1971年越南战争期间，苏兹贝格决定刊登美国国防部的秘密报告，使时任总统尼克松政府陷入窘境。尼克松以国家安全为名，要求《纽约时报》停止发布相关新闻，但《纽约时报》引用《美国宪法》第一修正案，拒绝妥协并与美国政府对簿公堂，最终胜诉。苏兹贝格之后在回忆录中说，他废寝忘餐读完五角大楼文件，深知“民美国民众有知情权”。

另一诉讼的起源在苏兹贝格担任出版人之前。1960年，苏兹贝格为支持黑人民权领袖马丁·路德·金，为他在《纽约时报》上刊登了广告，谴责南部地区对这一运动的镇压。公共事务专员沙利文认为这是诽谤，提起诉讼。1964年，这起官司以《纽约时报》胜诉终结。

不仅如此，他还是一个成功的发行人。1963年，他新官上任，为了扭亏为盈，他做出了史无前例的决定，裁减了多达5400名员工，而对广告部则多方招揽人才，使广告收入大幅增加，从而使《纽约报时》的财力大增，编辑记者的薪酬迅速提高，报纸的质量明显改善。就这样，《纽约时报》由一份地方报纸变成了世界大报。
