Describe a small company that you think is successful.

You should say:

what the name is

how you know about it

what does this company do

and explain why do you think it is successful.

I want to tell you about a small company called “Two Guys One Pie”. I’m not sure you will have heard of them because they have a very small premises that is a little out-of-the-way. As far as I know, their only location is in the Sanlitun area of Beijing, down a back street, but I’ve heard it through the grapevine that they may be expanding.

I first knew about the shop through a friend of mine who shares my passion for pies. A good pie is like gold dust in Beijing, so if somewhere decent opens that sells them, you can be sure I’ll get wind of it. They do a bit of advertising in local magazines, but I think most people hear about “Two Guys One Pie” from word of mouth.

In my humble opinion, they made the best pies in Beijing. They are hands down the most delicious meat-filled pastry you’ll find this side of Australia! They also have interesting fillings such as Thai Green Curry or Italian Vegetables and are constantly updating their menu to keep people coming back for more.

Considering their humble beginnings, I can only assume their business is a huge success. Judging by the queues, they must be making a pretty penny. On their busiest evenings, people line up down the street to get a taste of their latest offering or old favourites.

You should say:

where and when the photo was taken or painted

which room it is in

what there are in the photo or painting

and explain why you like it.

Actually, I have a few paintings in my home. My girlfriend says it’s beginning to look like an art gallery! I guess you could call me a bit of an art-aholic, though I’m certainly no connoisseur.

By far my favourite piece is a large oil painting on canvas that I picked up on my travels in Bali. I had to roll it up to get it back to China and once I got home I had a bespoke frame made for it. It depicts a tree or plant of some sort, using an array of colours, from deep blues to vivid yellows. The image is very simple, being formed from a number of different coloured dots.

At the moment it is the centerpiece of my living room, takes pride of place on the main wall behind my sofa. There are other pieces of art in there, including some small statues and figurines, but they are eclipsed by the large oil painting, which truly dominates the room. Every guest we have visit passes comment on it, often complimenting its vibrant colours or simple aesthetic beauty.

You should say:

when it happened

what the gift is

why it took you so long to choose

and explain how he or she reacted to your gift.

I pride myself on finding the best presents, especially when they’re for my nearest and dearest. One present I’m particularly proud of was for my girlfriend on her 25th birthday. It was an extra-special moment as it was also near the time of our 5th anniversary. I wanted to buy her something that meant something to both of us and had that personal touch.

I put a lot of thought into it and, after chewing it over, I eventually chose to give her a picture using an enlarged photograph of us both, that was taken while we were on holiday in Shanghai. It was a very special moment for us both, so I knew it would have sentimental value to her.

But that wasn’t the half of it, next I had to pick out a frame for the picture. My girlfriend is a notoriously picky person, so I knew I had to get

You should say:

what you borrowed

who lent it to you and when

what kind of features this thing has

and explain why you think it is useful.

It’s funny you should ask this question as I actually borrowed something very useful just last week, so it’s very fresh in my memory.

I’ve been doing some D.I.Y. in my apartment lately, I’m trying to do it up so that it looks a bit nicer. I wanted to put some new shelves up, but I didn’t have the right equipment, so I asked my friend Jack if I could borrow his electric drill. I had lent him something a few weeks earlier, so he didn’t mind returning the favour.

Even though on the surface it is just a drill it is extremely versatile and has more features than you might expect. It comes with a wide range of attachments for drilling different sized holes or into different types of material. There are also attachments that turn it into a screwdriver or a sander, to sand down wood and give it a smooth edge.

I’m so grateful he lent it to me, it would have been hard work to drill by hand and it saved me loads of time and energy. I put the shelves up in no time and with minimal fuss.

You should say:

what it is

who gave it to you

what it looks like

and explain why it was important to you.

The first thing the pops into my head are my cats, Topsy and Turvy. They were my little bundles of joy whilst I was growing up.

When I was much younger I had another cat, called William. Sadly he was run over by a bus one day in front of our house. I can remember very vividly, one day I came home from school and my mum told me to look in the kitchen. I saw Topsy and Truvy and it was love at first sight. She told me when she had gone to collect them she only intended to buy one kitten, she put Topsy into the box and Turvy was mewing so loudly and scratching the box. She decided they were soul mates and couldn’t separate them.

I have no idea what kind of cats they were, all I can tell you is that they were painfully cute. Topsy was ginger and Turvy was ginger and white. Turvy had little white patches on his paws that made it look like he was wearing mittens. Topsy was a little furrier and made him look fat. One was shy and the other more outgoing. Like all brothers, they would sometimes fight and at other times cuddle up together.

One achievement that makes me really proud is that my website, DailyStep English, has been nominated for “Best Website ” in the Macmillan Dictionary “Love English” Awards. This nomination is the result of a huge amount of really hard work in taking my original idea of learning English in simple steps, just one step per day, and turning it into an internationally successful e-learning tool, which is used around the world by many thousands of people.

Running DailyStep has been particularly difficult over the last year as we upgraded to a completely new website, built with different computer coding. This was tough for me as I had to learn a lot about how websites work in order to communicate with a team of developers. I had to learn to talk their language – the language of computers!

Another thing I take great pride in is that we are now recording all the dialogues in our audio lessons in American English as well as British English. The American actors we employ are taking great care to adapt the British language into natural American English. This means that my students can choose which accent to speak, and understand both accents, including the difference in vocabulary, especially idioms and phrasal verbs. The reason I am particularly proud of this aspect is that it makes the content of our lessons totally unique, and we and our American actors are constantly surprised at how different British and American English really are! It’s a matter of great pride for me that I have managed to make all this work, and it gives me a huge sense of achievement. However, the thing that makes me the most proud of all is the thought that so many people around the world have improved their English using my method.

This sample answer took around 2 minutes, which is the maximum time you need to speak without stopping in Part 2 of the IELTS speaking exam.

You should say:

What the change was

When it happened

How it happened

and explain why it was a positive change

The change was basically that I decided I needed to get a bit fitter, and the thing that helped me do so was joining up to do Parkrun. However, I’m jumping ahead. Let me explain how it came about… A couple of years ago I started to feel like I was getting old and losing my basic fitness. Although I walked quite a lot, I wasn’t really doing anything else very much that was physical. I was never very good at sports, so I didn’t really know where to begin. However, I’ve always liked being outdoors, so on something of a whim I booked an activity holiday in Northumberland, which is a beautiful rural area in the north east of England, right by the coast. The holiday was great. We did abseiling; hill walking; body-surfing – all sorts of things. In addition, every morning began with a run along the sands of the seaside. Now I’d never run before – well only if I was trying to catch a bus, but otherwise, not at all. I wasn’t very good at it, and honestly, I didn’t even really enjoy it all that much. However, I did have to concede that it is a great form of exercise. You don’t really need any special equipment (apart from decent trainers); you can do it anywhere and it’s free! What’s more, I found out from some other holiday makers that in the UK there is a free weekly event held nationwide in parks all over the country. It is called Parkrun, and basically people gather every Saturday morning at 9.00 a.m. to run a fixed course of 5km and get a time for doing so. I wasn’t too sure if this would be achievable for me. I’d never run that far before. But I promised myself I would try it ‘just once’ to see if I could.

The day after I got back from my holiday I turned up to do the Parkrun at my local park. I can tell you the exact day! It was 24th August – I know this because the whole point of Parkrun is that if you register (which is free) then the organisation records your time each week and you can access it online afterwards. The first time I went I didn’t even manage to run the whole way round, but I did finish, and I did get a great sense of achievement. Because you know your time, it is quite addictive, you find you do want to go again the next week and see if you can improve! My local parkrun is huge, with well over 500 runners taking part every week – so even though I was pretty slow, I found I wasn’t the slowest.

Since that day over two years ago, I’ve found that I’ve gone to Parkrun almost every week. I have taken part in some 70 parkruns, and through doing so made new friends, maintained a certain level of fitness, and even gained the confidence to take part in some longer runs. I’ve done lots of 10km races now, a few off-road runs – including one over 24km as well as taken part in obstacle races! I would never have believed that the small change of ‘just going once’ to Parkrun to ‘give it a go’ would lead to me being such an enthusiastic member of Parkrun two years later. By the way, I haven’t really ever got any faster, but I’m definitely a lot fitter. Now I can’t imagine a Saturday morning without heading off for a run with my 500 friends at the local park! That first day I turned up nervously to join in with Parkrun was definitely the beginning of a positive change in my life!

Well, I’d like to talk about the very first time that I rode a bicycle. It was a long time ago, the summer after I finished primary school. At that age, most of my friends could already cycle, but for me it was quite difficult, as I was extremely bad at keeping my balance and so I was very reluctant to learn.

However, that summer, my grandfather decided to teach me how to ride and we practised every morning. And after suffering from several bad falls, eventually I was able ride the bicycle myself, without my grandpa’s help. It was a real thrill and I remember feeling extremely happy as I rode around my neighborhood, although actually I was also a little bit nervous and afraid of crashing into others.

Thanks to my grandpa, that day I realized that I was not as weak as I had thought and I could conquer my fear to take on any challenge ahead. From that time on, I started to go to school and go out with friends on my bike and finally I was able to enjoy the pleasure of feeling independent and mature. Maybe at that time, my grandpa’s purpose was only to encourage me to ride, but thanks to it, I became stronger and more confident about myself in general. Several years later, I read a quote that says “Life is like riding a bicycle. To keep your balance, you must keep moving on”. It reminded me of that day and the important basic lesson that my grandpa taught me.

I have started focusing on me and have started exploring a new me and that is a very positive change for me. For the last 20 years of my life, I was a typical girl who never thought of herself and did her duties and responsibilities for others.

Time was going on and my life was also going on with time in a very banal way. There was no value of time, life and thought. Only there was a tough routine that I had to follow and dedicate myself for others. I do not have any complaints dedicating me for the benefit of others, but that was so typical that I forgot my own existence and my own dreams.

My dreams were surrounded by someone special. It’s all about someone whom I loved more than my life. But the moment I realised that with whom I nurture all of my dreams, is lost in a very different world where I do not have a special place, I was broken and shaken up. That realisation initially gave me a feeling of being a loser and helpless one. It forcefully pulled me at the end of the world and I totally lost my confidence, believe in believing and did not seek any reason to live.

In that regrettable moments, I never stopped thinking and I asked questions to myself even when I was asleep. I was started regaining my confidence after I started realising the fact and reality. I was determined to hit the sky and not to feel like a looser. I will never forget the great contributions my friends had overcoming this fatal time and they advised me why I have to love myself and explore my own dreams even after someone has shattered my dreams. They helped me to get out from my dilemma. They reminded me who am I, who could I be.

The perception of life, reality and dreams seem like have changed in me and I am happy for the changes. It has helped me find the reality, a new me. Now I love myself even more with my every possibility and dream. Now I am taking a journey to look forward and reach a definite goal I have. I don’t know where it would go but I learnt to walk alone, confidently and I love my own reflection.

The feelings were mixed. In fact, it was the very first visit to any Chinese home. So, I could not think what to do or how to respond.

What part of your study do you enjoy most?

题目:What part do you enjoy most in your study?

Question: What part of your study do you enjoy most?

Sample answer:

We do loads of things in study. And I suppose the most enjoyable and pleasant part is group discussions, especially like in seminars. We have this sort of discussions normally in major subjects classes. During communications with classmates about something difficult or important to comprehend, we can have a better understanding of what we are studying and our efficiency is largely improved. Also, through frequent discussions in a group, we have become closer to each other. We do not only get academic benefits but also friendship. That’s why I think I love group discussions.
