On the Senior Empty Nests

For most senior students in universities, the last academic year has nothing to do with academics. To the frustration of professors, few courses are attended by students. And dorms are almost vacant with few lodgers. This kind of phenomenon, which has been called “Senior Empty Nests”, is common among universities of China.

Where have those absent senior students gone? Some lucky dogs have gone to their new jobs while the majority are still striving to get a job or engaging in their internship outside of the campus. The severe employment pressure has pushed senior students into employment market earlier. The anxiety of getting a job before graduation disturbs the restless mind of every student, which leads to skipping school of most students.

In my view, with senior students leaving campus earlier, their time of education has been reduced, which puts them in a disadvantaged position in the employment market. Students should start job hunting after finishing the courses of the last academic year. At the same time, the universities should provide career education for senior students.

Nowadays, the employmentof college students is becoming more and more of a problem. About a decade ago, university students could find satisfactory and enviable jobs after graduation, while at current situation, about 30% of graduate students can’t find a job but stay at home after graduation.

Employment difficulty of college students is due to the following reasons. Among these, the increasing recruitment of colleges and universities plays a vital role. In addition, many colleges and universities fail to adapt their courses to the development of economy.

Considering such a rough job market, I think it is high time that we took effective measures to solve the problem. Above all, college students should realize their own defects and further improve themselves to keep their competitive edge in society. Moreover, colleges or universities should provide more trainings and internship opportunities before the students enter the society. Besides, college students should hold a right attitude towards jobs and set their job expectations at a suitable level. Only through these ways can the college students find a satisfactory job and have a brighter future.

Of course, the truth is not so simple. This century, the work of cognitive psychologists has illuminated the subtle forms of daily learning on which intellectual progress depends. Children were observed as they slowly grasped-----or, as the case might be, bumped into-----concepts that adults take for quantity is unchanged as water pours from a short glass into a tall thin one. Psychologists have since demonstrated that young children, asked to count the pencils in a pile, readily report the number of blue or red pencils, but must be coaxed into finding the total. Such studies have suggested that the rudiments of mathematics are mastered gradually, and with effort. They have also suggested that the very concept of abstract numbers------the idea of a oneness,a twoness , a threeness that applies to any class of objects and is a prerequisite for doing anything more mathematically demanding than setting a table-----is itself far from innate

For one rare weekend Afghans like Ismail Qoreshi were happy. Standing outside Golds Gym in central Kabul, Qoreshi says the weekend presidential elections were a huge success.

He says, this is a happy moment for Afghans, we have voted for a new leader. ... 95 percent of the people are happy that things were quiet and they cast their votes. It is good for our people.

About seven million voters braved Taliban death threats to cast their ballots for a new president Saturday.

The vote, says Andrew Wilder of the United States Institute of Peace, was a decisive message to the militants.

If seven million Afghans turned out to vote, despite all these threats, I think there is only to interpret that as a real significant defeat for the Taliban, he said.

But while the voting is over, the election process is not. Allegations of fraud have begun to come in and the Taliban on Sunday attacked a convoy carrying boxes full of ballots to be counted. The election workers were killed, and the boxes destroyed.

Haunting scenes of Ebola victims in West Africa are a common sight on television news. But for many West African immigrants living in New York City, the deadly outbreak is personal.

New York City is home to more than 70,000 people born in Western Africa. Many hail from countries hardest hit by Ebola, including Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone. Many still have family and friends in those nations.

Like Leo Fraser, whose aunt who lives in Sierra Leone.

Right now the family is figuring out how to get her more supplies, so she wont have to leave the home. You know, because the more she interacts with the general population the more she is at risk for contracting Ebola, said Fraser.

Ebola has no known cure. And the current West African outbreak is on pace to infect more people than all the previous outbreaks combined.

The fly, named Belgica antarctica, is a survivor, or as Washington State University evolutionary biologist Joanna Kelley likes to put itan extremophile.

This fly has to withstand freezing, extreme temperature changes so in the Antarctic summer its on the rocks and those are getting quite hot, Kelley said. But imagine the Antarctic winter, its very dark and cold. Theres a lot of UV [ultraviolet] radiation. Theres dehydration. And anything you can imagine as an extreme pressure, this fly probably encounters it.

Common fly

The fly is a midge, a group of small flies found practically everywhere on earth.

This midge has evolved to survive in the extreme environment of the rocky outcrops of the Antarctic Peninsula.

It is wingless, so it cant be swept up by the wind and blown into the sea. It can also tolerate 40 percent or more water loss in its cells, more than double that of other midges.

task 1

Human beings have used tools for a very long time. In some parts of the world you can still find tools that people used more than two million years ago. They made these tools by hitting one stone against another. In this way, they broke off pieces from one of the stones. These chips of stone were usually sharp on one side. People used them for cutting meat and skin from dead animals, and also for making other tools out of wood.

Human beings needed to use tools because they did not have sharp teeth like other meat eating animals, such as lions and tigers. Tools helped people to get food more easily. Working with tools also helped to develop human intelligence. The human brain grew bigger, and human beings began to invent more and more tools and machines. The stone chip was one of the first tools that people used, and perhaps it is the most important. Some scientists say that it was the key to success of mankind.?

1. The stone chip is thought to be the most important tool because it ______.

A. was one of the first tools B. developed human capabilities? C. led to the invention of machines

D. was crucial to the development of mankind

2. At the end of the passage the author seems to suggest that life in future is ______.

A. disastrous B. unpredictable C. exciting D. colorful

“Some scientists say that it was the key to the success of mankind”

task 2

Glacier National Park in Montana shares boundaries with Canada, an American Indian reservation, and a national forest. Along the North Fork of the Flathead River, the park also borders about 17,000 acres of private lands that are currently used for ranching, timber, and agriculture. This land is an important part of the habitat and migratory routes for several endangered species that frequent the park. These private lands are essentially the only ones available for development in the region. With encouragement from the park, local landowners initiated a land use planning effort to guide the future of the North Fork. The park is a partner in an inter local agreement that calls for resource managing agencies to work together and with the more than 400 private owners in the area. A draft plan has been prepared, with objective of maintaining traditional economic uses but limiting new development that would damage park resources. Voluntary action by landowners, in cooperation with the park and the county, is helping to restrict small lot subdivisions, maintain wildlife corridors, and minimize any harmful impact on the environment.

The willingness of local landowners to participate in this protection effort may have been stimulated by concerns that congress would impose a legislative solution. Nevertheless, many local residents want to retain the existing character of the area. Meetings between park officials and landowners have led to a dramatically improved understanding of all concerns.

1. The passage mainly discusses______.

A. the endangered species in Glacier National Park

B. the protection of lands surrounding Glacier National Park

C. conservation laws imposed by the state of Montana

D. conservation laws imposed by Congress

2. Why are the private lands surrounding Glacier National Park so important?

A. They function as a hunting preserve.

B. They are restricted to government use.

C. They are heavily populated.

D. They contain natural habitats of threatened species.

3. The relationship between park officials and neighboring landowners may best be described as______.

A. indifferent B. intimate?C. cooperative D. disappointing

4. It can be inferred from the passage that a major interest of the officials of Glacier National Park is to______.

A. limit land development around the park

B. establish a new park in Montana

C. influence national legislation

D. settle border disputes with Canada

根据第一段第三句“This land is an important part of the habitat and migratory routes for several endangered species that frequent the park.”(这片土地是非常重要的,因为这里是几种经常光顾此公园的濒危物种的栖息地和迁徙路线。)
