近年来, 二语习得研究和语料库语言学逐渐得到更多的重视, 而词块在语言本身和二语习得中的重要性也引起了更多的关注, 词块也逐渐成为语言学和语言教学研究界的热点话题。

近年来词块已经被越来越多的学者所注意, 对其的研究也逐渐增多, 研究也从对语块的理论介绍扩展到实证研究的方向。刁琳琳 (2004) 通过对英语专业学生词块能力的实证性研究发现发现词块能力与语言综合能力及具体语言技能之间均具有显著的正相关关系。丁言仁、戚焱 ( 2005) 以英语专业二年级学生为研究对象, 研究了二语词块运用能力和二语口语、写作水平之间的关系, 发现与语法知识相比, 词块知识对口语、写作成绩具有更强的预测力, 借用词块的能力与口语水平密切相关, 水平较高的学生往往能够借用更多的词块。马广惠 (2009) 以英语专业学生二语限时写作为对象语料, 和英语本组语写作者的说明文进行对照研究后发现:有三分之一的词块使用和本组语的频率接近, 但是三分之二的词块使用频率低于本组语, 且某些词块存在过度输出的情况, 说明学生在词块的使用上和本族语使用者还存在较大差距。张霞 (2010) 以跨多个句子成分CC (multiple clause constituent) 为例, 从宏观和微观两个角度考察了学习者和本族语者使用不同功能性词块的趋势、词块功能和分布的交互数据, 发现二语学习者和英语本族语者在词块使用和功能认识上存在较大差别, 同时对于不同功能的词块在句子中出现的位置也有不同处理方式。王蕾、陈婵 (2013) 通过调查英语学习者复述故事中词块的使用情况, 发现学习者在词块的使用频率和准确度上存在差别, 词块的记忆和使用能力存在差距, 并且母语对二语词块使用有正相关影响。

从以往的研究可以发现, 词块处理和运用能力是判断二语能力的一个重要指标, 而且大部分的研究还表明二语学习者的词块运用能力普遍低于英语本组语者。但是这些研究大多数以英语专业学生为研究对象, 且内容主要基于写作或限时口语考试等, 鲜有针对不同高层次二语学习者或是其他形式的口语输出方式因此, 本文以一组参加演讲比赛的学生为研究对象, 试图探讨其二语词块知识和使用情况。

2 词块定义

词块是指在写作、交流中出现频率高于单个单词出现频率的现象, 同时其表达方式和意义较为固定。词块没有较为固定的具体含义, 它既可以表示自然语言中可以被整块提取的短语结构, 又可以表示英语中最基本的语言单位。

语言是由大量的词块构成的, 词块又是构成语篇的重要组成部分, 因此, 合理使用词块能丰富文章的表达。通过文字比较来看, 能熟练使用英语词块的文章表达要比不能熟练使用词块的表达丰富得多, 大量的形容词语块的使用能使表达生动形象, 大量的连词词块的使用能使表达连贯通顺。

词块有以下几种分类方式:按结构分类、按功能分类、按成分词数分类、按出现频率分类, 以及按紧密程度分类。不同的分类方式可以对词块的不同方面进行研究。本文中所运用的词块分类方式主要有按功能分类、按成分词数分类和按出现频率分类。

词块的熟练使用有助于对单词、语句的整体认知, 同时整体把握单词、词组的记忆。在英语学习中, 掌握词块尤为重要。

3 研究对象及其采集

对于本文的研究对象中词块的识别与提取, 主要采用基于语料库的方法 (Biber, et al., 1999) 和多方印证法 ( Schmitt, etal. , 2004; Simpson-Vlach & Ellis, 2010) 。基于语料库的方法主要依据是词块出现的频率和分布的标准, 即在语料库中, 某词块出现的频率和分布达到一定标准的语言片段, 即被视为词块;多方印证法及在给定的录音稿中听辨相应的词块, 根据不同听辨者识别的结果进行对比, 最终得出频率使用较高的词块, 这种方法是识别词块的最佳方法。上述两种方法均在研究对象的采集中利用到。

本文以参加2013年“外研社杯”全国英语演讲大赛的参与者在第一部分定题演讲中口头表达的输出内容作为研究对象。在语料采集时, 尽量保持了演讲稿原貌, 由于是演讲, 自由性较大, 不可避免会存在语法、用词的错误, 甚至思路不够连贯或逻辑混乱的情况。

在语料采集中, 删除了语音不清、错误表达、语音支吾的部分。本次研究共采集演讲稿30篇, 共计一万多词, 单篇演讲稿长度为300~500词, 平均长度为每篇375词。演讲主题为When Socrates Meets Confucius。

4 研究过程

首先, 将采集的语料进行分类, 包括记叙性文章、议论性文章以及描述性文章。然后对每类文章进行词块提出, 两人分别提取, 然后进行比对, 最终两人提取结果相同率达到95%。其次, 将词块分类为二词词块、三词词块、四词词块和多词词块, 再根据词块性质二次归类。

综合词块的定义及性质分类, 提取的目标词包括以下几种。

1) 动词词块, 例如:encourage sb. to do sth.result in, find out等;

2) 名词词块, 例如:various kinds of, hundreds of, all sorts of等;

3) 连词词块, 例如:as well as, apart from, on the other hand等;

4) 介词词块, 例如:in front of, in the middle of, because of等。

从30 篇演讲稿中, 共提取出347 个目标词块, 其中二词词块121个, 占总数的34. 8%;三词词块182个, 占总数的52.4%;四词词块34 个, 占总数的9.7%;多次词块10 个, 占总数的2.9%。

Biber等人 (1999) 的研究证实, 在英语的口语使用和书面语语料中, 三词词块的数量是四词词块数量的10 倍。本研究语料所提取的三词词块没有达到四词词块的10 倍, 但三词词块和四词词块的比例接近6:1, 三词词块数量明显多于四词词块, 和英语本族语者词块使用分布大致相同。另外, 347个目标词块在语料中出现的总频数为3000 余次, 总文本数为10000 余词, 词块使用比例达到三分之一。

从词块的使用类型上分析, 每篇演讲稿使用不同类型词块的平均数量为3.5 种, 平均每一百词出现0.88 种, 不足一种, 这说明了演讲者在使用英语词块上不够丰富, 比较欠缺。

5 研究结果

在提取的347 个词块中, 动词词块数量最多, 共计139 个, 占词块总数的40.1%, 每篇演讲稿中平均出现的动词词块的频率为4.6次。

其次为名词词块, 共计119 个, 占词块总数的34.3%, 每篇演讲稿中平均出现的名词词块的频率为4.0次。

连词词块, 共计73个, 占词块总数的21.0%, 每篇演讲稿中平均出现的连词词块的频率为2.4次。

介词词块, 共计16 个, 占词块总数的4.6%, 每篇演讲稿中平均出现的介词词块的频率为0.5次。

总体分析结果表明, 每个词块在演讲中平均出现2.8 次。从以上分析可以看出, 词块在演讲稿语料中没有出现过度使用的情况。同时这一结果也表明了, 演讲者在词块的使用上和本族语使用者存在差距。词块的习得和掌握的要求之一就是需要二语学习者能在写作和日常对话中熟练使用常见词块。虽然本次语料分析的对象是水平较高的英语使用者, 但是他们在词块使用上还有所欠缺。

由于演讲主题是When Socrates Meets Confucius, 因此In my opinion和On my own这样表达个人观点的词块使用得就相对较多。其他几类词块属于丰富演讲内容。由此可见, 文体的不同、表达任务的不同、语境的不同都会限制词块类型的使用, 同时会影响词块类型使用频率。

6 结论

通过对语料的使用频率及使用特点具体研究, 得出以下结论。

1) 被研究对象使用英语词块的类型, 按频率由高至低排序分别为动词词块、名词词块、介词词块、形容词词块以及连词词块。

2) 演讲者不能完全流利自如地使用词块用以口头表达, 使用种类不够丰富, 词块使用比较单一, 词块使用重复率较高。

“外研社杯”全国大学生英语演讲比赛是一项极具影响力的赛事。近几年,随着中国大学生对英语学习的兴趣不断提高和高水平选手的纷纷涌现,公众对此项赛事的关注度也越来越高。如何在这样一场聚集了众多英语演讲好手的比赛中脱颖而出呢?深厚的英文功底,熟练地演讲技巧,准确的说,是英文演讲技巧,敏捷的临场反应等等这些都是不可或缺的因素。古人有云:不打无准备之仗。充分精细的赛前准备是成功的一半。以上所提到的演讲中必备的因素都是可以通过长期而富有针对性的培训而获取的,所以从这一方面来讲,此次培训的重要性也就不言而喻了。

对于一名准备参加全国高水平演讲比赛的学生来说,不论前期你的演讲技巧是否熟练,心理素质是否过硬,但自身的英语水平必须过硬。因为知识,尤其是语言的积累不是一朝一夕的事情,它是长期努力的表现结果。当然也绝不能因为自身英语水平还不错就有所懈怠。要知道山外有山,楼外有楼。一切的准备都会在比赛中发挥出它应有的作用。

一、初步阶段,可以进行以下的几项环节

1.朗诵、背诵美文

朗诵和背诵美文的过程即是在帮助选手增强语感,调整思维。大声的朗诵出来并进录音,纠音是一种直接且有效的认清和改进自己不足的方法。反复几次可以达到自我改正的效果。单单朗诵文章还是远远不够的,要想让那些令人为之“倾心震撼”的好词好句变成自己的,就要牢固的将它们输入进大脑中。背诵的过程不断地刺激你的大脑皮层,使你对整篇文章的结构和脉络会有全新的认识,对一些固定搭配,语法的使用形成条件反射。

这里需要强调的是,选文的范围不需要很杂,挑选一本适合自己的书籍进行朗读背诵才可事半功倍。若一味的只是注重量大而忽略对知识掌握程度的正确估计,只会得不偿失。

2.对经典的演讲进行模仿

接下来,可以对经典的演讲录音进行语音语调上的模仿。学习起伏强弱,语速上的把控等。在正确的发音基础上,形成颇令人信服的演讲发声方式,有助于演讲内容的丰满。

3.试写评论性文章

写下对自己的所朗诵或背诵的文章的感想,从不同角度锻炼自己对待事物的不同看法,或赞同或有疑义,总之言之有理即可。懂得发出自己的声音,锻炼自己的思维,为接下来的培训做准备。毕竟,最终的演讲稿完全是你自己的所思所想,是否言之有物不空洞,是裁定演讲稿优秀与否的关键。

二、培训中期,需要多人合作进行

1.进行定时演讲

演讲之所以称之为演讲,是因为它需要向他人传达信息,这其中存在着微妙的互动关系。演讲从来都不是自说自话的单人表演,它需要眼神的沟通,现场氛围的沟通,这些都是极其重要的。也就是说,“演讲不仅是个人行为,而且是社会行为。”以小组的形式进行培训就解决了演讲者在准备时只能朝空气抒发情感的尴尬,同时还可以锻炼演讲者在众人面前表现的胆量和素质。

在台下聆听的其他小组成员可以就台上的演讲者的演讲进行点评,这样显得更为客观。同时可以锻炼成员们的批判是聆听技巧。“聆听技巧同演讲技巧同等重要。在你的一生中,你会见到不计其数的公共信息传播方式:课堂授课、电视广告以及聊天室交流等。通过练习聆听,你将学会如何准确反应以及准确评估他人的公众演讲。”

在实践中我们发现,此项进程一定要主意时间的把握。因为定时演讲的目的就是要锻炼演讲者在规定时间内阐述自己的观点的能力。演讲时间超过规定时间的原因可能是准备内容过多,也可能是由于准备不充分而浪费了时间,时间到了还没有讲完。而演讲时间剩余过多则是因为语速过快;内容准备不充分;忘词,这也就是我们经常可以看到一些不成熟的演讲者站在台上翻白眼,做小动作,尴尬的苦想。

解决这些问题除了充分的准备,还有就是要进行大量的实战演练,让演讲变成一种习惯,培养演讲者对时间的把控能力。

实践中还有一个问题值得关注,演讲者的演讲内容是否扣题。我们发现一些演讲者很容易在演讲的过程中跑题,或者干脆一开始就误读了演讲题目。这需要加强锻炼演讲者对一个演讲题目中重要信息的敏锐度和理解。可以有新颖独到的观点想法,但不能过分偏激。

2.观看精彩演讲视频

在观看视频时,不仅仅要关注演讲者的语音,抑扬顿挫,更要留意演讲者的神态、姿态和精神面貌。他是如何与观众进行交流的,他是怎么抓住观众的注意力的,这些都是演讲中最基本的点,但却又是很难做到的。

反复的观看并能真正的将所所学运用到自己的演讲中来,摒弃羞涩,建立足够自信的内心,正视自己,更要直视观众。

3.关注时事并书写评论性文章

这一部分是承接初步阶段中“试写评论性文章”而来的。而在这一时期要从评论一些美文到社会时事,并且字数需要增加,文章的逻辑感也要更深一步加强。这些练习还在一定程度上增加了演讲者的知识储备量。

三、培训后期,进入高层次对抗练习

1.采用辩论赛形式

辩论赛的形式可以是两两辩论,也可以是多人辩论。这样既增加了培训的趣味性,同时也在激烈的脑力风暴中给予选手不一样的灵感。

但这项活动对选手的反应能力和英语水平要求相对较高,如果选手达不到举办辩论赛的程度最好不要采用这种形式。因为在这个过程中选手们并不能得到充分的锻炼。

书写演讲稿,选手们逐一进行演讲,最终评价出孰高孰低,创造紧张的比赛氛围,有助于选手们提前进入备战状态。经过一段时间的培训,站在演讲台的选手们基本上已经具备了一名真正的演讲者的风采,成熟自信,游刃有余。

3.学会思考听众们的需求

在与他人交流的时候,演讲者应考虑到听众们的需求并思考如何将这些需求放入到自己的演讲内容里。不是在一味的告诉听众你要讲的是什么,而是“了解听众渴望感觉、知道和体验的是什么,这样才能引起他们的思想转变。”③只有演讲内容与听众产生了相关性,听众才会变得积极,演讲的气氛才会活跃,你的演讲才可以向“成功”迈进。当然这是更高层次的要求,而这种要求又恰恰是奠定你的演讲是否能引起共鸣的关键。

“外研社杯”全国大学生英语演讲比赛成功的举办了很多年。但是选手们多以自己准备为主,这样的一次赛前培训,将有志于在比赛中取得好成绩的同学们聚集起来,就是从根本上建立起一种竞争的环境,互相学习,取长补短。将赛前准备变得系统,有章法,同时可以进行量化评估。对此次培训成果的最终检验还需通过演讲比赛,但这次的培训从某种程度上来说已经是一种创新。这种创新使我们具有了在这一培训领域的经验,对于以后再举办此项活动帮助很大。

2011年“外研社杯”(原CCTV杯)全国大学生英语演讲大赛福建赛区决赛于11月26日在龙岩学院举行,来自厦门大学、福州大学和福建师范大学等20多所省内高校共60名选手参加了本次比赛。我校10级商学系李璇同学荣获特等奖,08外语系郑晓东同学荣获一等奖,10数创学院叶洋同学荣获二等奖。其中,李璇同学将代表福建省参加12月5日到9日在北京举行的全国总决赛。继连叶海获得2010全国大学生英语演讲比赛二等奖后,公外学生已连续2年获得外研社杯全国大学生英语演讲比赛福建赛区特等奖。

“外研社杯”全国英语演讲大赛的前身为“CCTV杯”全国英语演讲大赛,是由外语教学与研究出版社主办、教育部高等学校大学外语教学指导委员会及高等学校英语专业教学指导分委员会联合举办的全国性英语演讲大赛。被誉为全国水准最高的大学生英语演讲比赛,在全国高校中有着重要的影响。大赛旨在以丰富的内容与严谨的形式,通过各地高校、大学外语教学研究会以及主办单位有组织、分层次的选拔,为全国大学生创造一个激励外语学习、展示综合能力,培养优秀人才的平台,多角度展现选手的演讲水平与综合能力,着力拓宽学生视野,引导学生关注热点,培养思辨能力与文化沟通能力。

本次比赛邀请了福建师范大学外国语学院院长林大津教授、福建省大学外语教学研究会会长吴松江教授、厦门大学外文学院院长杨信彰教授,吴建平教授、以及龙岩学院副校长来永宝和美籍教师Debra Sanders等10位专家担任大赛评委。共分命题演讲、问题回答、即兴演讲三个环节。比赛开始后,所有选手们按照抽签序号一一上台进行三分钟的定题演讲。选手们以“A word that has changed the world ”为主题各抒己见,精辟透彻地阐述了自己的观点。每位选手都以熟练的英语、敏捷的思维、宽广的知识面、恰如其分的演讲技巧震撼了在座的评委。最终来自厦门大学、集美大学及我校厦门理工学院的三位选手披荆斩棘,脱颖而出,荣获特等奖。整场比赛高潮迭起,选手们为在场观众呈现了一场扣人心弦的精彩比赛。

该项目自今年4月份在我校启动以来,吸引了我校学生的极大关注,大赛校级初赛和省级复赛在理工校园里掀起了英语演讲学习与英语应用的热潮。选手们此次所取得的成绩既离不开他们平时的勤奋刻苦学习,也得益于外语系苏恩老师和李疆彤老师等多位老师的精心指导。近年来,我校外语系结合课程改革,强化学生英语语言综合能力、跨文化交际能力等核心能力的培养,取得了显著成效,指导的学生在各类比赛中屡获佳绩,为学校争得了荣誉。

我系历年来十分重视学生的英语应用能力培养,在积极进行大学英语第一课堂教学改革的基础上,大力加强英语第二课堂建设,以英语文化节为主打品牌、学生英语发展中心为载体、英语花园、英语竞赛为特色,在老师的指导下,常年开展外语文化节、英语花园、英语演讲、写作、戏剧、外文歌曲、配音等第二课堂活动,既激发了学生学习英语的兴趣,培养了学生应用英语的意识,又活跃了校园文化氛围,拓展了学生综合素质。近两年来,先后有多名学生在全国和福建省英语应用类比赛中获奖。

学生英语发展中心

由社联主办、社联学生英语协会承办的英语演讲比赛于11月08日晚在C-303和C304教室拉开序幕。大学生英语演讲比赛活动旨在激发广大学生对英语学习的热情,提高对英语口语训练的积极性,丰富学生的课余生活,提高学生们的英语口语水平,给学生提供一个可以展现自我,激励他人的舞台。

此次大赛面向全院学生,共有来自09、10级各班的130名选手参加。本次大赛经过激烈的海选和复选后共有17名选手进入决赛!11月17日在A-211教室举办最为精彩、激烈的决赛!为了比赛的客观公正特别邀请了外语系英语教师黄洁、郑瑞、左雪成、黄琳以及疯狂英语工作部教师汤昆和张玉友助教担当此次大赛的评委。比赛现场反应热烈,掌声不断。各个选手都做了充分的准备,并充分运用了形体语言来展现自己的青春激情和自信风采,其中有几位选手地道流畅的语音语调赢得了评委很高的评价和观众热烈的掌声。
