Dear Mr. Brown RE: Order Number RB27531

A critical pedagogy training programme will be held next term in Shanghai Only international pedagogy training center. I was invited to attend the training next term. I would be grateful if you could permit my leaving next term.

Now it is the first term that I have been here. I really enjoy working in this school, while learning a lot from our colleagues. But as a new teacher here, I still have some puzzles and find it hard to deal with some problems. Do you remember that I have mentioned them during the department meeting last week? It seems that some of the puzzles are rather common among our colleagues, especially methods on improving students’ writing ability and language learning strategies. We know that the students in our school are weak in writing compared to students in other Schools. The programme is especially famous for its writing teaching. What’s more, it will cover some of the latest scientific studies on teaching methods and classroom management. We know that teaching standard is essential to our school development. In my opinion, we still have a long way to go in terms of teaching standard.

Another point I’d like to mention is that the programme will cost 2,000rmb. So I am also writing to inquire whether the school would pay all or some of the course fees if I get the permission. Since I have got much information of the pedagogy training programme, I think it is worthwhile to spend the time and money. In the long run, it would benefit our school greatly.

雷雨(A Thunder Storm)

As I sat in my room one summer day preparing my lessons, I felt that it was very hot and disagreeable. The sun shone brightly and the birds kept perching on the trees which, as there was no wind, made no stir. Suddenly a dark cloud hid the sun. The wind began to blow. I knew that a storm would soon come.

The sky was full of black clouds. Flashes of lightning lit up the courtyards, old houses and porches, and thunder began to roar overhead. No birds sang any longer while the leaves of the trees rustled and a wind blew against our faces. A drop of water fell, then another, and then the rain fell on the roofs with a noise like the beating of drums. A brilliant stripe of light filled the sky. Suddenly there came a terrible thunderclap overhead, and then the sky was full of roars of thunder.

After a while, the rain stopped and the thunder and lightning ceased. The sky became blue again, and the birds once more sang sweetly, while the trees and the flowers seemed almost as happy as before.

Dear Professor,

I beg to apply for a week’s leave from 15th to 22nd in November to look after my cousin. She is undergoing tremendous pain taken from the pneumonia. Her best friend, Sue, told me that my cousin, Joanna, had begun to count the carriages in her funeral procession yesterday. Enclosed please find a certificate from the doctor who has attended Joanna. According to the descriptions from Sue, Joanna counted the numbers of an old, old ivy vine climbed half way up the brick wall.
