“声音词”是我们根据英语写作教学、词汇教学、翻译实践和翻译理论研究提出的一个新概念, 包括英语中摹拟现实物质的各种声音的词, 即单纯摹声词, 如摹拟盘子落地声的clatter和摹拟门轴转动声的creak等。以摹声词根构成的词, 即语言学上称为具有“声音象征作用”的词, 如美国伊士曼柯达公司使用的商品名称Kodak, 听起来就像相机快门的响动声, 显然其构词也是源于对声音的模仿, 以及表示声音名称的词, 如天籁:Sounds of nature等。

“声音词”, 其实是一个“词族”问题, 这些在意义上有某种理据联系的词, 尽管在语法上可能不属于同一个“词类”, 但是它们往往可以构成具有核心意义的一个“词族”大类。

1 英语“声音词”的类别

1.1 描写词汇学的类别

词汇学主要研究语言词汇的构成和组织系统, 探索词在词汇系统中相互联系、制约、对立、因应等各种关系, 探索词汇系统的特点和规律。

1.2 语义学的类别

语言学的语义学研究目的在于找出语义表达的规律性、内在解释、不同语言在语义表达方面的个性以及共性。

1.3 语法学的类别

主要研究英语声音词的词类和词性问题。

2 英语“声音词”的词法特点

大多数英语声音词都具有一词双性甚至多性的特点, 可充当名词, 也可作为动词, 在此基础上还可以继续派生出分词、副词。简言之, 英语主要有三种构词法:转化、派生及合成。事实上, 英语声音词的构词以上三种词法特点均有涉及, 除此之外, 还与其它构词方式有关, 如:拟声法、缩略法和混合法等。

3 英语“声音词”的语法功能

主要研究英语“声音词”的句法功能, 即在句子中充当的成分, 在这方面, 英语“声音词”要比汉语的拟声词灵活得多, 前者在句子中除了可充当主、谓、宾、定、状、补的成分以外还可以成为独立结构。例如:Then clatter, clatter up the stairs, Tom closed the door hurriedly. (紧跟着楼梯上传来了哒哒哒的脚步声。汤姆赶紧把门关上了。)

4 英语“声音词”的表达作用

4.1 风格学特征

语言风格作为语言应用的新兴学科, 是从修辞学和文艺理论中分化出来的, 本课题正是从语言风格学的基础理论入手, 来探讨英语“声音词”的风格学特征, 研究的是广义的风格学, 即以索绪尔以来的现代语言学为基础, 研究范围不限于书面语言, 也扩充到了口语层面。其中包括对声音词的表现风格和语体风格的研究。

4.1.1 语体风格

声音词在英语口语中的应用通常给人自由、随意的感觉, 多以简单句或短句的形式出现。在书面语中, 尽管会以复合句或长句的形式出现, 但仍然让使用者或倾听者觉得朗朗上口, 具有气势。

4.1.2 表现风格

声音词用来形象生动的表达人自身的情感, 对事物的感觉或描绘当时的情景。在口语中, 多以感叹词的形式出现。

此外, 值得一提的是, 英语“声音词”有两种表现形式, 一种是直接的表达, 多用于模仿动物的叫声, 如moo, miaow, quack等, 分别用来模仿牛、猫以及鸭的叫声。另一种则是间接描述该动作所发出的声音, 如pour, clap等, 分别用来模仿倒水时哗啦哗啦的声音及鼓掌时产生的噼里啪啦声。

4.2 形象色彩

对声音词形象的感受程度, 与人们对声音原型的记忆表象的深刻与否有关, 与人们对这种语言的语音感知的强弱也有关。声音词所产生的形象感, 包括听觉, 视觉, 触觉, 动觉等, 均可用于模仿各种声音, 使描述更具声情并茂的效果。

在这一点上, 从使用频率和效果来看, 我们可以举叠声词为例, 这些词汇通常会被运用到口语表达当中, 在使用过程中会形成活灵活现的语言效果。以下面的粗体单词为例:

4.2.1 名词叠声词

(1) Not being a mother, I found the chit-chat exceedingly dull.javascript:; (我没当母亲, 所以觉得那样的闲谈无聊透顶。)

(2) No one expects him to get involved in the hurly-burly of campaigning. (谁也没有料到他会加入到乱哄哄的竞选活动。)

在4.2.1的例举中, chit-chat的使用会让人产生了听觉感, 而hurly-burly会给人强烈的视觉感。

4.2.2 动词叠声词

(1) Jack was a poor lecturer because he hemmed and hawed too much. (杰克不是个好的演讲者, 因为他哼哼唧唧, 停顿太多。)

(2) James perches on a nearby tree andaims hisbeak in the same direction.Rat-a-tat-tat, he calls into the air.http://dict.youdao.com/search?le=eng&q=rat%20tat&keyfrom=dict.index (詹姆斯落在附近一棵树上, 嘴巴指着塔尖的方向, 咚—啊—咚—咚, 向着天空高唱起来。)

在4.2.2的例举中, 每个叠声词读起来都朗朗上口, 动感十足。

4.2.3 形容词叠声词

(1) Books are often stacked in higgledy-piggledy piles on the floor.javascript:; (书本经常乱七八糟地堆在地板上。)

(2) And the mountains are very dangerous zigzag roads and so people can only go very slowly.http://dict.youdao.com/search?q=lj:zigzag&ljtype=blng&ljblngcont=0&le=eng&keyfrom=dict.main.moreblng (群山很危险, 到处是曲折的路, 人们只能慢慢走。)

在4.2.3的例举中, 均是对物或人的状态的描绘, 视觉感十分突出, 惟妙惟肖。

4.2.4 副词叠声词

(1) They ran away helter-skelter, but the police gained ground upon them. (他们仓皇逃走, 警察紧追而来。)

在4.2.4的例举中, 视觉、动觉感也被展现得淋漓尽致。

4.3 象征作用

声音象征是指用词的声音来揭示词的某种含义, 它们有词源依据和语义依据, 是一种相当普遍但又很难准确判定的语言现象。声音词的象征作用在文学作品中也是随处可见, 应用十分广泛, 例子数不胜数, 下面以三部作品为例见证英语“声音词”的象征作用在西方经典著作中的展现。

马克吐温在小说《哈克贝瑞·芬恩历险记》中有如下描述:

...then cones a h-whach-bum!bum!bumble-umble-umbumbum-bum-bum-and the thunder would go rumbling and grumbling away...

上述内容巧妙地把现实主义的真实性和浪漫主义的抒情性很好地糅合在一起, 上述段落中连续使用了10几个声音词, 将大自然中的刮风声、下雨声、打雷声描写得惟妙惟肖, 让读者有种在探险途中的感觉。

塞缪尔·泰勒·柯勒律治在《古舟子咏》中有如下描述:

It cracked and growled, and roared and howled,

Like noises in a swound!

上述诗歌以水手和信天翁为主线, 使用简洁的结构和朴素的语言生动地向人们讲述了一个罪与赎罪的故事。句中连续使用了cracked, growled, roared和howled四个声音词来渲染文字的音响, 将冰面裂开时发出的各种声响描绘得淋漓尽致。冰雪的怒吼与咆哮好似人昏厥时听到的轰鸣巨响, 暗示着大事件的到来, 让读者在不知不觉中步入了诗的意境中。

布朗宁在《彩衣吹笛人》中有如下描述:

And ere three shrill notes the pipe uttered.

You heard as if an enemy muttered,

And the muttering grew to a mighty rumbling,

And out of the houses the rats come tumbling,

Great rats, small rats, lean rats, brawny rats,

Brown rats, black rats, grey rats, tawny rats...

上述故事讲述的是具有魔幻色彩的笛子手借助一只具有魔力的笛子将哈默尔恩的形态各异、颜色不一的老鼠从鼠洞引到河里统统淹死, 为当地居民除了大害后发生的一系列事件。被标注黑体的声音词通过运用鼻音的发音特点, 象征成百上千只老鼠发出的低沉躁动声, 由小到大、由远及近, 诗人同时运用了夸张的描写手法, 凸显了诗歌动态、声势的描绘效果, 让读者有种身临其境的感觉的同时, 也成功地激发了读者的阅读和研究兴趣。诗歌通过运用浊辅音在rumbling和tumbling两个单词中的发音, 象征着遂不及防的爆发力。此外, 诗歌中摩擦音在单词uttered、muttered及muttering的运用也更加凸显了老鼠大军移山倒海般的威武阵势, 诗中的声音词及最后一句中颜色词的运用, 为诗人对故事的叙述增添了不少亮点。

除上述例子外, 一些字母也具有声音作用, 如上述例1中的字母m, b, r以及具有描述咝声作用的字母s, 例如风的飕飕声和具有描述咔嚓声作用的字母c, 例如扣动扳机的声响。这些字母所具有的明显共性是它们的发音能使人产生联想, 带人进入某种意境或给人某种概念的提示。

本文从宏观及微观角度对英语“声音词”的表达作用进行了较有针对性的分析解读, 希望该研究能对正在从事该领域研究的学者们提供借鉴。

那是一个炎炎夏日,英语老师打算挑几个人参加英语比赛,我也很想参加,可我知道一定没我的份。老师却突然对我说了一句:“你也去尝试一下吧!”我听到后,犹豫不决:按目前的英语成绩是不可能获奖的,但机会难得,到底参不参加呢?思考了许久:还是去试试吧!

回到家,早早把作业写完,就练英语发音;下课后,利用别人玩的时间,来补习自己的不足;午睡时,我也利用睡前的二十分钟来默默背资料。总之,我把握好分分秒秒,勤学苦练。尽管我没有学英语的天赋,但勤能补拙吧。更何况,这次的比赛意义非凡,对于我来说是一项全新的自我挑战,人生的第一次正式比赛。

经过几个星期的苦练,检验的时刻终于来了。我忐忑不安地走进多媒体室,抽了出场顺序——6号。谢天谢地,幸好不是第一个出场。看着场上的选手们个个都那么自信,自我介绍流利顺畅。我突然有点怯场了,压力很大。很快就要轮到我上场了,好友轻轻握了握我的手说:“等会儿上场时,放开些,相信自己。我支持你,加油!”

终于到我上场了,我忐忑不安地走到舞台中央,做了一个深呼吸,可还是有些紧张,手心冒汗。“3,2,1,OK!”

河北省高等学校“世纪之星”英语演讲大赛高职高专组的决赛是河北省教育厅和河北省高等学校外语教学研究会联合举办的全省英语演讲赛事, 旨在“提高高职学生英语交际能力, 并为高职英语教育领域的专家、教师和管理者搭建一个探索英语教学改革、交流英语教学经验的平台。”作为亲临“世纪之星”决赛现场的指导教师我感受强烈、感悟颇多。

一、演讲比赛反映出的教学问题

英语演讲比赛就如同一面客观清晰的镜子, 透过它参赛学生能看到自己的优势和不足, 英语教师也能发现自己在教学中存在的问题和有待改进的地方。

1. 演讲比赛中显示出的学生英语学习存在的问题有:

(1) 学生当众表达缺乏自信心。高考英语降分之前, 高中英语教学基本以应试为主, 尤其是偏远地区, 长期忽视了学生英语表达交际能力。由于长期缺乏口语锻炼, 加之多数来自农村的高职生在中小学期间的发音很不标准, 相对本科生自卑感较强, 导致高职学生英语课堂凭借不愿或者不敢开口讲英语的惯性而进入“缺乏自信心一不开口说英语—缺乏自信心”的恶性循环。

(2) 交际能力不足。高职高专学生学习英语主要的动力为“不过英语三级A或B不让毕业”和“就业单位青睐四六级证书”。他们更愿注重的是英语读写能力, 平时爱做英语过级模拟题。高职英语教师的“素质教育”对于被迫忙于“应试”的高职生来说只能是一厢情愿。因为没有英语语言环境, 同学之间罕用英语交流, 高职英语口语一直处于被忽视的状态。

(3) 思辨缺席。高职高专生学历低, 为了求职疲于应付各级各类证书以及自考、专接本等各种考试, 拼命寻求理解的标准性和答案的惟一性, 妨碍了学习在具体情境中广泛而灵活的迁移, 导致他们缺乏独立自主的思维和判断能力, 其发散性思维、逆向思维被束缚, 从而造成他们英语演讲比赛中的“思辨缺席”。

(4) 知识面狭窄。纵观历年高职高专“世纪之星”演讲决赛, 很多高水平的演讲者和演讲赛冠军选手之所以能够在演讲中纵横捭阖, 对各种知识和语料信手拈来, 许多并非是英语专业学生.此中有真意, 博览即谜底!这种现象就提示我们, 广泛阅读是演讲的必修课。阅读是培养思维的有效手段, 而从阅读当中找到思维的活跃点对于演讲来说是非常重要的。英专选手往往言之有度易, 言之有物难!在“世纪之星”演讲初复赛的提问环节中严重表现出大部分的参赛选手的知识面极为狭窄。许多学生只专心干本专业的学习完全忽略了社会、历史、哲学等学科的知识, 甚至在日常生活中都没有阅读报刊杂志的习惯, 更不用说去涉猎有关的英语新闻了。

(5) 眼高口低。2013年“世纪之星”高职高专组决赛总结发言时外教评委Jim尤其提到选手对数字的表达这一最基本的技能都不熟练。

2. 演讲比赛也折射出大学英语教学的诸多不足:

(1) 传统的“填鸭式”教学模式导致学生不会主动去思考问题, 而只是被动地接收。英语教师教学内容不能与时俱进, 学生缺乏兴趣, 英语课堂教学缺乏师生互动、学生互动。

(2) 英语等级考试仍是评价英语教师教学效果和学生英语水平的主要依据, 甚至有些院校对于获奖的学生及指导教师并不重视。对其用智慧和汗水换来的光荣, 既无物质上的奖励, 也没精神上的鼓励。获奖师生的大赛证书并不与其年终考核或综合测评并不挂钩。

(3) 有些外语教师过于倚重知识点的讲解, 注重“教”的传授过程, 忽视“学”的认知过程;或对网络多媒体技术过于依赖, 将“人灌”变为“电灌”, Power Point既无power也无point, 很难培养出能够适应世界经济全球化的真正具有英语交际能力的人才。以讲授为主的传统英语课堂教学模式只重知识而轻能力, 使得高职英语教学陷入了教师教得苦、学生学得累、学生英语应用能力差的困境。

(4) 目前中国英语教学的一个最重要的问题, 就是老师口语、听力不行, 因此很多老师倾向于语法和阅读教学, 而忽视了口语和听力。更可怕的是, 高职英语教师即使在英语口语上不想误人子弟而进修深造, 多半也已过英语口语习得的黄金期, 如何克服语言的石化, 练就一口流利、地道的英语口语驾驭课堂, 也是一大难题。

二、面向职场口语的英语教改方向

高职高专实用英语口语大赛内容包括三个部分:职场陈述、图表描述和情景交流。其中“情景交流”最为关键, 进入省决赛而未能荣获二等奖以上的选手大败于此。情景交流即参赛者抽取一个场景题目, 根据题目的要求扮演其中的一个角色, 与外籍主试官进行一对一的现场问答式交流。由此可见, 情景语境自始至终都贯穿于英语演讲中, 对于考察学生的英语综合运用能力起到重要作用。单纯讲授英语, 并不能保证学生将来能称职地完成用英语进行演讲的任务。布卢姆指出:“成功的外语课堂教学应在课内创设更多情景, 让学生有机会运用自己所学的语言材料。”为此, 高职英语教师应该以“真实”铸就口语课堂之魂。为了改变高职学生在跨文化交流中“接受有余, 输出不足”的现状, 实现“鲜活交际”这一口语教学的基本使命, 英语教师应该精选各类情景真实的语料, 融入大量的语用风格, 结合各行各业地道“行话”, 创设或模拟真实演讲语境, 打造英语课堂上的“真枪实弹演习”, 让学生身临其境, 自然地进入鲜活口语交流, 改变以往仅靠背句子的填鸭式交际口语教学, 有效地实现从真实输入到鲜活输出的转化。

三、结语

高职的学生参加英语口语技能大赛, 与其说是学生赛场的竞技与角逐, 毋宁说是英语指导教师教学的交流与博弈, 乃至高职院校英语教学风格的PK与切磋。高职高专英语教师应该以全国高职高专实用英语大赛为参照, 不断提高自身英语专业素质, 创新英语教学模式, 激发学生学习英语的兴趣, 多种渠道提升学生英语口语输出能力。
