My Feelings after reading Wuthering Heights

Wuthering Heights is a well-written tragedy of love. After reading the whole story, I would like to talk about the main characters of the story―Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff. Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff love each other very much, but they do not have the right attitude towards love, which leads to the tragedy.

In Catherine’s life, she made a very foolish decision---marrying to Edgar. In fact, her love for Edgar can never be compared to that for Heathcliff. She did so, because she thought the wealth of Edgar would be useful to Heathcliff. But in reality, it did not work. She did not have a good understanding of love, which is something pure and saint. If anyone add any purpose into love, love itself lost its meaning. Catherine’s wrong decision hurt two people who love her, and even destroyed the happiness of their offspring.

Heathcliff is a man full of retaliation. He loved Catherine very much, but what he did, on the contrary, added to the misery of Catherine. In my opinion, if he really loved Catherine, he should not walk into Catherine’s life again after his disappearance. Further more, after the death of Catherine, what Heathcliff did brought agony to Catherine’s daughter, as well as his own son.

由于诸多杂事的牵扯,这部书竟断续花费了几个月时间才得以读毕。合上最后一页,凝神回味,心中首先浮起的是一种奇异之感:那就是它在某些方面有点近似(当然绝非等同于)早些时候读过的“新派”武侠小说。

并非有意随俗哗众以吸引视听——前些年,某文学博士与出版商联手为“二十世纪中国文学大师”排座次,将香港新武侠小说写家金庸列入,结果遭致众多正直严肃饱学之士的迎头痛击——前车之鉴,个中利害我自然不会不知。上述奇异之感不过是指相对于新武侠情节编排的雷同或程式化,人物性格的扁平与类型化(呈弱智、幼儿状态),以牵强的巧合误会造就惊天动地的生死恩仇等等而言,《呼啸山庄》的情节营造亦显粗疏幼稚,让人难以置信,其人物的性格行为亦乖戾反常、狂躁偏执(大抵是任情绪驱使而不顾后果),起落跌宕的情节转捩后面,人为的痕迹亦明显可见——

类似上述经不住稍微认真推敲的情节安排、人物性格言行表露及相关细节选择,无须说还可以寻觅列举出若干——假如以正宗写实主义的基本标准与规则去考量作者及作品,那么一部《呼啸山庄》恐怕注定难逃诸如情节虚幻离奇、有违生活常理人物常态之类的指斥。事实上,如果愿去作一点考证挖掘及联想,我们还能为这种指斥找到若干合理的解释和依据。

如所周知,著名的勃朗特三姊妹降生于一个贫穷的乡村牧师家庭,因收入微薄,这一家子的经济状况相当拮据,连维持起码的生计都很困难。加之她们家居豪渥斯地区一处偏僻的旷野,并且从未离开过,称得上是终生离群索居,没有条件做一点起码的交游与旅行。也就是说,当时的艾米莉(还有她的姐姐夏洛蒂与妹妹安)不仅不可能获取比一般人更广阔的生活视野、更丰富的人生经验,而且跟当时的绝大多数女性一样,连个人的感情生活也受到法律和社会习俗的严格限制,因此其作品中生活场景的狭隘、人物思想情感的理念化(借用毛姆的说法,这“不是属于尘世的情绪”)及性格处理的简单主观几乎是必然的。更何况金无足赤,以苛刻的眼光看,任何小说(即便是最伟大的小说)也难免有某—方面(或几方面)的局限或缺失。问题在于,像这样一部局限与缺陷都非常明显的作品为何具有如此的震撼力?在某种程度上我更倾向于认为,优秀乃至一般化的作品往往不一定能挑出特别明显的毛病,而真正伟大的作品反而可能优缺点都相当突出(天才大多是偏激者或执拗者),但与此同时一定会独秉有某种超绝卓异、世所罕见、不可取代和重复的特征与品性,闪射出(或内蕴着)稀世之珍不同凡俗的炫目光芒(不妨回想品味一下果戈里、陀思妥耶夫斯基、爱伦·坡、卡夫卡,乃至鲁迅等人的杰作)。

基于上述立论,我们认定《呼啸山庄》正是一枚足以承载如是赞誉的稀世之珍。尤为费解的是,它的创造者竟是一位终生困居旷野僻地、因贫病交加仅活了短短三十个年头的乡村女子!对此,种种貌似充足的理由或解析恐怕都难以叫人真正心悦诚服,无可奈何之际,最终只能归之为造物(同时也是作为万物灵长的人类自身)的神奇与神秘了。

二、“歌唱家”或“诗人”的小说

以常规标准度量,人生经验欠缺与生活视野狭窄乃是被视为人生、人性勘探记录者的作家的致命缺陷,然而艾米莉并未因此而畏葸局促。面对存在(自然环境、人类情感/命运),她以罕见的天才力量和创造激情注入了如此盎然充沛的生气,使得其中和我们日常所见的人类如此不同、差距如此巨大的男女角色生动可感呼之欲出,就像施加了神秘难解的魔法一样。

这里的所谓生动可感,并不取决于它们跟人所熟稔的实存世界的相似程度,也无须以它们是否可能在日常现实中存在为基础,而是源自它们自身(作为以生命、情感为根基的文学创造物)的可信性与魅惑力。恰如爱·摩·福斯特所言:有一种作品你无法做到使它既感人又真实,设若小说家身上有着过于强大的歌唱家或诗人的质素,而弹丸之地的小说厅堂又无引吭高歌的余地,那么他就只好敲桌击椅以至非把家具弄坏不可。福斯特素以博识幽默著称,这段话自然不止是逗趣取乐以博人一粲,而是大有深意存焉。试看另一位英国女作家简·奥斯汀(她生活与创作的年代稍早于艾米莉),她以同样贫乏的生活经验(只限于中产阶级的客厅场景)写出了《爱玛》、《傲慢与偏见》等多部杰作,但其作品的风格却迥异于艾米莉,几乎称得上天差地别——前者以敏锐细密的感觉忠实地观察和摹写人物性格,分析情感心理,洞烛幽微,客观精当,丝丝入扣;后者则是以奇崛非凡的气度、夸张浓烈的笔触渲染构建出一个虚拟世界,其自然景观的荒蛮旷茫和与世隔绝、人物言行的执迷极端与性格的专横僻异都是出人意表超乎寻常的。从希氏同凯瑟琳铭心刻骨的生死恋情,到手段酷虐到近乎疯狂的复仇行为(最让人不寒而栗的是,除了对庄园财产的攫取外,他竟然将主要的复仇目标放在对仇人后代的蓄意折磨乃至人格类型的改造重塑上),种种人间恩怨情仇的酿成,个中根由既缘自价值取向的差异、性格的极端相左,同时也缘自人与人之间沟通理解的错位,还有人心深处的顽劣阴暗怨毒怪戾——不可思议的是其间各色人物行为情感的相互抵牾、吸引、搏战,无论深广度还是恣肆放纵度,似乎都远远超逾了人类通常可能的极限,予读者以似真非真的虚幻感。

说了这么多,我想表达的意思是:对《呼啸山庄》这部“最奇特的小说”而言,生活或者事实的“真实”并不那么重要,艾米莉一心关注的是将故事(人物命运)逐次推向早经设定的结局。进一步,就读者自阅读获取的直观感受和最终理解看,其中构成作品主体的人物、事件的过程与结局(包括最难理清评判的情感纠葛),也不过是一个载体而已——环围涌动在几十万混沌粗粝之言后面的是一派雷电交加、风急雨骤的狂乱轰鸣,作为一个基本声部的人物性格、命运、行为、情感(尤其是爱与恨的交战)的演进,常常被淹没在震彻寰宇的交响里,并延展趋向至无穷的不可知之境。对此,另一位晚她三十多年出生的同胞、著名女作家弗·伍尔夫曾精当地指出:“《呼啸山庄》是一部比《简爱》更难懂的书,因为艾米莉是—位比夏洛蒂更伟大的诗人。”“当夏洛蒂写作时,她以雄辩、光彩和热情说‘我爱’、‘我恨’、‘我受苦’。她的经验,虽然比较强烈,却是和我们自己的经验在同一水平上。”艾米莉却是“被某些比较普遍的观念所激励,促使她创作的冲动并不是她自己的受苦或她自身遭受的伤害。她看到一个四分五裂、混乱无序的世界,并感到她本身有能力在一部书中把它合为一体……这场斗争的目的是通过她的人物之口来诉说某种东西,但不仅仅是‘我爱’、‘我恨’,而且是‘我们、整个人类’和‘你们,永恒的力量’……正是对于这种潜伏于人类本性的幻象之下的力量升华到崇高境界的暗示,使这部书在其它小说中显得出类拔萃,形象宏伟”。

据小说开篇时的解释,这是“一个意味深长的内地形容词”,描绘的是这地方在风暴的天气里所受的气压骚动。身为某种预言(非寓言)或象征的承载者,“呼啸(Wuthering)”这个词的选用堪称传神(当然还得力于老翻译家杨苡先生的创造性翻译),我们在此至少可以谈及以下两点——

A.声音。《呼啸山庄》中自始至终充满了声响,其间有暴风雨的嚎叫、雷电撼天动地的轰鸣、人物的内心独白或喃喃自语、更有目眦皆裂的詈骂与歇斯底里的咆哮……作为人物性格情感(爱与恨)延伸、宣泄与强化的主要方式(渠道),声音的重要性甚至已经超逾了通常的背景作用,进而构成了小说主体的一部分。

B.强度或烈度。著名英国作家毛姆曾将《呼啸山庄》列为世界十佳小说之一,并宣称:“我不知道还有哪一部小说中爱情的痛苦、迷恋、残酷、执著曾经被如此令人吃惊地描述出来。”事实上不止是爱情,还有历久弥深的刻骨仇恨、匪夷所思的恶习怪癖,以及几乎所有人物(除了房客洛克乌德先生和山庄女管家丁耐莉)都偏执简单武断得有弱智之嫌的判断能力、行为动机,在作品中无一不是表现得“令人吃惊”。

稍作回想,我们或许都曾耳闻、亲见或通过其他方式知晓,生长于不同地域的人类因天性的相左相异(或鲁钝、或聪慧、或刚烈、或倔强、或柔顺等)而导致做人行事(特别是在本能性应对突然变故时)准则与模式大相径庭的报道,不同秉赋品性的造成跟不同人文自然生态的长期熏染是紧密相关的——对此,“一方水土养一方人”这句熟语不失为一个精当的概括。以《呼啸山庄》为例,从其中的萧恩兄妹、希刺克厉夫、伊莎贝拉、林淳、老仆人约瑟夫到他们的创造者:现实中的艾米莉本人,他们都在不同程度上以各自独有的方式验证了这一点。

四、文学中远去的天才年代

我曾经在别一篇文字里写道;天才并非大师巨匠的同义语,真正的绝世天才的创造过程往往是短促的——他们不是在猛烈的燃烧里过快地耗尽了自己(早夭、疯癫、一开始即达到最高点),就是在与生俱来的生理与心理疾患(怀疑、焦虑、忧郁)中将生命缓慢地磨蚀殆尽。
