小学英语教学的目的是激发学生学习英语的兴趣,培养学生学习英语的积极态度,使之建立起学习英语的自信心, 以便更好地为以后的英语学习打下良好的基础。通过在小学英语教学中的摸索,笔者发现小小的一个英文名字能发挥很大的作用。
一、 尊重学生个性,让他们自己取英文名字
按照惯例,英语第一堂课,老师会给班上的每个学生起英文名字。但为了尊重和彰显每个孩子的个性,笔者要求学生自己给自己取英文名字,必要时可以请家长帮忙。任务布置后,结果出乎意料。学生的英文名字五花八门,个性十足,问及理由更是千奇百怪。学生普遍反映,中文名基本是父母或长辈取的, 自己没有选择的权利,而英文名可以自己起,这种感觉真好。如果名字是老师给他起的,他未必接受,自己取的不管叫什么,因为表达了自己的意愿,都是十分乐意的,而且记忆深刻、富有意义。在自己取英文名字的过程中,学生初步和英语亲密接触了一下,体验到了英语带给自己的乐趣,从而对英语学习产生浓厚的兴趣。
二、直呼英文名字,拉近师生关系,让学生融入 到英语世界里
古人云:“亲其师而信其道。”小学生学习英文的兴趣跟任课教师有着很大的关系。他们喜欢一位教师,也往往会喜欢他的课,并能主动接受这位教师所传授的知识。这种喜欢是一种潜移默化、润物无声式的培育。因此,笔者认为,激发和培养小学生英语学习兴趣最重要的一方面是, 让学生对英语教师感兴趣。师生间直呼名字,让学生觉得与众不同,不仅充分体现西方国家的文化习惯,而且融洽了师生间的关系。每个学生都有属于自己的英文名字,不但会给他们带来无限乐趣, 而且一个好听好记的英文名字还能让他们有与众不同的感觉, 不仅增强学习英语的兴趣,也便于渲染英语学习的氛围。
三、巧用英文名字,活跃课堂气氛,集中学生注 意力
良好的课堂氛围能产生一种具有感染性、催人上进的情境,使学生受到感化和熏陶,产生情感上的共鸣,从而集中注意力,认真听讲,进而达到教学的真正目的。铃声响起,学生陆续进入课堂,身心还没有完全从下课轻松的状态进入到课堂中来, 利用有关英文名字的小活动, 可以让学生们很快意识到英语学习时间到了,该专注并振作起来了。例如,通过歌曲《两只老虎》的曲调,老师唱“Where is Andy? Where is Andy?”名叫“Andy”的同学站起来回应“Here I am.Here I am.”每个学生都坐得端端正正, 想通过自己良好的表现,引起老师的注意,受到大家的关注,参与到英语教学活动中来。同时,还可以通过一些小活动, 如老师拍手说“H-E-L-L-O,this is Cherry say‘hello’”。选中一名学生,和其双手击掌, 依次传递下去。这种课堂互动活动,学生们都非常乐意参与,可以在较短的时间内把学生拉进课堂,同时也活跃了英语教学的课堂气氛。
四、 利用英文名字进行教学活动, 培养学生自 信心

家里面出个博士，大概是一件挺值得炫耀的事罢？大学时代得知，近代学术大师胡适，除了1927年在哥伦比亚大学获得的博士学位外，一生中还获颁35个（荣誉）博士学位，法学27个，文学7个，人文学1个。所以，胡适一生共有36个博士学位，羡煞读书人。经典美剧《Friends》里有一幕，主人公之一的Ross Galer介绍自己时，他的父亲要求他必须说：Dr. Ross Galer，以显光荣。台湾作家李敖在称呼他女儿李文时，也总喜欢叫她：Dr. Hedy Lee。
我绕了一个大圈，才提到一个女博士。这位女博士的形象，大抵比较符合“女博士”在大家心中的印象：博学、强势，不结婚。可Dr. Hedy Lee毕竟是美国人，且还是狂狷的李敖大师之女，所以世人或许还比较能够理解和接受她。其他女博士的命运，就不如李文博士这么“幸运”了。
我小时候对女博士没什么概念，只能从旁人的眼神中感受一点“异样”的气息。高中在浙江西南某小城市。那时候全校老师中学历最高的，是个姓丁的女硕士。身边的同学和老师，就礼貌地称呼她为“丁硕”。表面上是尊敬，但反过来想，其实早已不把她当正常人看待，划一条线，将她搁置在对岸，才能略觉自己安全。因此，这实际上是另一种歧视。我亦难以想象，当时倘若有个女博士在学校里，众人（男老师）更要惊恐成什么模样。
上大学后，老师里有个女博士后，所有同学都讨厌她，我也是。但我讨厌她，不是因为“女博士后”的头衔，而是她教书的方式。女博士后上课的方式像教小学生，要我们上课看课本。
有次她又故伎重施，我偏偏拿出一本别的书看。她走到我身边说：“你为什么不看课本？”我说：“课本我已经看过了，上课时间这么宝贵，怎么能用来看课本？”她说：“你看过，但都记住了吗？”我说：“课本上有的东西，记住干什么？翻翻书就找到了。”她说：“那好，我待会儿问问其他同学，看他们同不同意你的观点。”我摆出一幅很高傲的样子说：“老师，这不是我的观点，是爱因斯坦的观点。”女博士后被我说得哑口无言，只好作罢，自然也没有叫其他同学评价我的观点。再后来，我们全班“罢课”，把这位老师赶走，此是后话，不赘述了。
我说这段往事，绝不是为了说明自己讨厌女博士（后），而是说我讨厌僵化的教学模式。实际上，其他老师也都被我“教训”过。有个教古代文学史的老师，每堂课前都要抽背古诗，我也觉得受到“小学生”的待遇──大学生应该自主学习，怎能强迫呢？后来我就跟这老师说：“请不要把我们搞得像小学生一样。”老师很“识相”，当堂课就宣布今后不再抽背，同学欢欣雀跃。巧合的是，这老师也是个女博士。
女博士有什么特殊的吗？没有。我生性喜欢随和、变通的人，不喜欢跟过于强势、僵化的人打交道，无论什么性别、什么学历，就算只是小学毕业，你用那样的方式上课，我照样反对。有时候我们讨厌一个人，惯于将其标签化。遇到一个令你不悦的女博士，就说所有女博士都不惹人喜欢。
为什么我们很自然地一棒子打翻一船人？因为我们都不善思考，不善将千万个人当作千万个人来看待，而用标签把一堆人往框子里一扔。
可问题总没有那么简单的。当一个活生生的女博士站在你面前，和你说话，和你共事，甚至和你恋爱的时候。理智的你会发现，过去任何固有的印象，这时全都作废。你势必要从头到脚，从里到外去认识这个人。然后你会发现，她的名字原来不叫“女博士”，女博士不是一种人。
是否将来我们也要像为了尊重别人，不问别人的年龄、收入一样，不要轻率地询问别人的学历呢？慢慢地你会惊讶地发现，被誉为“电视良心”的央视主持人柴静，也只是个学士而已。

Critics applaud Kingston for her strong feminist voice and her ability to battle social and racial injustices through her use of words in The Woman Warrior.In the Dictionary of Literary Biography, Pin-chia Feng calls Kingston"one of the most outspoken contemporary feminist writers"and a"word warrior."Critics also credit Kingston's expertise for translating stories told in oral form into written stories that maintain the unique characteristics of the Cantonese dialect that is spoken in her community.She does a thorough job of telling about a Chinese-American girl's growing up and being torn between Chinese traditions and American customs.Through a combination of myth and reality, she uncovers the Chinese tradition of male dominance and female oppression, and a Chinese-American girl's battle against it.In a Washington Post Book World review, William McPherson describes The Woman Warrior as"a strange, sometimes savagely terrifying and, in the literal sense, wonderful story of growing up caught between two highly sophisticated and utterly alien cultures, both vivid, often menacing and equally mysterious."Yet Kingston also builds the less-alien image of an important, though seldom-voiced, strength in ties between a Chinese-American girl and her mother.A good example of the result of a modern-thinking Chinese mother's influence on her Chinese-American daughters occurs at the end of Moon Orchid's story, At the Western Palace, in The Woman Warrior.Kingston writes, "Brave Orchid's daughters decided fiercely that they would never let men be unfaithful to them.All her children made up their minds to major in science or mathematics."Kingston's blend of legend and personal truths results in a work so unique that it is difficult to classify as fiction or nonfiction, biographical or autobiographical.Paul Gray says in Time, "Art has intervened here.The stories may or may not be transcripts of actual experience."
In the novel, The Woman Warrior, addresses several themes including the relationship of boys vs.girls in the Chinese culture, the process of naming, a warrior spirit within women, ghosts as representative of people, the symbolism of talk-stories, and the significance of a voice for speaking as well as writing.While Kingston explores these various themes, she also incorporates her own memoir and testimony.As a Chinese-American, she reveals the complex duality of an identity shaped by two cultures.As a woman, she reveals her fears and struggle to maintain her freedom, along with her desire to earn love from her Mother.As a writer, she reveals a voice she constantly silenced during her youth—a voice which empowers not only her own identity through writing, but also acknowledges the identity and existence of an aunt who dared to be an individual.
2 Two Different Roots
2.1 Assertiveness vs submissiveness
In The Woman Warrior, No Name Aunt and Hua Mu Lan appear as polar opposites, two different roots for Kingston's memoir.Hua Mu Lan acts as the aggressive hero and No Name Aunt the timid victim.Hua Mu Lan's character is aggressive while No Name Woman seems submissive.Kingston writes that the latter"obeyed him;she always did as she was told" (Kingston 6) .Here Kingston describes No Name Woman's subservient attitude towards the father of her child.Critic E.D.Huntley, agrees when he writes, "embodied in[No Name Woman is]passivity, silence, lack of agency, and ultimately, the status of victim" (86) .This characterization establishes No Name Woman as submissive.In contrast, Hua Mu Lan has a very aggressive attitude.The Woman Warrior, Hua Mu Lan"is an ambitious young woman, motivated by her own need to prove herself...taking pleasure in battles well-fought and strategy cunningly conceived" (Huntley 98) .Therefore, Hua Mu Lan's assertiveness and ambition opposes No Name Woman's submissiveness.
2.2 Hero vs victim
Moreover, No Name Woman plays the victim while Hua Mu Lan acts as a hero.Wendy Ho takes an approach similar to Huntley's when she states, "Maxine has...models of lost, traumatized women:[for example, ]No Name Woman" (133) .No Name Woman demonstrates victim status when she thinks"they've hurt me too much, " (14) after the villagers destruct her house.Ho's criticism and No Name Woman's thoughts help establish her the victim.In contrast, Hua Mu Lan plays the hero.Hua Mu Lan says, "From the words on my back, and how they were fulfilled, the villagers would make a legend about my perfect filiality" (45) .Furthermore, "She wins the love and respect of her family and community as a powerful warrior" (Ho 134) .Hua Mu Lan's successes in battle earn her esteem and the hero title, displaying opposition to No Name Woman's victim status.However, when one looks below the surface similarities appear between the two women.Hua Mu Lan and No Name Woman both become fictional tales, challenge the female gender role, share experiences and develop into role models.
3 Similarities in Fictional Tales
3.1 Similar as fictional characters
Hua Mu Lan and No Name Aunt are fictional characters.In a critical essay on Kingston, Huntley writes, "The woman warrior is comprised of substantial chunks of fiction, as well as clear indications that Kingston is creatively constructing her versions of events" (79) .This quote exemplifies how fiction is evident in the Woman Warrior, proving her a fantasy.Furthermore, critic Debra Shostak says Kingston"appropriates the revenge fantasy of Hua Mu Lan for herself, transforming the community's legend into a first-person account" (59) .Thus, Hua Mu Lan is clearly a fantasy.Unclear however, is No Name Woman's fictional status.Kingston's mother tells her the story of No Name Aunt.The mother says, "In 1924...your father and...your aunt's new husband sailed for America" (3) .The use of language, dates and details make her story appear real, but below the surface the story is a fantasy told through talk-story.According to Kingston, talk-story is used to pass down legends and life lessons from generation to generation.This passage through generations changes and filters the tales.In an interview Kingston declares that these changes happen"according to the needs of the listener...to the needs of the day, the interest of the time, so that the story can be different from day to day" (Cheung 85) .Through continuous changes and additions No Name Aunt becomes a fantasy, like Hua Mu Lan.Also, Kingston alters her version from her mother's, further proving No Name Woman fictional.Shostak agrees that, "In No Name Woman of the opening chapter Kingston makes visible her process of revising raw material to suit her interests.She transforms her mother's memory into several wildly divergent stories" (58) Even Kingston alters No Name Woman's story, further proving its fictional nature.Understanding the similarity of Hua Mu Lan and No Name Woman as fictional stories helps the reader grasp a larger theme in Kingston's novel.Kingston struggles with her role as a woman, and through the fictional tales of Hua Mu Lan and No Name Woman she is able to express these frustrations and defy the female gender norm.
3.2 Similar in challenging gender roles
No Name Woman and Hua Mu Lan are similar in how they challenge gender roles in society.Women in Chinese culture are considered inferior, and Kingston struggles with this throughout her memoir and life.Huntley agrees that, "Kingston retells the legend of Hua Mu Lan as a strategy for examining and challenging the construction of gender roles in patriarchal society" (95) Cheung concurs that Kingston, "Declares open warfare against her Chinese female identity"throughout her novel (84) .For instance, Hua Mu Lan defies her gender role when she disguises herself as a man in battle.Kingston writes, "I never told them the truth.Chinese executed women who disguised themselves as soldiers or students, no matter how bravely they fought" (39) .Therefore, Hua Mu Lan challenges her role as a woman when disguising herself for battle.Like Hua Mu Lan, No Name Aunt also challenges the female gender role.Huntley explains, "No Name Woman introduces the unidentified aunt who represents the fate of transgressive women in traditional china" (77) .No Name Woman defies her role when she conceives an illegitimate child and later commits suicide.Both Hua Mu Lan and No Name Woman challenge the norm of the obedient female housewife.In addition both characters use the power of silence to supersede gender inequality.Huntley writes, "No Name Aunt maintains total silence throughout the months of her ordeal...[and]dies without a word" (87) .In comparison, "Hua Mu Lan can exercise her power only when she disguises herself as a man" (Cheung 87) .In both situations, the women remain silent because of their inferior gender.They both use silence to achieve some level of dignity in defying their gender role, displaying again how they relate to one another.Hua Mu Lan must'silence'her gender in order to fight in war No Name Woman must endure a'silent'pregnancy and death because she defied her role as wife.Their similarities in gender role defiance aide the reader in understanding Kingston's struggle as a woman.
3.3 Similar in pregnancies and struggles
Next, Hua Mu Lan and No Name Woman parallel each other with their pregnancies and struggles.While giving birth No Name Woman gets"to her feet to fight better...and climbs over the fence[to kneel]in the dirt" (Kingston 14) .Hua Mu Lan"hid from battle only once, when[she]gave birth to[her]baby" (40) Regardless of tough circumstances both women took whatever actions were necessary to give birth, seeking hiding places to give birth.No Name Woman and Hua Mu Lan share similar birth experiences, which displays how they mirror one another.Kingston incorporates the stories of No Name Woman and Hua Mu Lan into lessons that apply to her life.
3.4 Similar in displaying role model traits
Each woman plays a part in shaping the person Kingston grows up to be.Kingston"reads herself into existence through the stories her culture tells about women...the stories become her pretexts for self invention" (Cheung 84) .Cheung explains how Kingston puts herself in No Name Woman and Hua Mu Lan's minds to apply their lessons to her life.Kingston learns a valuable lesson from No Name Aunt and Hua Mu Lan.Wendy Ho explains, "talk story becomes a courageous act that leads to transformation and discovery, to the inscriptions of self" (135) .This helps demonstrate similarities between Hua Mu Lan and No Name Aunt because Kingston uses them in developing who she wants to be and how to get there.Also, No Name Aunt and Hua Mu Lan are both considered role models for Kingston.Role models are women who, "act, who take control of their circumstances and shape their lives" (Huntley 86) .Both characters display role model traits.To command an army, Hua Mu Lan takes control of her circumstances as a female and disguises herself as a man.No Name Woman controlled her situation when she voluntarily committed suicide and plugged up the family well.Together Hua Mu Lan and No Name Woman display leadership and bravery to achieve role model status.Therefore, understanding how No Name Woman and Hua Mu Lan are both role models helps the reader to see the development of Kingston's personality.
