河北省高等学校“世纪之星”英语演讲大赛高职高专组的决赛是河北省教育厅和河北省高等学校外语教学研究会联合举办的全省英语演讲赛事, 旨在“提高高职学生英语交际能力, 并为高职英语教育领域的专家、教师和管理者搭建一个探索英语教学改革、交流英语教学经验的平台。”作为亲临“世纪之星”决赛现场的指导教师我感受强烈、感悟颇多。

一、演讲比赛反映出的教学问题

英语演讲比赛就如同一面客观清晰的镜子, 透过它参赛学生能看到自己的优势和不足, 英语教师也能发现自己在教学中存在的问题和有待改进的地方。

1. 演讲比赛中显示出的学生英语学习存在的问题有:

(1) 学生当众表达缺乏自信心。高考英语降分之前, 高中英语教学基本以应试为主, 尤其是偏远地区, 长期忽视了学生英语表达交际能力。由于长期缺乏口语锻炼, 加之多数来自农村的高职生在中小学期间的发音很不标准, 相对本科生自卑感较强, 导致高职学生英语课堂凭借不愿或者不敢开口讲英语的惯性而进入“缺乏自信心一不开口说英语—缺乏自信心”的恶性循环。

(2) 交际能力不足。高职高专学生学习英语主要的动力为“不过英语三级A或B不让毕业”和“就业单位青睐四六级证书”。他们更愿注重的是英语读写能力, 平时爱做英语过级模拟题。高职英语教师的“素质教育”对于被迫忙于“应试”的高职生来说只能是一厢情愿。因为没有英语语言环境, 同学之间罕用英语交流, 高职英语口语一直处于被忽视的状态。

(3) 思辨缺席。高职高专生学历低, 为了求职疲于应付各级各类证书以及自考、专接本等各种考试, 拼命寻求理解的标准性和答案的惟一性, 妨碍了学习在具体情境中广泛而灵活的迁移, 导致他们缺乏独立自主的思维和判断能力, 其发散性思维、逆向思维被束缚, 从而造成他们英语演讲比赛中的“思辨缺席”。

(4) 知识面狭窄。纵观历年高职高专“世纪之星”演讲决赛, 很多高水平的演讲者和演讲赛冠军选手之所以能够在演讲中纵横捭阖, 对各种知识和语料信手拈来, 许多并非是英语专业学生.此中有真意, 博览即谜底!这种现象就提示我们, 广泛阅读是演讲的必修课。阅读是培养思维的有效手段, 而从阅读当中找到思维的活跃点对于演讲来说是非常重要的。英专选手往往言之有度易, 言之有物难!在“世纪之星”演讲初复赛的提问环节中严重表现出大部分的参赛选手的知识面极为狭窄。许多学生只专心干本专业的学习完全忽略了社会、历史、哲学等学科的知识, 甚至在日常生活中都没有阅读报刊杂志的习惯, 更不用说去涉猎有关的英语新闻了。

2. 演讲比赛也折射出大学英语教学的诸多不足:

(1) 传统的“填鸭式”教学模式导致学生不会主动去思考问题, 而只是被动地接收。英语教师教学内容不能与时俱进, 学生缺乏兴趣, 英语课堂教学缺乏师生互动、学生互动。

(2) 英语等级考试仍是评价英语教师教学效果和学生英语水平的主要依据, 甚至有些院校对于获奖的学生及指导教师并不重视。对其用智慧和汗水换来的光荣, 既无物质上的奖励, 也没精神上的鼓励。获奖师生的大赛证书并不与其年终考核或综合测评并不挂钩。

(3) 有些外语教师过于倚重知识点的讲解, 注重“教”的传授过程, 忽视“学”的认知过程;或对网络多媒体技术过于依赖, 将“人灌”变为“电灌”, Power Point既无power也无point, 很难培养出能够适应世界经济全球化的真正具有英语交际能力的人才。以讲授为主的传统英语课堂教学模式只重知识而轻能力, 使得高职英语教学陷入了教师教得苦、学生学得累、学生英语应用能力差的困境。

(4) 目前中国英语教学的一个最重要的问题, 就是老师口语、听力不行, 因此很多老师倾向于语法和阅读教学, 而忽视了口语和听力。更可怕的是, 高职英语教师即使在英语口语上不想误人子弟而进修深造, 多半也已过英语口语习得的黄金期, 如何克服语言的石化, 练就一口流利、地道的英语口语驾驭课堂, 也是一大难题。

二、面向职场口语的英语教改方向

高职高专实用英语口语大赛内容包括三个部分:职场陈述、图表描述和情景交流。其中“情景交流”最为关键, 进入省决赛而未能荣获二等奖以上的选手大败于此。情景交流即参赛者抽取一个场景题目, 根据题目的要求扮演其中的一个角色, 与外籍主试官进行一对一的现场问答式交流。由此可见, 情景语境自始至终都贯穿于英语演讲中, 对于考察学生的英语综合运用能力起到重要作用。单纯讲授英语, 并不能保证学生将来能称职地完成用英语进行演讲的任务。布卢姆指出:“成功的外语课堂教学应在课内创设更多情景, 让学生有机会运用自己所学的语言材料。”为此, 高职英语教师应该以“真实”铸就口语课堂之魂。为了改变高职学生在跨文化交流中“接受有余, 输出不足”的现状, 实现“鲜活交际”这一口语教学的基本使命, 英语教师应该精选各类情景真实的语料, 融入大量的语用风格, 结合各行各业地道“行话”, 创设或模拟真实演讲语境, 打造英语课堂上的“真枪实弹演习”, 让学生身临其境, 自然地进入鲜活口语交流, 改变以往仅靠背句子的填鸭式交际口语教学, 有效地实现从真实输入到鲜活输出的转化。

三、结语

高职的学生参加英语口语技能大赛, 与其说是学生赛场的竞技与角逐, 毋宁说是英语指导教师教学的交流与博弈, 乃至高职院校英语教学风格的PK与切磋。高职高专英语教师应该以全国高职高专实用英语大赛为参照, 不断提高自身英语专业素质, 创新英语教学模式, 激发学生学习英语的兴趣, 多种渠道提升学生英语口语输出能力。

演讲的力量从古至今都是能够使人怦然心动的强大力量,它是一种重要的表达思想与达成目标的手段。国际演讲大师Stephen.E.Lucas认为公共演讲是一种将人的思想公之于众的方法,即一种与他人分享观点并影响他人的途径。自2002年起,我国每年举办一次由中央电视台和外语教学与研究出版社联合主办的“外研社杯”(原名“CCTV杯”)全国英语演讲大赛,迄今为止12年中,该赛事为国家外事交流、国际教育、科技政治等方面的进步选拔除了大批优秀的英语人才。他们精神矍铄,舌灿莲花,英语华丽,思辨突出。该赛事最具挑战性以及最能体现选手能力的部分便是即兴演讲环节。无可辩驳的是,英语即兴演讲正在潜移默化中推动学生进步,带动人们观念改变,深刻影响年轻一代的价值观念。

即兴演讲是最考察选手英语功底和思维敏捷度的环节。选手根据大赛组委会给出的一道命题(图片、视频、名言警句、文学介绍等)即席作出一段2分钟左右的演讲。在短暂的准备过程中演讲者不能像准备定题演讲一样广泛细致地搜集材料,而且也没有充分的时间精挑细选,基本上组织内容全仰照选手们的个人功底和文化素养。即兴赛题很大程度上考察选手对各国、各领域文化知识的领会和见解以及举一反三的能力。选手们作出的即兴演讲都是带有个人特征的分析和思考过后的慷慨陈词。文化因素寓于其中,是对知识的实践。在实践中发表看法,交流思想。

“外研社杯”全国英语演讲大赛的即兴演讲时间一般为三分钟,比赛形式主要有个人陈述(3分钟)、小组即兴演讲(3人一组)以及车轮战辩论。在较为段短暂的时间中,能够完整、清晰的阐释自己的观点已属不易,但优秀的选手往往能够通过自己的表达将思想世界公之于众,用思辨和文化的魅力征服评委,征服观众,也征服自己。纵观往届折桂的优秀选手,他们都有一个共同点:不光英语华丽突出,重要的是思想光芒万丈,独树一帜。在冗繁而具有深度的命题中将人们引入自己的内心世界。他们不光有缜密的逻辑、独特的视角,更重要的是无论他们是哪个专业种类的学生,都具有深厚的文化底蕴和文学素养。

针对同一文化因素演讲的另一种形式是选手引用同一名人翘楚的名言,将有利于选题的词句作为利器武装思想,为演讲增色。

一、“输出驱动假设”与英语演讲比赛培训

英语演讲涉及输入与输出两个关键环节。基于Swain的“语言输出”假说,我们获知:二语习得者的语言输出对于他们在运用语言过程中的流利性和准确性具有一定的促进作用。二语习得者的成功之处在于:具有大量的可理解性输入和能够有效地进行可理解性输出。Swain强调,“学生没有表现出本族语者的产出能力,不是因为他们的可理解性输入不够,而是因为他们的可理解性输出有限。这种局限性体现在两方面:1.没有给学生足够的在课堂环境下使用目标语的机会;2.学生的语言输出能力没有得到有力的推动(刺激)”。[1]输入与输出的和谐统一,不但可以提升学生的英语实际应用能力,而且可以更有效地促进学生消化和吸收大量的可理解性输入,从而可以取得优秀的演讲培训效果和提高演讲培训质量。

二、培养策略

(一)通过经典演讲,使学生学习和模仿优秀演讲

在英语演讲比赛培训班,教师可以向学生详细介绍并且播放类型各异的经典演讲。如竞赛演讲,即在“外研社杯”全国大学生英语演讲大赛中获得特等奖、一等奖的竞赛选手的演讲;名人演讲,即中外名人的英语演讲,如杨澜、马丁•路得•金、美国前国务卿黑格和基辛格、美国前总统卡特、英国前首相撒切尔、美国总统奥巴马、乔布斯等。这样能促使学生领略英语演讲的魅力,体会演讲风格的多样性和演讲语言的多层次性。总之,经典演讲可以使学生获得更开阔的视野,培养和强化英语演讲兴趣。观看经典演讲后,教师应对不同类型的演讲进行有针对性的点评,帮助学生从经典演讲中学习一些基本的和重要的演讲技巧,例如,选择话题和目标、分析听众、论证观点、组织演讲主体、撰写演讲开篇与结尾、撰写演讲提纲、运用语言、演讲表达、巧用视觉辅助物等等。此外,教师还应严格要求学生认真模仿经典演讲,从经典演讲者的声音(包括音量、音高、语速、停顿、抑扬顿挫、发音和吐字)和肢体语言(包括个人仪表、眼神交流、手势和身体动作)两方面进行模仿,从而使学生在模仿中学习和领会英语演讲的重要方法,感受英语演讲的魅力。总之,学生通过经典演讲学习和模仿优秀演讲的过程,就是进行“输入”的过程,从而为下一步的有效“输出”奠定扎实的基础。

经过观看和模仿经典演讲,学生心中的成就感和自信心会油然而生,同时,经典演讲会激发学生亲自体验演讲的动机。因此,教师可通过鲜明主题组织学生进行演讲实践。具体步骤如下:首先,明确鲜明主题,所谓鲜明主题是指具有一定时代特色或与当前社会时事热点密切相关的主题,例如,有关社会主义核心价值观的主题(包括富强、民主、文明、和谐、自由、平等、公正、法治、爱国、敬业、诚信、友善)、社会时事热点主题(包括科技、创新、环保、互联网+、自主创业、逆境成长、老龄化社会、共享经济、教育、文化、道德、美德、人生或生活、就业等等)。其次,提前布置主题任务,每次实践演讲前,提前一周告知学生演讲主题,要求学生根据所给主题收集相关资料,甚至要求学生基于所给主题自拟题目,提前撰写演讲稿。该环节可以使学生充分准备演讲内容,建立一定的自信心,促使学生踊跃“输出”——大胆表达个人心中所想,从而有利于营造轻松和谐的英语演讲实践氛围。最后,针对每个主题,组织学生进行两次实践演讲,帮助学生全面掌握和巩固每个主题的具体演讲。总之,通过具有特色的主题式演讲实践,一方面可以让学生在实践中进一步学习和使用各种基本的和重要的演讲技巧,另一方面可以使学生得到系统性的、条理性的和全面性的演讲实践。总而言之,学生通过鲜明主题进行英语演讲实践可以达到以下目标:在演讲培训环境下进行大量的演讲实践,不断将“输入”有效地转化为“输出”;逐渐培养和强化在演讲中的语言输出能力,从而提升英语实际应用能力。

“外研社杯”全国大学生英语演讲大赛包含两个环节:定题演讲环节(3分钟)和问答环节(2分钟)。因此,每次实践演讲后,教师应从以上两个环节对学生进行全面细致的点评。首先,定题演讲环节,对于该环节,教师应从以下几个方面进行细心点评:

1.审题

比赛的演讲题目往往变幻莫测,在实践中,要分析学生在审题中是否能够完全正确理解题目涵义和是否把握题目重点。

2.个体观点

在比赛中,演讲题目往往属于广泛型的题目,即演讲者可以从各种不同的角度展开演讲的题目。对于此类大范围的题目,实践后教师应当分析学生的个人观点是否与演讲题目一致和是否具有一定的新颖性、恰当性、清晰性。

3.论证观点

论证观点是整个实际演讲过程的核心部分,因此,实践演讲后,教师应针对该中心部分进行非常精心的点评,具体包括两个方面:分论点和事例。首先,分论点:分论点的句子结构是否具有一致性和恰当性;分论点的内容是否能够充分支撑个人观点;能否对分论点展开准确、充分和恰当的论述;学生对每个分论点展开论述后,能否把每个分论点与个人观点紧密结合起来进行紧扣中心观点的论述。其次,事例:所运用的事例是否具有相当的恰当性;事例的描述是否能够准确地、充分地论证个人观点。总之,分论点和事例两者都决定了整个演讲是否具有充实的内容和是否具有强大的说服力,因此,教师应对学生演讲中的分论点和事例进行精心点评。

4.演讲的逻辑性和层次性

演讲的逻辑性和层次性关乎演讲内容是否具有条理性,更关乎大赛评委能否快速地、更好地理解整篇演讲内容,如果演讲内容缺乏一定的逻辑性和层次性,大赛评委在听的过程中很难跟上演讲选手的节奏与思路,从而导致评委们容易出现注意力不集中的现象。

5.语言正确性

语言正确性主要是指学生在实践演讲中所运用的英语句子的语法是否正确。这就要求教师在培训中要认真听学生的演讲并且快速记录学生演讲时所出现的语法错误,点评时要耐心、细致地指出学生的语法错误之处,并且告诉学生正确的语法知识,严格要求学生认真进行现场记录,同时要求学生在平时的英语练习中有意识地使用正确的语法知识,避免下次演讲实践时出现类似的语法错误。其次,问答环节:在演讲比赛中,评委会针对选手的演讲内容进行灵活提问,选手们要回答各种各样的问题。因此,教师应从以下几个步骤培训选手进行沉着应答。第一步,快速判断问题类型:包括特殊疑问句、一般疑问句、陈述句等等。根据不同的问题类型,指导学生采取不同的应答方式。第二步,明确表明个人观点。第三步,对个人观点从why(为什么)和how(如何)两个方面展开详细论述,在论述中注意紧扣在前面定题演讲环节中的个人观点。以上步骤既可以帮助选手避免出现答非所问的问题,又可以使得评委快速知道选手对所提问题所持观点,从而进一步感受选手对观点的论述能力。总之,以上步骤能够使得学生高效地把“输入”转化为“输出”,最终有效地培养与提高学生的应答能力、语言组织能力和逻辑思维能力,进而提升学生的英语综合实际应用能力。

三、英语演讲比赛培训效果

笔者在历年的英语演讲比赛培训班中按照上述3个策略对学生进行了认真培训,经过师生共同努力,本院学生在比赛中均获得了较好的成绩,曾经荣获“外研社杯”全国大学生英语演讲大赛(广西赛区)一、二、三等奖。良好的参赛成绩证明了英语演讲比赛培训的良好效果。首先,通过系统的演讲培训,学生可以增强个人的语言表达能力、开拓个人演讲思路、建立与增强个人自信心、培养和强化个人沟通能力,从而促使个人可以符合充满竞争的现代社会对高素质人才的需求:具备较强的语言沟通能力、合作精神和高效率工作的能力。其次,在全面的演讲培训中,学生能够很好地培养个人的交流能力、演讲能力和论辩能力,而这些能力可以促使学生不断培养和增强个人的逻辑推理能力、言辞表达能力和哲理思辨能力。总而言之,英语演讲比赛培训能够不断地培养和提高学生的思辨能力,帮助学生成为创新人才,帮助学生与具有不同文化背景的人进行轻松自如的沟通。

四、结语

英语演讲比赛培训不但可以帮助学生获取各种各样的足够的可理解性“输入”,从而使学生在实践性演讲中能够做到有效地可理解性“输出”,而且可以帮助学生在反复的“输入”—“输出”环节中锻炼个人的逻辑推理能力、言辞表达能力和哲理思辨能力,从而培养和提高学生的表达能力和沟通能力,促使学生有效地增强英语综合应用能力,更好地适应现代社会对高职应用型和复合型人才的需求。
