这些年来,中学英语教学远不能适应改革开放和形式发展的需要,中学生的总体水平明显偏低,使用英语的能力较低,大多数学生只粗略懂一点英语语法,能辨认一些单词,听、说、读、写能力低下,造成这种局面的原因是多方面的,我觉得其中之一就是教学方法保守。如何改进英语语法教学,使之达到优质高效的目的,我以从教多年来的教学经验觉得:语法教学的目的是使学生更好地进行听、说、读、写等语言实践活动,而不是让学生死记硬背语法规则。语法包括词法和句法两个方面,对于各种词形的变化,不但要辨认,而且要用得熟练准确,句法比词法更重要。不掌握句法就不会造句,就不能表达思想,不能运用英语达到交际目的,我觉得英语语法教学可采纳以下几点:

1. 创造条件,反复操练

这是对于初一学生来说一条行之有效的方法。学习语言主要是在用中学、学中用,教师最好少讲语法规则,不要让学生死记硬背语法,那样会框住学生,影响他们开口说英语。教师应创造条件让学生进行大量的实践活动,通过听、说、读、写的反复操练,形成一种语言习惯,达到能脱口而出的程度,在适当的时候可帮助学生自己总结出语法规则。

在学系词(am, is, are)的略缩形式时,教师可根据自己的年龄和学生的年龄编对话:

T:I’m 30.(教师自己的年龄)

T:Hello!A!(学生的名).Are you 11?

帮助学生回答:Yes, I am/No, I am not.

T:Oh, good.You’re 11.I am 30.

老师将完全形式和略缩形式分别写出,然后用等号连接起来。

2. 形象拼配,加深印象

名词的所有格是初一第一学期的重点学习内容,而且这项内容在词汇积累上也具备了较充足的训练条件。因此这个项目应当被有机地融入关于谈论和确认家庭成员的各项活动之中,名词所有格的教学形式应当是生动活泼的,这里介绍一种“形象拼配”的方法:

A.画出两组人物简图,剪出轮廓。

B.由学生A在两组中任选两个形象拼合在一处。

C.由学生B和C通过问答确认两个形象之间的关系。

如:This is Mike’s mather.

就这样,在老师的引导下,全班学生按既定的拼合谈论形象之间的关系。

如教形容词的比较等级时,可以拿三个大小不相同的东西(apple),一个比一个大。一边问,一边答:

A:What’s this?

B:It’s an apple.

A:Which is bigger?

B:The first one is bigger.

B:Which is the biggest of all?

B:The second one is the biggest of all.

这种自问自答,可以让学生跟老师重复几遍,直到他们自己能够独立进行表演为止,然后把这些句子写在黑板上,以加深学生的理解。最后可以再举一些例子,通过反复练习,学生对比较等级会有一个比较深刻的了解。

3. 绕口令

这是学习时间的表达法的比较有效的途径。如:30分以内,“分在前,点在后,Past在中间”,30分以外,“分用60减,点要加上1,用to来接连”。加上特殊教具钟演示和看钟说时间口笔竞赛活动,可以化难为易,达到省时、高效且有趣的教学效果。

4. 单项练习与综合练习相结合

单项练习,如名词复数形式的练习、介词练习、冠词练习、名词所有格练习、单项填空练习等。这些练习属于机械性练习,在初学阶段,所学甚少,常常使用这种练习。随着知识面的增加,这种练习也可采用比较灵活的形式进行练习,以增加学生练习的兴趣。如课本中的read and act,是用朗读和表演对话的形式练习语法项目的。

语法练习不能只停在单项练习上,因为单项练习很难把语言知识转化为言语技能。听、说、读、写四会能力的培养,仅靠单项语法知识是办不到的。听、说、读、写任何一项都包含着综合语言知识的运用,如“I have to stay at home.”这一句简单的英语句子就包含了代词、情态动词和介词的语言的运用,一定要在单项练习的基础上,逐步过渡到综合性的练习上。单项练习是综合练习的基础,综合练习是单项练习的提高和综合运用,两者的练习形式要紧密结合,互相补充,交替运用,以综合练习为主。

5. 设制场景,加深印象

在教学表示需要询问方向、指点方向的有关用语时,教师可以设计出几个小场景,然后引出日常交际用语,特别是在问路、指路时,如果能用大幅地图,并标出几个显著地点,效果会更佳。如在讲到walk along this road或take the fist turing的时候,教师可让学生到前面做动作示范给全班同学,然后让学生两个人一组做大量的替换练习,如:

6. 读写结合,层层深入

(3)把宾语从句改成不定式短语,这样就把读与写有机地结合在一起,层层深入地训练学生运用语言知识于实际生活的能力,体现了在交际活动中学语法的思想,效果不错。

7. 小组竞赛,激发兴趣

对于主动语态变为被动语态的练习,教师如果仅仅是按部就班地讲解,就会使学生感到枯燥无味。因此在教此语法时,可采用小组配对游戏,组织学生分组(竖排)竞赛,教师指导一、三、五行的学生说出主动语态句,二、四、六行的学生立刻将其变为被动语态。如果某行某个学生说错,必须待其纠正后该行方可继续进行,然后再让他们调换一下位置,最后教师评定,哪一行说得最准确。

一、英语教学的现状

众所周知,兴趣是学好语言的关键。英语教学要注意结合青少年的心理和生理特点,在课堂教学中加入适当的活动,充分调动学生参与的积极性,体现教师主导与学生主体作用的有效结合。英语课堂是学生习得与学习英语的主阵地,学生在活动中理解语言,运用语言,感受和领悟语言;教师通过活动呈现知识、观察学生的学习过程、判断学生学习的效果。目前,在国内中学有关英语课堂教学设计的相关研究较多,但还不够成熟和深入,还存在着较大的随意性。部分教师过于重视培养学生的学习兴趣而忽视了教学的实效性,他们把活动定义为让学生唱唱跳跳活跃起来的各种形式。把活动分离于课堂教学中的语言的输入输出。这些都是在教学活动的设计上缺乏科学性和必要性所致。

二、英语教学的实质

多年来,人们一直寻找合理的英语教学模式,那么,英语教学的实质究竟是什么呢?当代教学论一致认为:教学是教师的教与学生的学所组成的教育活动,就英语而言,教学的实质是交际。

为什么说英语教学的实质是交际呢?

(一)教学即交际

教学是师生之间的交际,是彼此之间进行思想,感情,信息交流的过程,教学的效果是双方互动的结果,也可以说:教学即交际(Teaching is of communication)。

(二)教学用交际

教学是活动,通过交际活动,学生在物质操作和思维操作上认识,掌握英语,形成运用英语的能力,也可以说,教学用交际(Teaching is by communication)。

(三)教学为交际

师生双方的认识活动是相互依存,相互作用的。学生认识英语的进展离不开教师对客观规律的认识,教师对客观规律的认识也离不开学生在教师指导下学习的客观效应。正是教学促进了这种交流,也可以说:教学为交际(Teaching is for communication)。

交际法提出交际是外语教学的目的和手段,这是外语教学发展的里程碑。

三、课堂听说交际活动的特征

交际包含“听,说,读,写”四种形式,对于他们在课堂中的具体安排,我们作了进一步的研究。一方面,我们认为:这四种形式不能决然分开,而是经常结合在一起,相辅相成;另一方面,我们也认识到,在现实生活中多数人际交流是听说交流,而传统教学模式培养出来的学生听说能力大大落后于读写能力,学了多年外语却是“聋子”,“哑巴”,这也是一个不争的事实。从全盘考虑英语教学的角度来看,听说交际能力的提高势必为良好的读写创造条件。因此,我们的观点是:听说交际活动应当作为外语教学的突破口。

英语教学中加入适当的活动,如游戏、角色表演、报告、竞赛等,有利于培养学生的兴趣,符合“乐学”原则。我们英语课堂活动的设计要适合学生年龄特点,依据所学知识的难易程度和学生的实际水平,精心设计教学活动,做到适时适度,切实可行并富有成效。除了活动的设计要有梯度,有趣味性,还必须紧紧地围绕本节课的教学目的和教学内容,并将听说读写四种基本技能的训练贯穿于其中。

那么,课堂里的听说交际活动有什么特点呢?有人认为让学生开口就算是进行交际了。其实这种观念是有失偏颇的。举个例子来说,老师先教学生被动结构,然后要求学生口头把一系列主动句改为被动句,再让学生用be done结构一一造句。这是不是交际呢?显然不是。又如,课堂中要求学生背词组,背对话,背课文,这算不算交际呢?显然也不是!事实上课堂内的听说训练分为语言能力训练和交际能力训练。前者注重掌握语言形式,后者重在实际运用,两者绝对不能等同。如果我们的听说训练一直停留在语言能力的阶段,那么就不会有真正意义上的交际和交际能力的提高。这不能不说是英语教学中一个令人遗憾的盲点。

虽然课堂中的听说交际教学需要教师花许多时间精心设计教案,可谓费时费力费心。但是如果能够通过我们的创造性劳动为学生提供一个舞台,让他们在这个舞台上充分发挥自己的创造力和想象力,运用英语进行交际,这是非常值得努力去做的。同时,我们也认为,听说交际活动使教师的角色不再局限于单纯的讲授者,而是根据需要具有了多元的特征,如:学生课堂活动的组织者,学生进行活动时的帮助者,学生表演时的观众和评价者,甚至是学生小组活动的参与者等等。师生关系发生了变化,学生真正成为了学习的主体,由此教学注入了新的内容,也更有利于教师能力的培养和开拓,真正体现出教学相长的特点。

实践证明,运用这样的思路进行英语教学,学生不仅在听说方面的交际能力大大增强,同时也促进了读写交际能力的发展,取得了较好的效果。更重要的是,学生从以前被动的听讲者转变为课堂的积极参与者,他们的主题意识在这个过程中得到了充分的尊重和强化,从而增强了主动学习的意识,提高了学习能力,增强了创新意识,培养了创造能力。这些正是素质教育的核心。
