一、学生四级写作中存在的问题

目前一些考生英语作文水平较差, 无法达到学十几年英语应该达到的水平。主要是考生缺乏写作基础知识, 英语语言基本功差, 不扎实, 不能清楚地表达自己的思想, 作文中的语法错误屡见不鲜。更严重的是许多考生只是把相应的英语单词根据汉语的思想概念一个一个译出来, 造成作文语义不连贯, 语言表达模糊不清, 前后照应欠缺, 从而使文章显得混乱无章。如:

通过以上两个个例子, 可以看出, 考生全然不顾句子的前后搭配, 不顾主谓是否一致, 不顾动词时态是否一致, 只是把英语单词一个萝卜一个坑地填入事先设置好的中文框框里, 结果写出的英语句子不伦不类, 以致在短文中出现许多中国式的“英语”, 被同行们戏称为“chinglish”。

作文不理想的原因很多, 总的看来主要有以下几个方面的问题。

1.词汇量太小, 缺乏合理的搭配

它包括定冠词和不定冠词的滥用, 主谓不一致, 单复数搞不清楚, 时态和语态混乱及词语的各种形式掌握不牢。如:大多数大学生经常乐于在写作中使用的“学习知识”, 就用“learn knowledge”来表达。而正确的用法是acquire/get knowledge。又如:谈到浓咖啡时用strong coffee, 而淡咖啡用的是weak coffee, 但是谈到浓汤和清汤时却用thick soup和thin soup。这些搭配都能为以英语为母语的使用者所接受, 但对非本族语使用者而言, 造成学习上的困难。正因为如此, 学生在学习和使用英语搭配时常感到困惑, 无规律可循, 出现写作搭配失误就在所难免。

2.缺少有步骤、有计划的训练教学

写作不是一件很容易的事情, 英文写作的教学内容很多, 有句子写作、段落写作、文章写作几部分。四级考试的写作可以说是段落写作, 段落写作要求写出的段落具有统一性、连贯性, 要靠平时有步骤、有计划的训练。但在大学英语教学中, 写作并不是作为一门独立的课程来开设, 而是作为精读教材的附带部分散插在各课练习中, 这使写作内容支离破碎, 缺乏系统的结构框架。课堂教学活动以教师讲授语法、词汇等语言知识为主, 很少留给学生进行写作训练, 部分教师只是把它当作一般作业, 布置给同学课下去完成。根据调查我们知道, 学生课外花在练习写作的时间非常少, 90%以上的学生课外选择听力和阅读练习, 只有极少数学生做些英语写作练习。从调查结果看, 大多数学生对写作很不重视, 这或许是学生作文很难提高的重要原因之一。

二、提高英语四级写作教学的途径和方法

1.加强阅读

阅读是写作的基础, 为写作提供所要表达的内容和语言材料, 是语言输入的重要途径之一。美国作家德尔文·G·舒伯特在《Reading Is Writing》一文中指出, 教科书所编写的阅读文章是写作素材的集散地, 是语言现象的展示厅, 是语法规则的剖析室, 是文章体裁的示范本。大量阅读有助于学生了解英语国家的文化背景, 有助于巩固和扩大学生词汇量, 提高学生的阅读能力, 培养语感, 为成功的写作奠定必要的基础。阅读包括借助教科书中的阅读材料、课外阅读和诵读等。如在学习《新视野大学英语读写教程》第一册第八单元Section A 《Birth of Bright Ideas》一文时, 利用文中三个事例的相互对比而突出主题、讲解其结构与写作特点, 随后, 再进行仿写练习。这样学生在掌握教材原有知识、篇章结构的同时, 也掌握了某些写作技能与技巧, 提高书面表达能力。这样写出的文章才能更为有血有肉、丰富多彩, 而不会用汉语的思维、英语的词汇, 依靠语法编造句子了。针对学生语言输入严重不足, 要求学生充分利用现有的精、泛读材料, 将里边出现的优美的词句熟记或背诵, 引导学生在阅读过程中摘抄优美句子、短文进行诵读, 并鼓励学生将所学所记的新词、句型及精美词句用于写作。如遇到优秀的篇章或段落时, 提示学生研究作者的写作思路和思想内容, 帮助学生分析课文的写作方法和技巧, 欣赏其表达法及遣词造句的优美和准确, 并在自己的写作中加以模仿和运用。如此读读写写、写写读读, 学生的写作水平很快就提高了。

2.说写结合

斐斯泰洛奇说过“技巧和能力唯有通过实际应用才能发展”, 表达的技巧和能力是通过读、说、写等的活动得到发展的。在写作教学中, 学生通过参与讨论, 说写相结合, 提高对词汇应用、文章结构和写作技巧的认识, 可以在一定程度上缓解他们紧张感, 减少对写作的恐惧, 学到一些写作技巧和方法。要提高写作能力, 关键的就是督促学生不断地写, 通过写发现存在的语言问题并培养学生对写作的兴趣, 使学生从“要我写”, 转变为“我要写”, 使学生认识到像学游泳一样, 要学会游, 就必须多游、多练。而我们的大学英语教学却忽视了这点, 目前最大弊端就是学生练得太少。因此, 学生常常发现, 平常似乎读得滚瓜烂熟的句子, 写作时怎么也用不出来。说写结合的方法给学生提供了两次学习、提高写作水平的机会, 即修改他人作文和根据他人意见修改自己的作文, 有助于提高学生的写作水平。

3.教会学生写作的技巧

四级作文题材可分为两大类:贴近大学生的学习和课余生活的校园题材;有关社会变化、发展和进步的热点话题。四级作文体裁可分为四大类:议论文、说明性议论文、叙事性议论文和应用文。2003年6月以来, 应用文的比例越来越大。四级作文的常见命题形式有三种:提纲式命题作文、提纲式图表作文和情景+提纲式命题应用文。近年来的四级作文试题往往不是单一类型的, 而是表现为结合两种或三种命题形式的综合型提纲式作文。针对上述情况, 我们应该教会学生审题的技巧, 教会学生怎样做到使文章连贯通顺, 教会学生做到语法正确, 教会学生做到语言规范, 教会学生怎样做到切题的方法。同时教会学生卷面整洁、字数达标、文体统一、主题突出、文字连贯、内容一致、词语多样、语言流畅、首尾呼应、检查到位 (拼写、语法) 。
