Many researches have been carried out on motivation inEnglish learning and teaching,but few studies have examinedmiddle school students' English learning motivation,even thoughEnglish has always played an important role within the middleschool curriculum,and quite a number of middle school studentshave often come across more or less different kinds of problemswith their English learning.Clearly this is an area needing greaterexploration to find out the junior high school students' beliefsconcerning ELF motivational components and their beliefs thatnegatively influence the increase of motivation and if there areways to integrate the understanding of motivation to the teachingactivities in the English classroom.

2.A Survey and Major Findings

The present study aims at investigating the middle schoolstudents' motivational beliefs about English learning,and theinfluence of their beliefs on their motivational behavior.Theauthor has conducted a survey among 25 middle school studentsto find out their beliefs that negatively influence the increase ofmotivation,and to present some implications for junior middleschool English teaching and learning in Chinese context.Specifically,the study addresses the following two questions:

1) what types of motivation do Chinese urban junior highschool students have for learning English?

2)How does learners’ motivation influence their motivational behavior?

The instruments used in this study are a telephone interviewof the motivation for learning English.

The results and findings obtained from the survey arereported as follows.

1) Immediate achievement is the main driving forces forstudents to exert effortful behavior out of their regular Englishclass.

2) Students are mostly motivated by utilitarian purposes,suchas striving for a career,meeting an educational requirement tolearn English.

3) Learning situational motivation proves to be an importantfactor that exerts its impact on learners in this study.

4) Most of the participants show interest in English.Interestcan be derived from favorable attitudes toward native speakersor their culture or from preference for the language itself.Butaccording to the present study,although interest is a significanttype of motivation students present,it is not closely related tolearners’ motivational intensity.

5) Correct understanding about the value of learning Englishis still lacking.

6) Learners’ Immediate achievement motivation does notinfluence their motivational behaviors favorably.

This finding shows that most Chinese urban junior highschool students are motivated to learn English just for going to abetter senior high school.In other words,they learn English mainlyfor the purpose of passing examinations.Therefore,they highlyvalue performance goals like improving test skills in standardizedexamination.However,they do no attach as much importance tolong-term and mastery goals as to short-term and performancegoals probably because long-term goals and mastery goals seemto be a little remote to them and they do not perceive immediatebenefits from these goals as they can get from short-term andperformance goals.

3.Suggestions for altering Chinese urban junior schoolstudents' negative motivational beliefs

According to the findings of the survey,problems thatnegatively influence the improvement of motivational strengthfor the junior high school students become clear.The resultsof the survey indicate that examination-related goals are themain driving forces for students to exert effortful behavior;however,their desire for achieving long-term and masterygoals is weaker.In addition to over-emphasis on short-term andperformance goals,students' other negative motivational beliefsinclude high perception of English learning cost,attribution ofprevious failure to uncontrollable factors and perceiving teachersas controlling and less informative.Setting of long-term andmastery goals develop in a downward trend while perception ofcost develops in an upward trend.Proper steps should be taken toremedy these beliefs.

对此,本文拟适当结合中考英语写作的要求。从列举初中生英文写作中的常见弊病出发并作适当的评析。以资同行参考。

一、中心不明,切题不准

英文写作与中文写作一样也要求文章内容主旨要明确,即要有一定的中心事件并体现一定的中心思想。但初中生在英文写作中常忽视这个重要问题,原因是他们把主要精力放于如何使 句子表达正确上。事实上,许多英语教师在批阅学生英文习作时也往往以发现学生的语句错误为重点,这也有意无意地给学生的写作起到了导向作用。在此影响下,学生的英文习作常显得结构松散,"流水账"特点明显,令人有言之无物的感觉。本人在中考阅卷中也发现,很多考生在动手写作前缺乏必要的"审题"环节,所写内容与作文材料之间没有合理联系,与文章所要体现的主旨有较大的偏离。所以,尽管有些考生语言功底挺不错,语言表达流畅,语误也很少,但终因"切题"不够准确,捕捉信息不够全面而导致不能拿到高档分。

二、文法生硬,内容单薄

我们固然不能要求初中生的英文写作要有很高的文采。但也不能不对其篇章的完整性有个最起码的要求。然而在现行的英文写作训练(包括中考写作要求)中。也许是为了易于题目的表述和操作评价的缘故。初中生往往只要求按图画内容写6至8句话或一篇80字左右的短文。这使得许多初中生在写作中顺理成章地以"写足字数"而不是以"完成文章"为目的。这样的结果是文章中单句独立性过强,连词很少得到自然恰当地运用。从文章整体角度看,句与句之间有较为明显的割裂感,衔接性不够,缺乏语言的流畅与连贯,显得生硬。甚至也有些同学对文章字数计算非常"精确",刚好达到6句或大约80个字即停笔,自以为已经符合写作的要求。而事实上,这类文章往往给人以过于"粗线条"的感觉,因为篇幅过于短小,内容不够翔实而显得单薄不够丰满,因而不太可能得到较高的评价。

三、标点符号误用

英文的标点符号与中文的标点符号总的来说较为一致。另外,标点符号毕竟只是一种辅助文章内容表情达意的停顿性符号,其本身在文章中不起主导性作用。这两方面的原因使得我们很多的英语教师自身也对英语中标点符号的使用没有给予足够的重视。然而,正是这种漠视滋长了学生对标点符号运用的随意性。因而,目前中学生英文写作中标点符号误用的现象相当普遍,这也多少给作品的整体美感带来了些负面影响。

错误一:I like apples,bananas, pears, oranges and so on.评析:英语中无"顿号",句中的"顿号"应当改为"逗号".

错误二:Im a middle school student.评析:英语中的"句号"为实心小圆点,句中的"。"应改为"·"

错误三:There were many kinds of animals on the farm,cows,dogs,chickens,pigs……评析:英语中的"省略号"为三点,中文中的"省略号"才是六点。

错误四:The name of the library book was《Red Star Over China》。评析:英语中的书名号以"双引号"表示,所以应改为"Red Star over China".

错误五:We have a new classmate this term,his name is Jack, he comes from America.评析:这是受中文影响在学生标点使用中存在最广泛的"逗号错误"。英语中如果两个陈述句结构,意思完整则通常以"句号"结尾,这一点与中文中可以连续在几个完整的句子后加"逗号"截然不同。所以,例句中应该把两个"逗号"都改为"句号"。

错误六:He said I will go with Mike.评析:这句直接引语错在标点漏用,并引起了歧义。正确的写法应当是

He said:"I will go with Mike."

四、文化差异错误

文化差异错误在中学生写作中存在范围较广,出现频率也较高,其产生的主要原因是中西方语言文化的差别。这类错误以其明显的汉语化特点使英语表达变得不合乎习惯,因而严重影响了中学生英文写作的质量。下面列举初中生英文写作中一些最常见,最基础的语言错误。

例一:My name is Mǎ Xiǎo Míng . His name is Wáng Gǎng.英语中没有汉语的声调符号,名字的拼写有固定的要求,所以上句中名字的正确写法应当是:Ma Xiaoming,Wang Gang.

例二:Hang Zhou is a beautiful city.城市等地名的书写应连在一起,如Beijing,Hangzhou,Fujian,Xiamen,Xian等,不能象拼写人的名字那样分开写。

例三:Mr Robert lives next to Uncle Smith。 Mr,Mrs,Miss等称呼词应放于"姓"的前面,这一点中学生基本上比较清楚,之所以犯*Mr Robert这种错误是因为他们不知道Robert在英语中是用作"名"而不是"姓"。Uncle Smith这种表达错误是因为学生按照自己的推测,以为uncle一词与Mr等词一样也应置于"姓"的前面,而事实上uncle,aunt这类称呼词是放于"名"而不是"姓"的前面,如Uncle John,Aunt Mary等。例句中的Smith是一个"姓",因而不能与uncle连用。

例四:I and my father like playing basketball.

*Tom very likes China.

*He studied not very hard.

*A book is on the desk.

*In the shop the people are very friendly.(商店里的工作人员服务态度很好。)以上的错句在初中生的英文写作中出现频率很高,我们能清楚地看出其表达的汉语化倾向。面对一个单句,学生在思考后往往能自行改正,但在实际写作中却总有为数不少的学生屡屡犯错。其中there be句型的运用以及介词结构作定语时的位置这两项内容犯错率更是居高不下。

At this joyful Mid-autumn Festival, even though we cannot return home to spend this beautiful night with our family, we can get together here and enjoy the harmony and delight.

As a matter of fact, the whole company is a large family. Since I joined in this warm family one year ago, I have learned much from the work. I learned how to adapt myself into the ever-changing environment in the possibly shortest time. I learned how to keep close coordination with others. I learned how to open my mind to new things and different opinions and accept others’ valuable advice modestly. I learned how to manage my time more effectively.

“I am a fresher! ”I always say to myself. But when I saw the really new partners. I realisied I have been here for 1 year!

笔者所任教的学校位于东部沿海发达地区, 初中学生的英语高于全国平均水平、词汇量达到一定量的积累。英语教学如果仅仅局限于规定使用的课本教材, 显然不能满足教学的需要。因此, 根据实际情况, 积极利用英文报刊杂志来补充和加强英语教学是必要的。

一、选择适合学情的报刊杂志

首先, 所选择的英文报刊杂志应有趣味性。初中生为13-15岁的儿童, 因此, 所选择的英文报刊杂志需符合学生的年龄特征, 能满足儿童对事物的好奇心和兴趣。这就要求报刊杂志中的文章生动有趣, 文中配有彩色的插图和照片, 对学生有吸引力。

其次, 所选择的英文报刊杂志应有时代性。所选文章需贴近学生、贴近生活、贴近时代。只有贴近学生实际的事物才有吸引力并引起学生的共鸣。通过阅读这样的文章, 学生在增长英语知识、提高英语水平的同时, 加强了与外界的联系, 紧跟时代的步伐。

在制定计划前, 无论是老师还是学生都应对所采用的报刊作充分了解, 对自己的现有英语知识和技能充分认识, 掌握一定阅读技能并能运用正确的阅读方法开展阅读。在此基础上, 制定详尽的、符合班级和个体实际的班级、小组和个人计划。

1.做好制定计划前的准备工作。首先, 了解报刊的版面结构。刊登在不同版面的文章内容和题材不同, 所使用的阅读方法也有所不同。学生对何种题材的文章感兴趣, 也决定他们对报刊版面文章的阅读顺序。《21st Century》 (《二十一世纪学生英文报》) 初中版含有时事频道、青春校园、奇妙世界、乐学地带、测试天地、快乐阅读板块。其中测试天地版面为阅读练习题, 其余版面内容呈现不同领域的精彩内容, 能满足学生不同兴趣的阅读需求。

教师应该对学生进行阅读方法的指导。不同题材和体裁的文章应采用不同的阅读方法和阅读技巧, 教师应指导学生在阅读过程中不断运用和实践, 使学生在加强阅读理解能力的同时, 扩大词汇量的积累。

另外要明确阅读任务。《21st Century》 (《二十一世纪学生英文报》) 初中版为周报, 要求学生每周完成一期报纸的阅读, 完成测试天地板块的对应练习, 把生词整理到生词库, 并摘抄美文、美句。

2.制定切实可行的各个层面的计划。学生要针对自己的具体学习情况制定适合自己实际的阅读计划, 以周为时间单位, 灵活安排报刊阅读时间, 个人计划的实施通过自我监督、小组成员间的互相监督、教师检查等方式来推进实施。

教师根据班级情况把班级分成若干学习小组以实现学生之间的互动及影响, 充分发挥学生的自主性。同时鼓励组内成员间用英语互动和交流, 创设良好的英语学习环境。分好学习小组后, 学习小组制定小组阅读计划。教师制定教学计划、活动计划和成果展示计划。

三、关注和重视阅读过程

1.精讲经典文章。在每周的阅读文章中挑选一到两篇进行精讲, 精讲的文章一般为贴近学生生活的、新发行的动漫影片介绍、国内外歌手的新歌或新专辑介绍、体育明星的介绍等。这些文章的话题是大部分学生感兴趣的, 因此, 充分利用好这些文章对提高学生的英语学习兴趣和英语能力有很大的促进作用。

在上课前, 教师充分利用网络资源, 搜集与文章有关的音视频材料, 充分了解学生的兴趣点, 精心备课。例如, 初二版第43期第一版介绍了即将新映的电影“The Little Price”, 教师在网络上下载了该片的新片预告片, 并请读过该书的同学在班级进行故事概述, 让学生对这部影片有个大概的了解。在此基础上, 展示同名原著中第一章开头的两幅图片, 让学生猜测“我”画的是什么, 没有读过这本书的同学很难猜出“被蟒蛇吞下肚子里的大象”。当揭秘两幅画所表达的真实内容, 学生感到不可思议的同时, 不由地对原著产生了浓厚的兴趣。这时候再来阅读报刊上的文章, 学生的好奇心和探知欲就会被充分调动起来, 会自觉地、专注地投入阅读, 去探索“我”究竟是怎么样的人, 将会有什么样的经历。“兴趣是最好的老师”, 一旦学生的好奇心和求知欲被调动起来, 阅读课的任务就能轻松地完成。另外还会带来意想不到的副产品。上完这节阅读课后, 学生的胃口被调动起来, 大多数的学生会去看这部英文电影, 三分之一到一半的同学会去阅读英文原著。这个时候教师可以起到推波助澜的作用, 鼓励学生写观后感、读后感, 并在小组及班级内进行交流, 并且可以在英语活动中采用电影配音、原文朗诵等形式来为学生搭建展示运用英语的平台, 使学生真正做到学以致用, 这样报刊阅读就从课堂的阅读课延伸到课堂外, 由一篇文章延伸到原著的阅读和原版电影的观看, 由文本延伸到音频、视频。

2.重视阅读细节。对于课后阅读文章, 学生自己记录阅读时间, 运用正确的阅读方法, 认真完成课后阅读题目。并在阅读过程中查阅一定量的生词, 对于这些词的读音、词性、搭配及例句做好笔记, 并整理到生词库中。在阅读过程中摘抄美文、美句, 提高鉴赏力。这个过程使学生既提高了学生的阅读理解能力, 又扩大了词汇量, 并能对所查阅的生词达到识记和初步运用。

四、采用激励为主的评价方式

在学习过程当中, 学生的学习自觉性起主导作用。与此同时, 适当的评价手段起督促作用。在充分发挥学生的主观能动性的同时, 鼓励和推动了学生养成良好的学习习惯、严格执行学习计划的自控力;合适的评价方式使自觉、优秀的孩子得到表扬, 使学习能力薄弱的学生得到督促和鼓励。同时, 也让所有的同学保持英语学习的兴趣, 增强英语学习的信心。

在阅读过程中, 学生的个人计划完成情况每周要在学习小组内呈现, 学习小组对每个成员的任务完成情况进行检查并加以记录。检查的方法采用自评和组内互评的方式, 小组之间采用组间互评。通过多方面的、多手段的评价方式, 学生在自评和互评过程中能够反思自己在学习过程中的长处和不足, 同时学习别人的优点, 并能不断地调控自己的学习计划, 完善自己的学习方法和学习习惯。

阅读任务结束后, 学习小组推出组内优秀生词库、优秀读书笔记、优秀读后感, 并在班内进行展览, 然后班级内评出优胜奖并加以鼓励和表扬。同时鼓励学生励学生用英文创作并积极向报刊杂志投稿, 指导和帮助学生创办英文小报。班级内用壁报和海报的形式来展现学生的阅读成果, 激励学生的创作热情, 从而使学生的学习态度由被动转为主动, 对英语的喜爱由衷而生, 为学生的终身学习起到了巨大的推动作用。

五、反馈和反思

1.由于初中生的知识和认知水平存在很大的个体差异, 所以在指导学生制定个人计划时, 要求学生根据自己的实际学习情况和能力, 允许学生制定出切合实际的可执行的计划。在分配学习小组成员时, 也要兼顾到不同层次和水平的学生, 力求做到既能发挥各小组成员的主观能动性, 又能调动学生之间的互帮互助精神。

2.在指导课外阅读的过程中, 笔者一度过度强调阅读的重要性而忽略了学生的创造力。所幸的是, 笔者即时认识到这一点并加以调整, 鼓励学习在阅读过程中欣赏英语的美, 在创作和运用英语的过程中感受英语的美。鼓励学生学以致用, 大胆向英文报刊和杂志投稿、积极参加各级英语活动。几年的教学实践中, 多名学生在全国及省市英语演讲比赛、作文比赛中及电视大赛等活动中取得骄人成绩。

3.在报刊阅读的教学中, 笔者也有过纠结矛盾的心理:课外阅读是否会挤占学生学习课本知识的时间, 从而导致考试成绩的下降?几年的实践证明, 由于重视和加强课外阅读, 在考试中, 学生在基础知识的掌握和运用、阅读理解能力和写作能力方面都有很好的表现。可见, 课外阅读补充和拓展了学生的课内知识、发展学生的英语思维, 课本知识和课外知识相互补充、相得益彰。这也更坚定了笔者在今后的教学中注重课外阅读的决心。
