Now, I’ve given a lot of speeches about education。 And I’ve talked about responsibility a lot。I’ve talked about teachers’ responsibility for inspiring students and pushing you to learn。I’ve talked about your parents’ responsibility for making sure you stay on track, and you get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with the Xbox。I’ve talked a lot about your government’s responsibility for setting high standards, and supporting teachers and principals,

and turning around schools that aren’t working, where students aren’t getting the opportunities that they deserve。

But at the end of the day, we can have the most dedicated teachers, the most supportive parents, the best schools in the world -- and none of it will make a difference, none of it will matter unless all of you fulfill your responsibilities, unless you show up to those schools, unless you pay attention to those teachers, unless you listen to your parents and grandparents and other adults and put in the hard work it takes to succeed。 That’s what I want to focus on today: the responsibility each of you has for your education。

I want to start with the responsibility you have to yourself。 Every single one of you has something that you’re good at。 Every single one of you has something to offer。 And you have a responsibility to yourself to discover what

that is。 That’s the opportunity an education can provide。Maybe you could be a great writer -- maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper -- but you might not know it until you write that English paper -- that English class paper that’s assigned to you。

Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor -- maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine -- but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class。 Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice -- but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team。And no matter what you want to do with your life, I guarantee that you’ll need an education to do it。 You want to be a doctor, or a teacher, or a police officer? You want to be a nurse or an architect, a lawyer or a member of our military?

You’re going to need a good education for every single one of those careers。

You cannot drop out of school and just drop into a good job。 You’ve got to train for it and work for it and learn for it。And this isn’t just important for your own life and your own future。 What you make of your education will decide nothing less than the future of this country。 The future of America depends on you。 What you’re learning in school today will determine whether we as a nation can meet our greatest challenges in the future。You’ll need the knowledge and problem-solving skills you learn in science and math to cure diseases like cancer and AIDS, and to develop new energy technologies and protect our environment。

You’ll need the insights and critical-thinking skills you gain in history and social studies to fight poverty and homelessness, crime and discrimination,

and make our nation more fair and more free。 You’ll need the creativity and ingenuity you develop in all your classes to build new companies that will create new jobs and boost our economy。We need every single one of you to develop your talents and your skills and your intellect so you can help us old folks solve our most difficult problems。 If you don’t do that -- if you quit on school -- you’re not just quitting on yourself, you’re quitting on your country。

Hello,chicago.

If there is anyone out there who still doubts that American is a place where all things are possible, who still wonders if the dream of our founders is alive in our time, who still questions the power of our democracy, tonight is your answer.

It’s the answer told by lines that streched around schools and chrches in numbers this nation has never seen,by people who waited three hours and four hours, many for the first time in their lives, because belived that this time must be different, that their voices could be that difference.

It’s the answer spoken by young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, blackandwhite,Hispanic, asian, native, american, gay, straight, Disabled and disabled .Americans who sent a message to the word that

we have never been just a collection of individuals or a collection of red states and blue states.

We are,and always will be, the United States of America.

It’s the answer that led those who’ve been told for so long by so many to be cynical and fearful and doubtful aboutwhatwe can achieve to put their hands on the arc of history and bend it once more toward the hope of a bettter day.

It’s been a long time coming ,but tonight ,because ofwhat we did on this date in this election at this defining moment change has come to America.

A little bit earlier this evening,I received an exraodinarily gracious call

from Sen .mcCain

Sen.mccain fought long and hard in this campaign. And he’s fought even longer and harder for the country that he loves. He has endured sacrifices for America that most of us cannot begin to imagine. We are better off for service rendered by this brave and selfless leader.

I congratulate him;I congratulate Gov.Pain for all that they’ve achieved,And I look forward to working with them to renew this nation’s promise in the months ahead.

I want to thank my partner in this journey,a man who campaigned from his heart, and spoken for the men and women he grew upwith on the streets of Scrantion and rode with on the train home to Delaware, the vice president-elect of the United States,Joe biden.

And I would not be standing here tonight without the unyielding support of my best friend for the last 16 years the rock of our family, the love of my life, the nation’s next first lady michelle obama.

Sasha and malia I love you both more than you can imagine. And you have earned the new puppy that’s coming with us to the new White House.

And while she’s no longer with us, I know my grandmother’s watching, along with the family that made me who I am .I miss them tonight,I know that my debt to them is beyond is measure.

To many sister maya,my sister Alma, all my other brother and sister ,thank you so much for all the support that you’ve given me,I am grateful to them.

And to my compaign manager,David plouffe,,the unsung hero of this campaign, who built the best –the best political campaign,I think ,in the history of the United states of America.

To my chief strategist David Axelrod who’s been a partner with me every step of the way.

To the best campaign team ever assembled in the history of politics you made this happen, and I am forever grateful for what you’ve sacrificed to get it done.

But above all,I wiil never forget who this victory truly belongs to.It belongs to you, It belongs to you .

I was never the likeliest candidate for this office .We didn’t start with much money or many endorsements .our campaign was not hatched in the halls of washington .It began in the backyards of Des Moine and the living rooms of Concord and the front porches of Charleston.I was built by working men and women with dug into what little savings they

had to give $5 and $10 and $20 to thecause

美联英语提供:奥巴马就职演讲稿(中英文对照)4 It is now our generation’s task to carry on what those pioneers began. For our journey is not complete until our wives, our mothers, and daughters can earn a living equal to their efforts. Our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law – for if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another must be equal as well. Our journey is not complete until no citizen is forced to wait for hours to exercise the right to vote. Our journey is not complete until we find a better way to welcome the striving, hopeful immigrants who still see America as a land of opportunity; until bright young students and engineers are enlisted in our workforce rather than expelled from our country. Our journey is not complete until all our children, from the streets of Detroit to the hills of Appalachia to the quiet lanes of Newtown, know that they are cared for, and cherished, and always safe from harm.

That is our generation’s task – to make these words, these rights, these values – of Life, and Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness – real for every American. Being true to our founding documents does not require us to agree on every contour of life; it does not mean we will all define liberty in exactly the same way, or follow the same precise path to happiness. Progress does not compel us to settle centuries-long debates about the role of government for all time – but it does require us to act in our time.

For now decisions are upon us, and we cannot afford delay. We cannot mistake absolutism for principle, or substitute spectacle for politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned debate. We must act, knowing that our work will be imperfect. We must act, knowing that today’s victories will be only partial, and that it will be up to those who stand here in four years, and forty years, and four hundred years hence to advance the timeless spirit once conferred to us in a spare Philadelphia hall.

My fellow Americans, the oath I have sworn before you today, like the one recited by others who serve in this Capitol, was an oath to God and country, not party or faction – and we must faithfully execute that pledge during the duration of our service. But the words I spoke today are not so different from the oath that is taken each time a soldier signs up for duty, or an immigrant realizes her dream. My oath is not so different from the pledge we all make to the flag that waves above and that fills our hearts with pride.

They are the words of citizens, and they represent our greatest hope.

You and I, as citizens, have the power to set this country’s course.

You and I, as citizens, have the obligation to shape the debates of our time – not only with the votes we cast, but with the voices we lift in defense of our most ancient values and enduring ideals.

Let each of us now embrace, with solemn duty and awesome joy, what is our lasting birthright. With common effort and common purpose, with passion and dedication, let us answer the call of history, and carry into an uncertain future that precious light of freedom.

Thank you, God Bless you, and may He forever bless these United States of America.
