subordinating conjunction) 为A、B、C三个档位作文的第一高频的首词词汇,但是其在A档中的比例( 8. 2% ) 明显高于在B档( 6. 6% ) 和C档( 6. 8% ) 中的比例; ( 2) The_DT( DT = Article and determiner) 为A、B、C三个档位作文的第二高频的首词词汇,以其为首词的句子在三个档位作文中的比例比较接近,分别为4. 7% 、4. 6% 和5. 0% ; ( 3) It_PP( PP = Personal pronoun) 是A档和B档的第三高频的首词词汇,A档和C档中均有3. 8% 的作文首词选择使用It_PP; ( 4) A、B、C三个档中以As_IN为首词的句子的比例比较接近,分别为3. 3% 、3. 0% 和2. 7% ; ( 5 ) A、B、C三个档中以What _ WP( WP = Wh-pronoun) 为首词的句子的比例也比较接近,分别为2. 1% 、2. 4% 和2. 4% 。

( 二) 作文首词高频词汇的不同点

( 1) However_RB( RB = Adverb) 在A、B、C三个档位作文首词使用频率呈现递减趋势,它是A档首词中第五高频的词汇,比例为2. 6% ,它在B档和C档的首词中则不属于前十高频的词汇,其在B档首词中的比例为1. 9% ,而C档则减为1. 0% ; ( 2) But_CC( CC = Coordinating conjunction)的使用频率与However相反,在A、B、C三个档位作文中呈现的是递增趋势,其比例分别为2. 1% 、2. 9% 和4. 1% ;( 3) For_IN在A、B、C三个档位作文首词使用频率呈现递减趋势,它是A档首词中第六高频的词汇,比例为2. 5% ,它在B档和C档的首词中则不属于前十高频的词汇,其在B档首词中的比例为2. 1% ,而C档则减为1. 2% ; ( 4 ) On_IN在A、B、C三个档位作文首词使用频率呈现递减趋势,其比例分别为2. 3% 、1. 6% 和1. 1% ; ( 5) To_TO在A、B、C三个档位作文首词使用频率呈现递减趋势,其比例分别为2. 2% 、1. 7% 和0. 8% ; ( 6) So_RB在A、B、C三个档位作文首词使用频率呈现递增趋势,其比例分别为1. 9% 、3. 3%和4. 2% ; ( 7) We_PP在B档和C档的比例比较接近,分别为3. 0% 和2. 8% ,然而在A档的比例则减为2. 1% ; ( 8) I_PP在A、B、C三个档位作文首词使用频率呈现递增趋势,其比例分别为1. 6% 、2. 2% 和3. 8% ; ( 9) And_CC在A、B、C三个档位作文首词使用频率呈现递增趋势,其比例分别为1. 8% 、2. 2% 和3. 4% 。

( 三) 作文尾词高频词汇的相同点

( 1) 三个档次作文的尾词均主要以名词为主,其中health_NN( NN = Common noun,singular or mass) 在A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词中均属于第一高频的词汇,其比例呈现为递增趋势,分别为3. 1% 、3. 8% 和4. 3% ; ( 2) life_NN在A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词中均属于前三高频的词汇,其比例分别为2. 4% 、3. 4% 和3. 1% ; ( 3) it_PP在A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词中均属于前五高频的词汇,其比例分别为2. 7% 、2. 2% 和2. 0% ; ( 4) patients _ NNS ( NNS =Common noun,plural) 在A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词中均属于前六高 频的词汇,其比例分 别为1. 9% 、1. 5% 和2. 0% ; ( 5) healthy_JJ ( JJ = Adjective) 是A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词中唯一的形容词,比例也比较接近,分别为1. 4% 、1. 3% 和1. 4% ; ( 6) world_NN虽然只在A档中成为前十高频的尾词词汇,但它在A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词所占比例十分接近,分别为1. 0% 、0. 6% 和0. 5% ; ( 7)disease_NN虽然只在B档中成为前十高频的尾词词汇,但它在A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词所占比例十分接近,分别为0. 7% 、1. 0% 和0. 8% ; ( 8) food_NN在B、C两个档位作文中均为第十高频的尾词词汇,在A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词的所占比例分别为0. 6% 、0. 9% 和1. 1% ; ( 9)them_PP为C档作文第九高频的尾词,在A、B、C三个档位作文的尾词所占比例十分接近,分别为0. 8% 、0. 8% 和1. 0% 。

( 1) society_NN在A档作文中为第五高频的尾词词汇,比例为1. 2% ,而在B档和C档中则并不属于前十高频的尾词词汇,其比例分别只有0. 7% 和0. 3% ; ( 2) treatment_NN的情况与society_NN类似,在A档中的比例为1. 2% ,而在B档和C档中其比例分别只有0. 3% 和0. 2% ; ( 3)doctor_NN在A、B、C三个档位作文尾词使用频率呈现递增趋势,其比例分别为1. 2% 、1. 7% 和3. 2% ; ( 4) diet_NN在B档作文中为第四高频的尾词词汇,比例为1. 8% ,而在C档和A档中则分别为1. 5% 和1. 1% ; ( 5) on_IN在A、B、C三个档位作文尾词使用频率呈现递增趋势,其比例分别为0. 5% 、0. 9% 和1. 2% 。

三、研究结果的教学应用

( 一) 将关于首词和尾词的研究结果对学生进行展示,将研究结果服务于英语作文教学,进行首尾词方面的专题讲座,并设计相应的练习。( 1) 关于高频首词的共同点,定冠词the和人称代词it这些词看似简单,然而却有很多学生掌握得并不牢固,因此对于学生们最常使用的高频首词进行了基于语境的语法讲解和练习,巩固与提高学生的语法水平。( 2) 关于高频首词的不同点,鼓励学生多采用A档作文的用法,例如,在表示转折时首词应多用However而少用But; 少用I或We作为首词,鼓励学生多尝试使用被动语态和非谓语动词,令作文句式有所变化。( 3) 关于以名词为主的高频尾词的共同点,以其为例着重提高学生的词汇量,拓展学生的语言能力。例如,在描写失眠和亚健康的作文中很多学生描写到食欲减退和厌食等情况,建议学生将高频尾词disease进行拓展,鼓励学生多使用更为精确的名词,例如anorexia或bulimia。( 4) 关于以名词为主的高频尾词的不同点,有针对性地对每个高频词汇进行拓展性讲解。例如,A档作文以society作为尾词的明显较多,因此建议学生写作文时多将观点拓展到整个社会; 再如,A档作文不仅仅用doctor表示医生,而会描述不同领域的医生,仅以physician为例,A档中有7名学生使用,B档的作文减少为3名,C档则为0。因此,建议学生使用更为精确的词汇,包括比较常见的physician、surgeon、dentist和psychiatrist等,以及在学术文章中经常出现的cardiologist、neurologist、pediatrician、obstetrician和gynecologist等。综上,通过首尾词的讲解让学生们理解大学英语作文的写作不应只注重语法,更应注重句式的变换以及精细词汇的使用,医学话题的作文更应该注意拓展学生的医学词汇。

( 二) 将研究结果进行延伸,进行更深层次领域的教学探索。将学生分成10人以下为一组的若干学术小组,选取2011年北京大学出版社出版的《中文核心期刊要目总览》[3]中所有的中医核心期刊,通过CNKI搜集并下载这些期刊2013年的所有论文,学术小组的学生以小组为单位抽样选取部分双语摘要建立摘要语料库,其中每部期刊每期抽样选取1篇并分解为目的、方法、结果和结论四个部分。基于上述语料库软件研究中医学术论文英文摘要整体和不同部分的首尾词特征,对比医学摘要不同部分与普通医学特色英语作文的首尾词区别。例如,目的部分“Objective: ”后面最为高频的首词词汇为“To”,其搭配的前三高频的词汇依次为study,establish和observe。抽样整体摘要前三的高频尾词( 除数字外) 为method、group( s)和respectively。

四、结论

基于语料库软件对医学特色英语作文学习者语料库里每句话的首词和尾词展开分析后发现,不同档位的学生在使用首词和尾词时会有相同点和不同点,针对这些异同在教学方面进行了初步的应用。此外,将医学特色英语作文学习者语料库与中医论文摘要双语语料库的对比研究也进一步拓展了学生的学术视野,增强了学生的研究能力。

Many people feel it is boring and difficult to remember them, I remember vocabulary by reading English articles. For me, the most difficult thing is speaking.
