I‟m really happy to be here.Today is about celebration.And you have so much to be proud of.As you leave here to start the next leg of your journey in life, there will be days where you ask yourself, „Where is this all going?‟ „What is the purpose?‟ „What is my purpose?‟ I will be honest, I asked myself that same question and it took nearly 15 years to answer it.Maybe by talking about my journey today, I can save you some time.我真的很高兴能来到这里，今天是值得庆祝的日子，你们也应该为自己感到骄傲。当你们离开MIT走上人生新的旅途时，你们一定会不断问自己：我的路通向何方？何为目标？我的目标是什么？老实说，我也问过自己同样的问题，并花费将近15年的时间找到了答案。今天，我希望通过谈自身的经历，让各位节省一些时间。

The struggle for me started early on.In high school, I thought I discovered my life‟s purpose when I could answer that age-old question, „What do you want to be when you grow up?‟ Nope.In college I thought I‟d discover it when I could answer, „What‟s your major?‟ Not quite.I thought that maybe I‟d discovered it when I found a good job.Then I thought I just needed to get a few promotions.That didn‟t work either.我很早就有了奋斗目标。高中时，我认为只要能回答“长大后你想做什么”这种老掉牙的问题，就可以找到自己的人生目标。其实不然。在大学时，我认为只要能明确“你的专业是什么”，就可以找到答案。事实也并非如此。我还曾认为只要我找到了好工作就自然会知道答案，之后我又认为只要升职我就能找到人生目标。然而在经历这些之后，我仍未找到答案。

I kept convincing myself that it was just over the horizon, around the next corner.Nothing worked.And it was really tearing me apart.Part of me kept pushing ahead to the next achievement.And the other part kept asking, „Is this all there is?‟ I went to grad school at Duke looking for the answer.I tried meditation.I sought guidance in religion.I read great philosophers and authors.And in a moment of youthful indiscretion, I might even have experimented with a Windows PC, and obviously that didn‟t work.我不断说服自己：我的人生目标已经触手可及了，或许就在下一个拐角。然而事实是我依然没有找到它。这种沮丧几乎要将我撕成两半，一半想要我继续向前，取得更高的成就，另一半却在不断地自问：这就是你全部的人生意义吗？之后我去了杜克大学攻读硕士学位，试图在这里寻找答案——我尝试了冥想，我寻了求宗教的指引，我读了大量的哲学和文学书籍，我甚至还试验过Windows系统电脑，当然，这也没有奏效。

Of course, at that moment I don‟t know all of that.I was just grateful to have psychological burden lifted.But with the help of hindsight, my breakthrough makes a lot more sense.I was never going to find my purpose working some place without a clear sense of purpose of its own.Steve and Apple freed me to throw my whole self into my work, to embrace their mission and make it my own.How can I serve humanity? The good news is since you are here today you are on a great track.At MIT you have learned how much power that science and technology have to change the world for the better.Thanks to discoveries made right here, billions of people are leading healthier, more productive and more fulfilling lives.And if we‟re ever going to solve some of the hardest problems facing the world today, everything from cancer to climate change to educational inequality, then technology will help us to do it.But technology alone isn‟t the solution.And sometimes it‟s even part of the problem.好消息是，今天大家能在这里，说明已经有了一个不错的开始。在MIT，你们已经见识了科学与技术是如何改变世界的。正因为MIT这些伟大的发现，上亿人都过上了更加健康，高效而充实的生活。在我们解决诸如癌症，气候变化和教育不平等这些当今世界面临的最棘手的问题时，技术都能助我们一臂之力。然而，只靠技术是不能解决问题的，甚至技术本身也会成为一种问题。

Last year I had the chance to meet with Pope Francis.It was the most incredible meeting of my life.This is a man who has spent more time comforting the inflicted in slums than with heads of state.This may surprise you, but he knew an unbelievable amount about technology.It was obvious to me that he had thought deeply about it.Its opportunity.Its risks.Its morality.What he said to me at that meeting, what he preached, really, was on a topic that we care a lot about at Apple.But he expressed a shared concern in a powerful new way: Never has humanity had such power over itself, yet nothing ensures it will be used wisely, he has said.去年我有幸见到了教皇方济各。这是我人生中最不可思议的一次会面。相比于会见国家元首的时间而言，他花费了更多时间去慰藉遭受痛苦的贫民。更让人吃惊的是，教皇不但十分了解科学技术，且对于科技的理解非常深刻，如技术带来的机遇，风险，伦理挑战。在见面时他所谈论的，也正是我们苹果公司所关注的。他也用一种振聋发聩的方式表达了我们共同的担忧：人类从未拥有过如此强大的力量，但却没有任何能确保这种力量不被滥用的相应措施。

Technology today is integral to almost all aspects of our lives and most of the time it‟s a force for good.And yet the potential adverse consequences are spreading faster and cutting deeper.The threats to security, threats to privacy, fake news, and social media that becomes antisocial.Sometimes the very technology that is meant to connect us divides us.Technology is capable of doing great things.But it doesn‟t want to do great things.It doesn‟t want anything.That part takes all of us.It takes our values and our commitment to our families and our neighbors and our communities, our love of beauty and belief that all of our faiths are interconnected, our decency, our kindness.如今，科技已经渗透到我们生活的方方面面。在大多数情况下，它也都能被加以善用。然而，它潜在的负面影响也在快速传播，并且带来更深的影响，诸如安全和隐私威胁、虚假新闻，反社会的社交媒体。有时候，那些连接你我的技术反而会分裂我们。科技能够成就伟大，但科技本身并不想成就伟大，因为技术本身是没有目的的。科技的这一特点需要我们所有人为之奋斗，需要我们的时间，需要我们对家人、邻居和社区的奉献，需要我们对美的热爱，需要我们的信念、正直和善良相互联系。

I‟m not worried about artificial intelligence giving computers the ability to think like humans.I‟m more concerned about people thinking like computers without values or compassion, without concern for consequences.That is what we need you to help us guard against.Because if science is a search in the darkness, then the humanities are a candle that shows us where we‟ve been and the danger that lies ahead.我不担心人工智能能够让计算机像人类一样思考。我更担心人类像计算机一样思考——没有价值观，没有怜悯心，全然不顾后果——而这些也正是我需要你们去捍卫的东西。如果说科学就是在黑暗中探索，那么人性就是黑暗中的烛光，为我们照亮走过的路，揭露前方隐藏的危险。

Don‟t let that noise knock you off course.Don‟t get caught up in the trivial aspects of life.Don‟t listen to trolls and for God‟s sake don‟t become one.Measure your impact in humanity not in the likes, but the lives you touch;not in popularity, but in the people you serve.I found that my life got bigger when I stopped carrying about what other people thought about me.You will find yours will too.Stay focused on what really matters.There will be times when your resolve to serve humanity will be tested.Be prepared.People will try to convince you that you should keep your empathy out of your career.Don‟t accept this false premise.不要让这些杂音干扰自己。不要为生活琐事拖慢前行的节奏。不要听信那些魔鬼的话，更不要成为他们。衡量你能带给人类影响的标准，不在于点赞有多少，而在于你改善了多少人的生活；不在于你受欢迎的程度，而在于你服务了多少人。我发现，当我不再关心别人如何看待我，我的人生豁然开朗。有一天，你们也会感同身受，集中注意力于真正重要的事情。你们服务全人类的决心或许会在某个时刻受到考验，请做好准备。人们会试图说服你不要将同理心带到工作中，请不要被这种荒谬的说法误导。

At a shareholders meeting a few years back, someone questioned Apple‟s investment and focus on the environment.He asked me to pledge that Apple would only invest in green initiatives that could be justified with a return on investment.I tried to be diplomatic.I pointed out that Apple does many things, like accessibility features for those with disabilities that don‟t rely on an ROI.We do the things because they are the right thing to d, and protecting the environment is a critical example.He wouldn‟t let it go and I got my blood up.So I told him, “If you can‟t accept our position, you shouldn‟t own Apple stock.”

Thank you very much for inviting us here today.As our privilege and honor to be here, I first took advanced placement course in 1991 and I was one of the most demanding courses that I’ve ever took.When I earned my grade of 4 on my AP exam, which is one of my proudest academic moments.In 1993, I took a course while attending university campus on china history is by far my favorite course of my entire time.Normally, when I attend conferences, I’m known as the gentle men in the boat time.This conference expected I would be known as gentlemen pretending to be XXX(人名), I got here today is to explain a little bit about public universities in the United State.I have worked in public universities for 15 years at 3 different institutions so that’s the subject I know well.I presently work at Arizona Sate University.For those of you who are not familiar with Arizona Sate University.We are located in Phoenix Arizona and the easiest way to put it in perspective is we are 5 hours for Volcanoes.And we are 4 hours from Las Vegas.When Speak with the coming international students，and I asked them what they want to do other than learn While in United State.They said want to go Disney land and Los Vegas.ASU offers more than 650 undergraduate and graduate degree programs in 17 colleges and schools.And I will explain how important that is to public university admission process when you are applying to American public universities, you are most often making an application to a very specific program.So the admission standards will be different depending on the program which you are applying.But let’s take a step back and introduce you to the public university system within United States and speak them because it’s different that I would understand the university system in China to be.Fir stable, public universities are only partially funded by the States government within United States.There are very few national or federal funded institutions or federal governments will provide funding to individuals students to attend universities.And there are few municipal funded or charged universities.Which is to say, a municipality or a city would fund institutions in part of learning.The public university system in US is very diverse.There is no one way we all determine admissions rather a collective and individuals how we approach things.I’m going to spend my time today using a Arizona State University as an example of one type public university applying process.It is what we call it objective review meaning that we will review a student’s academic records but we do not require letter of reference.We do not require an essay.That’s one of the distinction between the several colleges we speak today.A quick note.This table being displayed is from the report of reference several times here this morning.This is from the IIE open doors report.This is the top 15 American universities by total international in the roll.I placed blue arrows next to public universities.So you can see the ten of the top 15 American universities for international in roll in public.One goal is there.Let’s guess what that is.The objective review of the American admission process simply means that we are looking at 2 criteria for admission.The first criteria would be performance in your high school or your transfer institution.And we will convert your grade point average to the American scale.The traditional American scale is a 4 point of your point average.And your applying as first time fleshment and we convert your point average to 3.0 or higher.You have met academic requirements in order to be admitted to Arizona Sate university.As this

近年来,很多学者开始研究英语公众演讲,大部分的研究都是侧重于英语公众演讲的文体特征正式程度和语义特征。然而从评价理论框架下对英语公众演讲的态度资源研究却很少有学者涉及。笔者试图以评价系统理论为框架,选取2016年奥斯卡影帝马特·达蒙在麻省理工毕业典礼演讲致辞为语料,对演讲语篇的态度资源采取定性和定量分析。

二、理论综述

评价理论是以韩礼德系统功能语言学人际功能为基础,是对其进行的延伸和发展。评价理论旨在挖掘语言背后的意识形态,对其进行评价,来确立语篇中的人际意义。评价系统包含三大部分:态度系统、介入系统和级差系统。其中,态度系统是评价理论的核心。自评价理论创立以来备受诸多学者的关注。态度系统主要包括情感、鉴赏和判定三个子系统,这三个子系统主要是从词汇层面来理解和分析语篇中的人际意义。

三、语料分析

根据笔者统计,奥斯卡影帝马特·达蒙在麻省理工毕业典礼演讲致辞中一共有94处态度资源,具体特征如下表:

从表1可以看出,在马特·达蒙的演讲中,情感资源和鉴赏资源出现频率最高,而判定资源出现的频率较低。

1、情感资源

情感资源包括高兴/不高兴,安全/不安全,满意/不满意和倾向/非倾向四个子系统。其中,积极情感与消极情感分布如表2:

由表2数据可知,情感资源积极面所占比重最大,占情感资源总数的94%,而消极面的情感资源仅占6%。笔者发现演讲者倾向于使用积极面的情感资源,听众乐于去倾听,2016年6月3日是麻省理工学院第150届毕业典礼,作为全美乃至全世界顶尖高校与科研界的标杆之一。马特·达蒙使用了很多积极的态度资源表达自己对此届毕业生最真挚的祝愿和期盼。运用积极的态度资源鼓励毕业生要直面自己选择的问题,希望毕业生放下一切,去解决这个问题。

2、判定

判定是指对人的行为的评价。判定资源在此演讲语篇中共出现14次,占态度资源的14.8%。判定分为社会许可和社会尊严两个子系统。社会许可是指可靠性和正当性,而社会尊严则包括常规、能力和韧性。其分布情况如下表:

由表3可以看出,积极判定资源所占判定资源的85.7%,而消极判定资源只占14.2%。社会评判对社会网络关系的形成起着非常重要的作用,常用于口头文化的交流,而社会约束则主要是用于书面文化交流。他运用大量的积极判定资源表明教育应永不停止,要学会不断地倾听。毕业并不代表你从接收者的身份就变成了一位传播者,教育是需要终生学习的,呼吁毕业生不要停止学习。无论毕业后从事什么,都要学会去倾听,尤其是要倾听那些你并不赞同的人的发生。这样,你的人生才会更加美好。展望每个毕业生都有一个美好光明的未来。

3、鉴赏资源

鉴赏是指对事物价值的评价。鉴赏包括三个子范畴:我们对事物的反应,事物本身的组成以及事物本身的价值。在此演讲语篇中,鉴赏资源具体分布如下表:

如表4所示,鉴赏资源共出现30次,积极鉴赏资源所占鉴赏资源的83.3%,在此演讲中马特·达蒙告诉2016届毕业生,这是你们的时刻,一切都属于你们。我们今天的世界充满了挑战,但是我们都很幸运,希望毕业生能抛弃一切,勇敢并带有信心的直面我们内心的选择。

四、结语

本文从评价理论的视角对演讲语篇的态度资源进行定性和定量分析,发现积极的态度资源要远远超过消极态度资源的使用。演讲者使用大量积极的态度资源拉近与听者的距离,鼓励毕业生勇往直前。本文丰富了评价理论对演讲语篇的研究,但研究还需更进一步深入。

i do remember very clearly is writing it by hand, draft after draft afterdraft.typewriters were very expensive and my family could not afford one.i was one of two kids from baldwin county that was ofsegregation.he pitted whites against blacks, the south against the north, the working class againstthe socalled elites.meeting my governor was not an honor for me.so i had to figure out for myself what was right and true.it was a search.it was a process.it drewon the moral sense that id learned from my parents, and in church, and in my own heart, and ledme on my own journey of discovery.i found books in the public library that they probably didntknow they had.they all pointed to the fact that wallace was wrong.that injustices likesegregation had no place in our world.that equality is a right.as i said, i was only 16 when i met governor wallace, so i shook his hand as we were expected todo.but shaking his hand felt like a betrayal of my own beliefs.it felt wrong.like i was selling a pieceof my soul.i knew who i was in my personal life, and i kept my eye on my north star, my responsibility to dogood for someone else, other than myself.but at work, well i always figured that work was work.values had their place and, yes, there were things that i wanted to change about the world, but ithought i had to do that on my own time.not in the office.steve didnt see it that way.he was anidealist.and in that way he reminded me of how i felt as a teenager.in that first meeting heconvinced me if we worked hard and made great products, we too could help change the world.and to my surprise, i was hooked.i took the job and changed my life.its been 17 years and ihave never once looked back.at apple we believe the work should be more than just about improving your own self.its 恭喜你们，也恭喜前来参加典礼的你们的家人和朋友，你们成功了！作为荣誉校友，我无比荣耀地站在这里，和你们共度这一生中最难忘的时光。

在演讲开始之前，校方要求我做一个例行说明，想必你们都知道，就是将手机调成静音模式。因此，请你们保持手机静音。如果你们用的是苹果手机，请把它调到静音模式；如果你们用的不是苹果手机，请把手机传到中间的过道上，参加苹果公司的世界级回收项目。

大家都知道，这里是个令人惊叹的地方。我很确信，对于你们来说，之所以选择来华盛顿，是因为这里是美国民主政治的中心。这个地方有着强大的吸引力。在这里，马丁·路德·金曾挑战美国人，为真正实现对民主的承诺，为每个上帝的儿女实现真正的公平。

也是在这里，里根总统号召我们，要相信自己，相信我们能成就一番事业。在今天这样一个特别的早晨，我想与你们分享我第一次来这里的经历。1977年的夏天，那年我才16岁，还是个小男生，刚读完高中二年级，住在老家阿拉巴马州的罗伯茨代尔小镇。也就在那时，我在由国家乡村电力协会（National Rural Electric Association）赞助的作文比赛中获奖。至于作文的内容，我已经很模糊了，唯一让我记忆犹新的便是那一份份不断修改的手写稿。那个年代，打印机有点贵，我们家买不起。

我生命中的英雄是强烈反对华莱士支持种族隔离制度的马丁·路德·金和罗伯特·肯尼迪（Robert F.Kennedy）。要知道，在我出生和成长的地方，马丁·路德·金和罗伯特·肯尼迪都没有得到相应的尊重。在我小的时候，美国南方仍然在篡改历史，我学习的教科书上甚至说美国内战是一场各州争取权利的战争，课本中很少提及奴隶制度。

因此，我自己必须学会明辨是非。当然，这也是一种探索，一个过程。我从父母和教堂那里获悉的，以及发自肺腑的道德观念都指引我走向属于我自己的探索之路。我从公共图书馆找到了那些可能连他们自己都不知道会有的藏书，而这些藏书全部都证明华莱士是错的。种族隔离制度在世界上没有立足之地。平等是一种权利。

因此，去寻找你的北极星，让它指导你的工作和生活，亦或你一生奉献的事业。但我现在怀疑，你们其中的一些人对此不感兴趣，没关系，我不会往心里去的。有质疑精神是正常的，尤其是在华盛顿。在如今这个年代，你们有充足的理由怀疑。一定数量的良性的怀疑是好的，但怀疑太过频繁，就会使人变得愤世嫉俗。愤世嫉俗的人会怀疑任何人说的任何事，他们会怀疑说话者的初衷和人格。不过，如果你努力寻找的话，可以证明他们真的正在说谎。或许，这就是我们生活的世界。但是，毕业生们，这也是你们要改变的世界。
