Introducing Spring Festival

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese people and is when all family members get together, just like Christmas in the West. It originated^[起源] in the Shang Dynasty from the people’s sacrifices^[祭品] to gods and ancestors^[祖先] at the end of an old year and the beginning of a new one.

During the last ten days before Spring Festival, store owners are busy as everybody goes out to purchase^[购买] necessities for the New Year. What’s more, various decorations, new clothes and shoes for the children as well as gifts for the elderly, friends and relatives are all on the list of purchasing.

Before the New Year comes, people completely clean the inside and outside of their homes. Then they begin decorating^[装饰] their clean rooms with an atmosphere^[气氛] of joy and festivity^[欢庆]. All the door panels will be pasted with Spring Festival couplets^[对联].
