Avoiding Your True Power

Afraid To Meditate

There are times when we feel the pull to meditate but are swayed from it by the excuses that spring to mind. We may think that we are too busy, have no time to ourselves, or that we do not have the right place to meditate. Our minds can think of dozens of reasons to put off meditation. But those are even stronger reasons to look past the illusion of the hustle and bustle of daily life and to connect to the place within that intersects with the timeless power and limitless potential of the universe. From that place we can experience that potent stillness that exists at all times, and it is only as far as away as our breath.

It might be useful to ask yourself why you would put off something so beneficial to your peace of mind and general well-being. There may be fear that if you were to stop your frantic pace, your world might fall apart, and then you would have to face the undeniable reality of who you really are and the results of the choices you have made. You might be afraid that you will be forced to make huge changes in order to align yourself with the universe and harness your true potential. Sometimes the frustrations of the known world seem less scary than the possibilities of the unknown. But the truth is that when we cooperate with the universe by creating our lives from the truth of our being, life becomes less of a struggle and more of a process of living blissfully on purpose.

Finding yourself alone for a few moments can give you the opportunity to turn within to infuse a sense of calm wisdom to your work. Whenever you can take the time to recenter and refocus, it will remind you how beneficial it is to connect to your source. Then you will make the time for longer sojourns of spirit, because once you are rejuvenated and enlivened by knowing that you are made of energy and light, you can channel the power to create your life in alignment with the highest potential of your soul.

The past years have witnessed a mounting number of Chinese scholars returning from overseas. As is lively illustrated by the column chart, the number of returnees climbed from a mere 69.3 thousand in to over 272.9 thousand in , at an annual increase rate of around 50%.

A multitude of factors may have led to the tendency revealed by the chart, but the following are the critical ones from my perspective. First and foremost, along with the development of Chinese economy and society, the number of Chinese studying abroad has been soaring in the past years, which has provided an expanding base for the number of returnees. In the second place, the government has enacted a series of preferential policies to attract overseas Chinese scholars back home. Last but not least, the booming economy, science and technology in this country have generated more attative job opportunites for scholars returning from overseas.

The waves of returnees will definitely contribute to this nation’s development, since they have brought back not only advanced science and technology but also pioneering concepts of education and management. With more scholars coming back from overseas, and with the concerted efforts of the whole nation, we have reasons to expect a faster rejuvenation of this country.

This is a satiric but true-to-life drawing. As we can see in it, a man is drowning, with only one arm above water gesturing for help. Those standing on the bank, however, instead of lending a helping hand, are busy photographing with their mobile phones, most possibly taking the scene as another eyeball-attractor on the Internet.

Exaggerating as it might be, the phenomenon mirrored by the cartoon is not uncommon in modern society. Actually, both the picture and instances in real life point to the fact that many people nowadays ignore what they should do due to the use of mobile phones and the Internet. It never too rare to see some people taking pictures of newly served dishes in a restaurant and upload them to their friend circle in We Chat. Nor is it to find people busy taking photos and update their micro blogs when touring. Some even fail to take proper actions in case of emergency, just as the crowd in the picture do. Their only goal seems to be attracting as much attention online as possible.

Such being the case, it is high time that we pondered over the problem and figured out a solution. Among all measures, I believe, the central one should be resisting the temptation of vanity brought along by such modern self-media as micro blog, and coming more back to life itself.

Is It Up to Students to Evaluate Teachers?

The past few years have witnessed a mounting number of universities allowing students to evaluate their teachers and even decide if they can stay on their positions or not. To this practice, people’s attitudes differ considerably. Some applaud it warmly whereas others criticize and even condemn it harshly.

Proponents of the practice may list the following reasons. In the first place, they assert that students are the people who know the most clearly about the teaching performance of a teacher, so they should have the say in evaluating him or her. In the second place, they contend that students have paid for their education, so they have the right to decide which teacher should be employed.

Opponents, however, point out that it is dangerous to leave the right to students to evaluate teachers. For one thing, students may not know what ought to be taught and how it should be taught; they may only judge a teacher according to his temper and even accent or appearance. For another, in order to please students, some teachers may resort to some improper means.

Personally, I believe that both views are justifiable, and we should achieve a balance between them by employing the evaluating approach in a reasonable and beneficial way. To be specific, students should be allowed to evaluate their teachers, but they may not be the only decision-maker in the teachers’ fate.

My View on Plastic Surgery

The past few years have witnessed a mounting number of people undergoing plastic surgery. To this practice, people’s attitudes differ considerably. Some applaud it warmly whereas others criticize and even condemn it harshly. Personally, I am opposed to plastic surgery, and I base my position on the following reasons.

In the first place, I deem that physical appearances are always of less great importance than inner beauty and practical ability. In the second place, I am definitely opposed to the concept that there is an established norm of beauty. Instead, I hold that beauty, even in the physical sense, manifests itself in varied ways. Last but not least, as is well known, plastic surgery can be very dangerous, resulting in some irreversible injuries.

Indeed, there are some individuals who have achieved success in their career or life with the help of plastic surgery, but it must be pointed out that they belong to the absolute minority and that their success depends far more than their improved physical appearance.

Taking into consideration all the above-mentioned, we may safely come to the conclusion that plastic surgery is definitely unnecessary for normal people. We should focus more on our inner world and try to attract others with our personality and intelligence.

College Students Playing Truant

The past few years have witnessed a mounting number of college students playing truant. Taking a look around, one can find examples too many to enumerate. Sometimes, even less than half of the students in a class attend the lecture..

A number of factors may be responsible for this phenomenon. Personally, I can come up with the following ones. In the first place, there exist faults with the arrangement of curriculum. In other words, some courses are irrelevant, or far beyond or below students. In the second place, some teachers are responsible for the phenomenon. Their teaching is far from attractive or efficient. Lastly, there exist reasons on the part of students, many of whom have become restless under the influence of some social trends.

Through years of hard work, they ___________ (已经把那片荒地变成了肥沃的农田).

例如,第47课Too High a Price?(《代价太高?》)中的一句话里就出现了这一词组:“There are only four ways you can deal with rubbish: dump it, burn it, turn it into something you can use again, attempt to produce less of it.”(我们只有四种对付垃圾的方法:倾倒、焚烧、把垃圾变成再生材料或试图少产生一些垃圾。)

参考译文 have turned that waste land into a fertile farm land

It was long since I last saw her, and if she had not greeted me first _____________ (我几乎认不出她来).

通过非真实条件句“if she had not greeted me first”,考生可知这句话是对过去事实的一种虚拟,因此空格中的主句应使用“would have done”的结构。

例如第2课Thirteen equals One (《十三等于一》)中就出现过这一动词:“In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.”(借着电筒光,他看见一个人,马上认出那是本地杂货店主比尔·威尔金斯。)

I would not have recognized her

《新概念3》的课文中也多次出现与过去事实相反的虚拟语气,例如第25课The Cutty Sark (《“卡帝萨克”号帆船》)中的一个句子:“There is no doubt that if she had not lost her rudder she would have won the race easily.”(毫无疑问,如果中途没有失去舵,“卡帝萨克”号肯定能在比赛中轻易夺冠。)

The longest Suspension Bridge in the World (《世界上最长的吊桥》)中有这样一句话:“It has been estimated that if the bridge were packed with cars, it would still only be carrying a third of its total capacity.”(据估计,若桥上摆满了汽车,也只不过是桥的总承载力的1/3。)

Too Early and Too Late (《太早和太晚》)中的一句话:“Without it, nothing could ever be brought to a conclusion; everything would be in state of chaos.”(不准时将一事无成,事事都会陷入混乱不堪的境地。) 实际上,这句话里without it就是一个含蓄的虚拟条件句,它可以表达为“if there were no punctuality”。

Our defense at the court hearing finally ________________ (使法官确信我们是清白的).

关于“确信”的表达法,我们在第1课A Puma at large (《逃遁的美洲狮》)中就遇到过:“The experts were now fully convinced that the animal was a puma, but where had it come from?”(专家们如今已经完全确信那只动物就是美洲狮,但它是从哪儿来的呢?) 第35课Justice Was Done (《伸张正义》)主要探讨了“伸张正义”的话题,其中有这样一句话:“We might say that justice has been done when a man’s innocence or guilt has been proved beyond doubt.”(当某人被证据确凿地证明无罪或有罪的时候,我们也许会说正义得到了伸张。) 此外,第35课中也出现了“法官”的英文表达法:“Judges, however wise or eminent, are human and can make mistakes.”(法官无论如何聪明与有名,毕竟也是人,也会出差错的。)

参考译文 convinced the judge of our innocence

大多数考生看到“使法官确信我们是清白的”时的第一反应便是将之译为“convinced the judge that we were innocent”。 其实这句话完全可以不用从句,而是简单地表达为“convinced the judge of our innocence”。 我们来看第9课Flying Cats (《飞猫》)中的一个句子:“Apparently, there is a good deal of truth in this idea. A cat’s ability to survive falls is based on fact.”(显然,这种说法有些道理。 这句话中突出显示的句子巧妙地用there be句型和名词结构取代了“this idea is probably true”这一老套的用法。

_________________ (你可以放心) we will fulfill our task ahead of time.

We can assure/reassure you that

我们来看第53课In the Public Interest (《为了公众的利益》)中的一个句子:“A foreigner living in a Swedish village wrote to the Ombudsman complaining that he had been ill-treated by the police, simply because he was a foreigner.”(一个住在瑞典乡村的外国人写信给司法特派员,抱怨说他受到警察的虐待,原因就是因为他是个外国人。)

Man should live in harmony with nature, and ______________ (试图征服它是不明智的).

①考查“it is + adj. + to do/that …” + to do …”

参考译文 it is not wise to try/attempt to conquer it

《新概念3》的课文中多次出现it作形式主语的情况,例如第1课中的句子:“It is disturbing to think that a dangerous wild animal is still at large in the quiet countryside.”(想到在宁静的乡村里有一头危险的野兽继续逍遥流窜,真令人担心。)

1 What can be inferred about the man?

A. He wears a coat bought in the mall.

B. He got a new job at the barbershop.

C. He had a finger hurt last night.

D. He had his hair cut yesterday. (卷一听力Section A Question 6)

在对话开头,一位女士说:“You look different today, but I can’t quite put my finger on (确切地指出) what it is.”随后,一位男士回答说:“Oh, yesterday I finally got around to that new barbershop in the mall and enjoyed their services.” He had his hair cut yesterday构成同义替换,因而选项D为正确答案。

2 What does the man mean?

A. College tuition has become a heavy burden for the students.

B. College students are in general politically active nowadays.

C. He took part in many protests when he was at college.

D. He is doubtful about the effect of the students’ action. (卷二听力Section A Question 1)

解析:在这段对话开头,一位女士说:“The students have been protesting against the increased tuition.”接下来一位男士说:“Yeah, I heard about the protest. But I don’t know how much good it will do.” (He is doubtful about the effect of the students’ action)构成同义替换。

3What does the woman say about Bilbao, Victoria and San Sebastian?

A. Their road link to other European countries is fast.

B. They are all located in the south of France.

C. They are very close to each other.

D. Their basic facilities are good. (卷一听力Section A Question 13)

根据题文同序原则,考生可将答案信息定位至录音原文第二句:“First, the basic facilities for the region are generally very good. At least between the three main cities, Bilbao, Victoria in the south and San Sebastian.”

4Why would the building be of brick construction?

A. To make the building appear traditional.

B. To cut the construction cost to the minimum.

C. To match the style of construction on the site.

D. To embody the subcommittee’s design concepts.

根据题文同序原则,考生可将答案信息定位至录音原文末尾的倒数第三句:“The building would be of brick construction so as to confirm to the general style of construction on the site.”

In my view, there are good reasons to undertake meaningful things that exert positive and profound influence on the society, such as protecting the environment, helping vulnerable groups as well as promoting education. To illustrate, Abraham Lincoln never wavered in his devotion to democracy and equality, whose life has become an inspiration in the United States and throughout the whole world. His life, though limited, definitely lasts longer, and is a life worth living. Likewise, a young person who aspires to be a great writer might decide to buy some literary books or spend weekends writing and refining his works. Without any aspiration, he might simply end up spending all his spare time surfing online or playing Internet games.

In brief, a meaningful life serves to motivate and guide us in our daily lives. It provides us with the focus and direction that enable us to work towards accomplishing a special goal, objective or task.
